I don't think I've come across a comic with incredible story but terrible art.
I have to really think about it.

      All Star Superman

Literally any Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely collaboration

      From hell
I was gonna say the dark knight saga too but I guess I have to like the story in the first place

These all have good to great art.

I thought of one: Eddie Campbell's Bacchus.
I like Eddie Campbell's art in From Hell, but a lot of the art in Bacchus isn't quite as good. Meanwhile, it's a blast to read. Also, this run has other contributors that don't always work either. I'm not a fan of ILYA in this book.

For the average consumer there's no functional difference between "bad art" and "art I don't like". Cinemaphile tends to take things further also blurring the line between the latter and "art I would fap to".

Safest bet for this topic is probably webcomics. Doc McNinja kinda comes to mind; it's a fricking blast to read but the art at most manages to transition from "terrible" to just "awkward" in the newer material.

Oh wait I gorget no one on Cinemaphile cares about hat shit you all just wanna see pretty digitally painted anime faces.
/co/'s dream comic would be one of those artgerm motherfrickers doing a bunch of pages of posed pinup paintings.

Considering how it's a character piece first and foremost I'd say character designs is the most important factor in the story. And the characters just look bad.

Yes not pretty enough. They should all look PRETTY when characters suffer loss they should make pretty crying faces, get that fricking ugly humanity out of here.

I see where the guy you replied to is coming from. Your reasons for considering the art bad come off as kind of petty. That's going to piss some people off, you should know.
To me it looks great, and Quitely is great in general, though I know not everyone will agree. I still don't think it belongs in a thread like this calling for examples of "terrible art".

I hated it at first but it grew on me a lot by the end. I think the transition from simple art to some of those big elaborate pages of Gull’s visions really sell it.

The story isn't incredible. Mostly the character writing is strong.

The epitome of this is Neil Gaiman's Sandman. 90% of it is rubbish art, like he invited his bohemian friends over and gave each of them a chapter to doodle.

      Nice art.

I assume they just tried competent but not particularly "star-quality" artists with it banking on how the weird kinda ec-comics-y styles would compliment the stories. And also kinda foolproofed the product as a whole with the avant-garde covers by McKean. who was already popular for Arkham's Asylum

Once the series blew up he started getting more crowd-pleasing artists for the stories themselves too.

McKean should have drawn the interiors.

Fix'd. None of the later Sandman artists were mainstream fixtures in the Big 2, they were just of a higher caliber.

Sam Kieth wasn't a very good match for sandman but he left after a couple of issues, I think he's a great artist though
and then you had a bunch of artists throughout the series, I wouldn't say 90% of it is bad, but it can be a little inconsistent, sure
and no, I'm fairly sure karen berger, his editor was the one assigning him his artists, specially at the beginning when he wasn't very well known

The art in The Long Halloween is good, although Sale isn't good with faces (the killer "reveal" was ruined by nobody being able to tell who it was).
It's the writing that is shitty, you can tell the "mystery" from a mile away. TLH is also just a bad comic in general, meant for the casual crowd don't understand comic style writing and prefer comics written by failed TV writers instead.

Rags Morales obliterating Morrison's Action Comics, easily. Imagine it with his usual bench of like Quitely, Burnham, Stewart, Irving etc. It would be a classic run, rather than a visual abortion.

Funny that nobody complains about Rags Morales nearly as much as they complain about Quitely, even though Quitely is a far superior artist.

Threads like these make me realize that Cinemaphile would prefer comics if they just looked like any random inoffensive manga

It's kind of true already. Look how much praise those DC manga get despite looking like ass.

    Basically everything by Frank Miller.
Even in the rare times he got to work with a good penciler & inker, his wife's shitty coloring skills ruined the product.

      >his wife's shitty coloring skills
You have no clue what you're talking about. Varley at his peak was a better colorist than the shitty capeshit colorists that color him now.
Varley's only "Crime" was DKSA, where Miller specifically wanted her to use all the photoshop effects to imitate how old golden early silver age colors were handled by non-artists laying down random colors.

The arm placement is what achieves the weird chest perspective, so it is still bad anatomy because Cap's arms are presumably off to his sides.
