Dark Universe can be saved by Werewolf

>Universal Classic Monsters have become a foundation for horror and monster movies. But Werewolf may be the key to bringing them back.
>Sadly, despite The Mummy's ambitions, the Dark Universe was put to rest almost as quickly as it was brought to life. While never officially killed, its direction changed drastically with the self-contained release of The Invisible Man. Since then, many have wondered if there was a place for the classic monsters to return and, if so, whether it would be worth connecting them once again. Werewolf has offered a strong case that the best way to reanimate the Dark Universe would be to go back to basics.
>The Universal Classic Monsters could do the same, and by relying on the classic influences that haven't been felt in nearly a century, it would help to reignite interest in its characters. Furthermore, by having their characters feel as though they're a part of another world could make eventually connecting them more plausible.

Making a Dracula Untold sequel would save the Dark Universe. Both Luke Evans and Sarah Gadon want to come back, and it needs to happen before Charles Dance is too old. The movie is a cult classic now and was in the top trending on Netflix last month.

Wolf is key character and literally created cinematic crossovers. Frankenstein vs Wolfman is the first movie of this kind. Obviously Wolfman is the only choice to bring dark universe together.

I know about Luke, and he's very vocal about this, but never heard Sarah saying the same.

Luke Evans wants to return but
this is more complicated now. Dracula Untold was Legendary production distributed by Universal. Now their deal is over and Legendary took rights. Universal can not do Dracula Untold IP so they decided to bring back old school Dracula.

It's honestly sad for Luke. He wanted to be a part of this monster universe so bad and now they ignore him.

American gothic monsters are not my favorite monsters. But I know the origina cycle from the 30s-50s very intimately. They can try but they should just avoid trying to make it into some blockbusters. So far all ideas I hear regarding this universe sound so mediocre.

      Dracula is from Romania
      The Mummy - Egypt
      Frankenstein - Austria/Germany

    How to fix Dark Universe:
    >Renfield movie introduces Cage as proper Dracula and at the end we get rather older guy playing Abraham Van Helsing and visiting Jekyll's office
    >Crowe gets standalone Hyde movie about his research on evil and how he created Prodigium - it's psychological drama
    >The Invisible Woman - Elisabeth Moss went completely insane and using stolen suit she goes on killing spree. Cop guy from previous film is the only person who can catch her but he is torn because she was his friend and now he has to stop her. She ends in asylum where Jekyll visits her.
    >Cruise return in The Scorpion King where he's searching for the cure for Set curse and unleashes Narmer - real scorpion king
There, that should be enough for good start.

Different anon but universal ceo said something like they want to work on it and don't want to rush now. Jason blum from blumhouse studio also says that universal wants to resurrect dark universe. Wolfman producers also want to resurrect it. They say that they may use some of dark universe scripts. Also recently dark universe films like the mummy or that dracula origin story became sleeper hits on streaming so if universal is clever enough they may do it in the same way how disney releases star wars content on streaming after latest movie flops.

Universal studio is very slow with blockbuster franchises. It takes them 3-4 years between each FnF film and Jurassic World.
                JW1 - 2015
                JW2 - 2018
                JW3 - 2022

So expect these darkverse films like:

                Frankenstein - 2026

They could release them every year. But probably shouldn't even if it's technically possible. Crossovers is something that the original Universal horror cycle pioneered but never mastered. It was maybe one of the two cinematic universes before Marvel but this is when those movies started running out of steam. I'm going to give Van Helsing another chance but at least aesthetically it should probably be something similar except maybe with bigger focus on atmosphere.

Take it with a grain of salt but this guy claims that new Van Helsing is supposed to be about Elisabeth Bathory. Of course can be just larp but who knows - Cinemaphile leakers saying that new mummy is a woman turned out to be true and adding Bathory to Universal monsters doesn't seem like a bad idea.

Attempted crossovers is what would kill the whole movie line, assuming it would ever come to fruition. Frankenstein's monster+werewolf? Mummy+Invisible man? They tried to GodzillaKong it already implying an agency like Monarch. It didn't take. They'd have to make a couple of actually good individual flicks first. Will not happen.

I'd just mix some stand alones and crossovers to show that the world of gothic monsters is very varied and includes many distinct settings. Different for Dracula, Gill-Man or the Mummy. I'd make the movies set in fantasy "deep time" that might be 19th century might be today. Something unreal, atmospheric, rainy. And would probably introduce Dracula and Count Orlok. It wouldn't even require super big budget.

