They should just promote the Three Caballeros cartoon for the anniversary, it shows more love for Donald's history than anything.

Funny thing is today is actually the show's 6th anniversary too, and that it's still the only television show where Donald is the main character

            >that it's still the only television show where Donald is the main character
Actually the second series in a row. The first was the Quack Pack and before anyone mentions how his nephews were the main ones, I'll just say that Donald was literally in every episode. Literally in all episodes, and that a lot of the focus was on him. Certainly The Legend of The Three Caballeros made a great Donald who is eager for adventure and I can say the last quality Disney TV series worth watching. I'm still really mad at Disney for sabotaging that series for stupid reasons.

I appreciate the effort, but this is a pale imitation of past success in the most truest sense of the word

      >godawful audio mixing
      >low quality sound effects from the archives clashing in with the new ones with absolute no adjustment
      >unfinished backgrounds
      >tons of dead space in the shots
The animation's pretty amazing I'll give them that but it's like they forgot to do everything else

This is what happens when you layoff most of your veteran hand drawn artists and have nobody to hand the torch to the newer animators.

the whole thing looks extremely low budget
like it has the same aesthetic as those looney tunes flash shorts made for their website 20 years ago

        Anonymous

Probably because it is low budget
It has like 10 people who legitimately worked on it (and most likely for very short periods outside the six hand-drawn animators), is two minutes, and is meant more more to say this character is having his 90th and to be another test project for the hand drawn department they are building up for good PR then being a full scale short
Look at how nice the pencil work is then there's no shading when coloring, it's really meant for that pencil work then everything else they didn't care and was budgeted in

          >and to be another test project for the hand drawn department they are building up for good PR then being a full scale short

i thought this at first, but apparently the guy who directed the short and was lead animator retired at the end of 2023
supposedly he was the only hand drawn veteran on the project, so if there is a hand drawn non-dtva unit who's leading it?

            Anonymous

Eric Goldberg is the other lead for the hand-drawn department, him and Mark Henn were the only two Disney retained when they gutted out the whole department in the early 2010s. They might have someone else to replace Henn but don't know who

So much negative space. House of Mouse at least had the excuse of being made for 4:3 and 16:9, why is this short so conspicuously empty?

It's way better. That short looks like it was made by people who actually cared about Donald.

      Anonymous

This is significantly better, but it's probably because it helps that the background is a sketch and they weren't trying (and failing) to mimic a Golden Age short on a one-man team.

Oh, that one's actually nice. It's got multiple different versions of Donald and the animation's doing some cool gimmicks.
DIY Duck felt kind of forgettable and half-assed as it was. But that video highlights even more just how little effort they seem to have put into DIY Duck.

        >DIY Duck felt kind of forgettable and half-assed as it was. But that video highlights even more just how little effort they seem to have put into DIY Duck.

It was mostly done digitally and they only did six animators on it. Only six animators, and they were in a hurry to make it because Disney wanted to impress Warner Bros. about their Daffy and Porky movie. Although the impression of Donald is really well done, but the background is really poor.

That's not a Donald impression, that's recycled Clarence Nash clips.

This is EXACTLY how Ducktales Donald should have acted, would have made his karma shitting actually funny instead of just sad

Because DT17 Donald is not a jerk, but a depressed family duck who takes care of his family. All of his bad personalities were given to his sister and his nephews, while he was left to take care of his nephews until they eventually left him. And he had terrible treatment in his family and it was only Daisy, Jose and Panchito plus May and June who took care of him in the end and understood him best. Really depressing, if you ask me.

It's strange how Fethry is so prominent in Italian Disney stories, where he's basically Donald's best friend, but rarely shows up in American ones. The DuckTales reboot was the first time in a while they remembered he existed.

And they only used him three times, literally. Especially considering who played him. I really don't understand until now why they didn't focus more on the relationships between Donald and his cousins, which were actually represented in the comics, but instead had to focus on the annoying boys and Webby.

Of course, Fethry was used sparingly in American comics, because he was not interesting among the American audience, and Disney comics also fell in circulation when television was primary. The Italians and Brazilians used him better to be the really clumsy and impossible cousin of Donald.

What bothers me the most is that it feels like half an episode, it abruptly ends as it starts to find its footing. He should have rebuilt the entire house.

It's an Alright short but it was missing something. the Animation is fine but the composition feels a bit off, like the camera is slightly more above looking down and zoomed out more then usual. also the color palette feels so boring. But don't looks a gift horse in the mouth as they say, I am just Glad Disney actually tried something for Donald's big day.

Did they try? Even ignoring all the visual issues that have already been pointed out, they kind of forgot to write visual gags. Donald just breaks things but doesn't do it in a funny way. Even the joke about him installing the window upside-down wasted the punchline by making it visible from the start. Did I watch a cartoon, or was this a commercial for Home Depot? I can't tell.

        Anonymous

This was my problem. It felt like someone making a “funny cartoon” for the very first time. Every “gag” was the most by the numbers shit, the slapstick was bland and underbaked, it wasn’t really doing anything new. This short sucked ass tbh

          Anonymous

I'm not sure I could even be so generous to call them by the numbers. A by the numbers way to do the plug gag would be for him to tear the installation through the wall (which is funny but has been done before), but instead there was nothing back there. Shooting himself on the face with the silicone gun would have been by the numbers if it had lead to a generic gag about him sticking himself to a wall or something. But instead, nothing actually happened. The lack of punchlines was actually kind of outstanding in a way. It's like it was written by someone who has never seen cartoon slapstick.

This is just proof of how much today's Disney does not know how to make quality content compared to the past. They should let the Italians work on Donald Duck in the future since they know how to work with the best duck. Plus, the comics about him are superior!
