It would have required immense effort on his part and it wasn't a guarantee, hence why he chose not to try. It's a defining moment in his character. A real hero has to try. He did not.

The pressure his body would put on the point of contact would be huge, but he wouldnt actually have to provide much force compared to just stopping the thing immediately and he could push with his back to increase surface area and decrease pressure. The pressure his body would put on the point of contact would be huge, but he wouldnt actually have to provide much force compared to just stopping the thing immediately and he could push with his back to increase surface area and decrease pressure. As long as its more than what gravity is applying the plane would slowdown. He could get it to a manageable speed before it hits the ground

The stress on the metal for that wouldnt exceed designed stress since it undergoes similar acceleration when taking off. The difference is that he is providing force on a small contact area of the plane. And ive explained how he can reduce that or use the strongest parts of the plane
