based. i almost saw it with my mom since they seemed to have expanded it to more theaters for the holidays, but then i saw they were releasing it on VOD like two days later.
People just really hate israelites and Zionists and people that used to be in Masonic lodges and secret societies like Skull & Bones. Frick I'm even one of em, but I really like Paul Giamatti as an actor and was a big fan of Sidways and was happy to see Payne and Giamatti worked together. I think a lot of writers could also learn something from this movies about how to write minority based characters in these modern times so everything doesn't feel like it's an agenda being shoved down ones throat.
>election and sideways aren't that good
absolutely filtered. and no, you probably wouldn't like this even though this is more of a straight drama than either of those.
>black lady who serves no purpose
just another character that is lost and i thought they wrapped up her story pretty well. it would have been worse if she somehow changed the teacher and kid to become better people. she basically just kept to herself
i've seen that complaint to or that she was a character with "zero flaws". she obviously had a bad drinking problem and a hard time moving on from her son. aren't those flaws but just understandable ones?
The purpose of the black woman was to show that Giamatti wasn't all bad because he defended the poor downtrodden (but secretly smart) black cook. I kept waiting for the scene where one of the privileged white students would call her a "Black person" to remind us of how evil white people were back then.
the dickhead kid did something similar though. he looked offended when Giamatti invited her to eat with them and said that the school can't fire her only because her son died
Citzen Ruth and Nebraska were my picks from him. I never apprecaited any of his shit until I was 30+. Holdover was in fact a nice character movie. It wasn't overly bombastic but kept a nice even tone.
I always forget about Nebraska even though it's one of my favorites by him. I feel like there are two Payne fans: ones that like him for the comedy, and one for the drama. It's very rare that someone will say their favorites are Election and Nebraska, for example.
There are two Paynes. One that works from an indie perspective. The other payne is the one where the stuido tells him what to do so he can make another indie movie.Suprised he didn't do Sideways 2: Merlot
it's just that I don't remember a single thing from Citizen Ruth. maybe it's due for a rewatch

it's mostly about the performance of Laura Dern. I don't even know if the movie would have been remembered much without her. it's pretty funny at times though
I was trying to figure out where I knew her from the entire movie. She was a pretty based character for basically setting up every character for success >give cookies >stops bar fight >invite to christmas party >tells kid to go hang out in basement with her niece
He handled it normally. That's what would happen to me, and I would do the same thing. I am using the internet's liberal definition of cucked rather than the real definition.
yeah, especially after he saw his dad but that makes sense. he has a very distinguished face and definitely looks a lot older than he is. bags under his eyes too
It started off a little slow but after the first hour I didn't want it to end. Great characters and world. I don't get the complaints about Mary at all.
Anons on here compared this to Sideways but it definitely felt more like The Descendants than anything. Mostly a drama with maybe one or two actually hilarious moments.
Nothing really is. but parts of the score definitely felt like it. I've watched that movie so many fricking times that even a fade in the editing reminded me of an exact scene from Sideways
Joe confirmed pleb. I knew I shouldn't have taken his opinions seriously when he said his favorite movies are like Forrest Gump, The Godfather, and Field of Dreams.
I like how Giamatti's character isn't just a cartoonishly evil butthole, he's a bit of a prick and has annoying qualities but he also sticks up for the lunch lady from the beginning of the movie and actually gives a shit about his students learning something
As most people who reviewed this said, I hope there are more movies like this being made. I don't know how this is doing box office wise though. Not a great sign that they immediately released it on VOD
I just learned that Alexander Payne was a screenwriter for Adam Sandlers "I now pronounce you Chuck and Larry". he tried unsuccessfully to get his name removed from the project
Nothing about this was comfy or Kino.
Useless characters
everyone is unlikeable and does nothing to change that.
uhh we dont know what to do
i guess half the cast go on helicopter ride even though we just took the time to introduce them xDDD
2 hours and 13 minutes for no reason
maybe its tolerable if you are at home and can run it on a second monitor/ off your phone
but actually sitting down to watch this is painful.
stop trying to say this was comfy when it wasn't
Then stop acting like an edgy teen, everyone else seems to have enjoyed it and found it ''comfy'' I don't see why some 31 year old fat loser whining about it should tell anyone else how to respond to the movie.
It was pretty gud, minus the obese black woman managing a kitchen and barking orders to older white women, and that woman’s sister with the mulatto niglet. 2 things that definitely wouldn’t have happened in the late 60s/early 70s, or was extremely rare at best.
Also, the idea of pajeet, black and Korean students back then going to some highfalutin New England high school for the elite is improbable and asinine, lol.
nobody saw this movie and it pisses me off
I'm watching it right now. One and a half hours in. Good so far.
Put down your fricking phone, zoomer
I'm a xoomer.
It's okay, I know how the 70s ended.
damn, dangerous to come into a thread during the movie
I saw it in the theater with my mom.

