Remember all these journalists saying Dark Universe is dead? Universal literally told them that it will come back and to stay tuned. And there it is. Dark Universe will never ever die simply because Universal is the only big studio with no superheroes but they can use monsters as supervillains.

god damn they have been trying to get this "Dark Universe" rolling for 10 fricking years or something

you shouldn't set out to create a film franchise, it's fricking stupid. Make one good film and make it as good as one film can be, and then if there's demand for more, then you do another. Fast and the Furious didn't start off as "the FAST universe"

10 years yes. Dracula Untold was their first attempt (not The Mummy as some people say) and that was from 2014.
There were plans to have Dracula Untold and The Mummy connected. Luke Evans from Dracula Untold meeds Jekyll from The Mummy in scrapped Van Helsing film which was a direct follow up.

10 years since they coined "Dark Universe". But actually Van Hellsing was their first attempt to make a connected franchise of their classic monsters, it's just that in 2004 "cinematic universes" didn't exist yet and they didn't want to look stupid by making a big franchise announcement if the film failed... But they 100% had plans to make a franchise. Universal themselves admitted to this later in their Classic Monsters attraction at Universal Orlando, source- I went there multiple times in the late 00s/early 10s, and the version of the show, which was about makeup and set design, had a lot of Van Hellsing presence and it was mentioned that it was hoped to be a modern franchise starter that failed.
At one point I remember reading a hope that they could bring Jackman back in a follow up to Dracula Untold.
Don't quote me on *this* part, but I believe the 2008 Wolfman was first in development as part of this Hellsing-verse but obviously, came out in a much more classic horror state.

So, yeah, basically they've been hoping to get this going for 20 years kek.

Their mistake was trying to make big budget movies with big names attached. Meanwhile Wan has a billion dollar franchise with the Warrens, a random nun and toy doll with each movie barely costing 50 mil and most of the cast being literally who? and oh yeah that dude/chick