I like what you would do with it and would watch. When you're at the helm of the franchise, I'll be right there trimming the sails. Still won't happen, no matter how hard we wish.

Dark Army is the only announced crossover. Universal announced it few years ago but they put it on hold and they want to do separate films first and then go with Dark Army.

The whole 'goal' of dark universe project now is to have separate stories for every each monster and then later to connect them into dark army. Previously they wanted more crossover bits with Jekyll showing up in other movies but bad reception of The Mummy, which was mostly criticized for dark universe attemps, made them re-adjust their strategy. However they are going to keep the same world settings so they can do crossovers later.

Announced, delayed, re-announced pending success of other properties still in planning stages and if your aunt had wheels she'd be a bicycle. When they make one good movie before rolling out their 10 year plan to make a whole terrorverse, it might be worth listening.

The big problem is that nobody gives a shit about dracula, or frankenstein, or the wolf man anymore. These things aren't scary anymore.

If they try to make it all action, it'll be soulless. If they try to make it scary nobody will be scared. They can't win on this. The things they'd need to do to make this work are beyond Hollywood at the minute. They would need actual vision, something beyond "hey them marvel films made a lot of money, we like money too!"

I think there is potential for great retelling of those stories, I just don't think anyone in Hollywood knows how to do it.

There's a niche audience for action horor films and there's very few action horrors now as Underworld series is basically over. Dark Universe was an idea to fill the niche and honestly there is really nothing like. It's either dumb cheesy superhero flicks for kids or manbabies or straight up horrors where nothing happens.

Dark Universe isn't the only project that tried to fill the gap. Remember Vin Diesel's The Last Witch Hunter? The movie was very similar in concept of action horror and was supposed to get a sequel too but nothing happens...

It's called The israeliteel of Seven Stars. It's about bringing Egyptian queen Tera to London and resurrecting her. Bram Stoker was autistic in terms of egyptology so there's a lot of background with egyptian rituals and tomb exploration and everything is down to details. Also, please read 1st editon from 1903 with original grim eding rather than happy end version from 1912. I love this novel, IMO it's much better than Dracula.

Anon, The Mummy is based on "She". Literally everything, starting with two adventurers finding her hiding place to the moment her life is sucked out. Also including her attempts to seduce and sacrifice one of them she believes to be her reincarnated lover.

                >>She, in full She: A History of Adventure, romantic novel by H. Rider Haggard, published in 1887, about two adventurers who search for a supernatural white queen, Ayesha, or “She-Who-Must-Be-Obeyed,” who is the ruler of a lost African city called Kôr. Ayesha has waited for 2,000 years for the reincarnation of her lover, whom she killed out of jealousy. She is beautiful and powerful and finds her reincarnated ideal in Leo Vincey, who is her lover’s descendant. He falls under her spell, and she attempts to make him immortal; she tries to persuade him to pass through a magic fire, but in doing so herself, she ages and crumbles into dust.

Even the poster with her eyes in the background overseeing destruction is taken straight from "She" book cover.

Dracula was great. Mummy was lame. A dark universe wont work. The film makers are too tame.

Lovecraft would never succeed. No attempt has worked. It is strictly for imagination. If you think it would work you've never read the stories yourself.

No not really. Lovecraft was a very racist man. Hollywood would frick up his works for spite. Even if they ignored that they still couldn't grasp the vibe. Can tell you've never read the stories yourself also. Youtube and wiki doesn't give you an understanding dipshit

With respect to all dark universe monsters fans, I think The Mummy suffered because of the dark universe. It would be a much better film without dark universe connections. They had cool ideas for a completely new take where the mummy isn't just a villain but is also somehow connected to main hero and then they ruined everything with universe nobody asked for.

100% this. I loved the movie but frick dark universe. Without all that crap we would get a proper mummy film with just Tom Cruise and whatshername princess. Simple separate selfcontained gothic romance story. No connections to Jekyll or Dracula and Frankenstein.

Any anons know something about the progress on Mummy fanedit cut?

I saw this Mummy movie on Netflix. Cool ending where Cruise tricked that mummified princess with the sword. If they want to bring more creatures like Werewolf then that's fine. There's potential for an interesting series. No idea why it was rated so low. It's better than half of woke crap Hollywood pushes out.

I'm more curious why they call it a flop when it made almost 410M on the budget of only 125M. Meanwhile Black Adam may not even hit 400M and that film had budget of 190M but somehow this time it's not a flop?