No chance Paul Giamatti wins best actor, but the guy crushed this movie.
is it actually good
i find alexander payne to be such a mediocre director, election and sideways aren't that good.
>election and sideways aren't that good
absolutely filtered. and no, you probably wouldn't like this even though this is more of a straight drama than either of those.
>is it actually good
7/10. Would've been better without the shoehorned-in black lady who serves no purpose
>black lady who serves no purpose
just another character that is lost and i thought they wrapped up her story pretty well. it would have been worse if she somehow changed the teacher and kid to become better people. she basically just kept to herself
Lol try watching the movie next time moron
i've seen that complaint to or that she was a character with "zero flaws". she obviously had a bad drinking problem and a hard time moving on from her son. aren't those flaws but just understandable ones?
Not an argument, I accept your concession
The purpose of the black woman was to show that Giamatti wasn't all bad because he defended the poor downtrodden (but secretly smart) black cook. I kept waiting for the scene where one of the privileged white students would call her a "Black person" to remind us of how evil white people were back then.
the dickhead kid did something similar though. he looked offended when Giamatti invited her to eat with them and said that the school can't fire her only because her son died
Nebraska is his second best after this
while Nebraska is great, that's insane. I suppose if you gravitate more towards his straight dramas than comedy though
Citzen Ruth and Nebraska were my picks from him. I never apprecaited any of his shit until I was 30+. Holdover was in fact a nice character movie. It wasn't overly bombastic but kept a nice even tone.

frick anon my favorites are Election and Nebraska, in that order, followed by Holdovers, Sideways, Descendants, Downsizing, Citizen Ruth.
well sheeeeit. that's a very crazy ranking. i haven't seen anyone enjoy downsizing over anything
it's just that I don't remember a single thing from Citizen Ruth. maybe it's due for a rewatch
it's mostly about the performance of Laura Dern. I don't even know if the movie would have been remembered much without her. it's pretty funny at times though
I want that lunch lady to cook me food and tell me that everything is gonna be alright
>christmas
>white male leads
>70's setting
Yeah, I'm thinking it's kino.
it was fine. The best scene is when he tells MC which eye is more important.
that scene almost got me tearing up. also when they said goodbye to each other. or when she was taking the baby clothes out of the box
this was a funny transition shot. I also liked it when Angus looked at the Christmas ball.
the scene with pic related was really cute and i thought she was gonna be in more of it
>That scene where she kisses the chad.
I was trying to figure out where I knew her from the entire movie. She was a pretty based character for basically setting up every character for success
>give cookies
>stops bar fight
>invite to christmas party
>tells kid to go hang out in basement with her niece
She is married to this...So basically Paul Giamatti
that guy looks so familiar. I almost thought it was the dude that directed Guardians of the Galaxy and shit
lost
POI
He was in an episode of Law and Order where he imported little boys from Africa, raped them, and murdered them.
Also Person of Interest and Lost. He's a good actor.
He's on Evil now, still doing great work.
Does she have hairy arms?
>what mcu characters are in this movie?
at one point i think the kid pulls out a comic book but i can't remember what it was. then he pulled out a nude magazine and looked at that instead
My favorite scene is when Paul's character got cucked at the party.
is it cucked when he didn't know she had a boyfriend? like what was he supposed to do at that point besides leave?
He handled it normally. That's what would happen to me, and I would do the same thing. I am using the internet's liberal definition of cucked rather than the real definition.
flirt with her more.
anyone else look up the kids age after the movie because some scenes he managed to look 35 years old
yeah, especially after he saw his dad but that makes sense. he has a very distinguished face and definitely looks a lot older than he is. bags under his eyes too
anyone else immediately clock the kid's mom from 40 Year Old Virgin?
>what are you, fricking moronic?
It started off a little slow but after the first hour I didn't want it to end. Great characters and world. I don't get the complaints about Mary at all.
Anons on here compared this to Sideways but it definitely felt more like The Descendants than anything. Mostly a drama with maybe one or two actually hilarious moments.
maybe i was just in the mood for cheese but part of me even wanted Giamatti to end up with the lunch lady...
I half expected them to do it
It's no Sideways
Nothing really is. but parts of the score definitely felt like it. I've watched that movie so many fricking times that even a fade in the editing reminded me of an exact scene from Sideways
Joe confirmed pleb. I knew I shouldn't have taken his opinions seriously when he said his favorite movies are like Forrest Gump, The Godfather, and Field of Dreams.
I thought about watching this but then I thought of Downsizing and decided against it.
I have no desire to watch Downsizing and it's the only Payne I haven't seen. This definitely feels more like The Descendants or Sideways though.
I like how Giamatti's character isn't just a cartoonishly evil butthole, he's a bit of a prick and has annoying qualities but he also sticks up for the lunch lady from the beginning of the movie and actually gives a shit about his students learning something
Why did they release a fricking Christmas movie before Halloween? What is their problem?
I wish Giamatti got more recognition in his career. I'd legit think he would have a shot but he's up against Cillian Murphy.
He didn't even fricking get nominated for Sideways either
As most people who reviewed this said, I hope there are more movies like this being made. I don't know how this is doing box office wise though. Not a great sign that they immediately released it on VOD
Watched this with my parents and my dad said “why isn’t Giamatti in more things nowadays?” Isn’t he just doing whatever he wants at this point?
I just learned that Alexander Payne was a screenwriter for Adam Sandlers "I now pronounce you Chuck and Larry". he tried unsuccessfully to get his name removed from the project
Alexander Payne pulling the same strings he always does, he'll never reach the heights of Election again
6/10 an adequate movie
Hey, that movie's pretty GOOD.
Nothing about this was comfy or Kino.
Useless characters
everyone is unlikeable and does nothing to change that.

stop trying to say this was comfy when it wasn't
You've got some growing up to do, kiddo.
31
keep projecting
Then stop acting like an edgy teen, everyone else seems to have enjoyed it and found it ''comfy'' I don't see why some 31 year old fat loser whining about it should tell anyone else how to respond to the movie.
name 1 comfy thing about it
other than snow and it takes place at a boarding school.
Can a decent copy of this hurry up and get leaked already? The only copy out there is some shitty cam with gambling ads through it.

Thank you anon. Much appreciated friend.
