Stop after the Frieza saga. Everything after was just added by Toriyama's editor because the series was too popular to end so he just retconned literally everything before to continue on. The future Trunks saga was the only decent addition

Dragon Ball is a a lot and you can mostly skip it. It's a pretty different tone from DBZ. DBZ should have started after Goku aged up tho.
Start with episode 133 of Dragon Ball, stop at 148.
Then watch Dragon Ball Z Kai.

It was very clean and the colors were pristine, so there was no need to do any restoration or color correction. Unfortunately, we could only scan the final third of the movie, since the first two reels were missing. They were thrown away along with dozens of other films when Allied Vaughn's Dallas office closed around 2008 or 2009, so this reel here was salvaged from that liquidation, but sadly the others were not able to be saved.

Just watch Dragon Ball Kai. Then if you like that, you can go back and watch the original DB. Don't listen to the weird autists who say to watch the original DBZ run over Kai - Kai is the definitive way to experience DBZ if you didn't watch it in childhood. Truly one of the greatest shonen series ever produced.

Then watch GT and Super with the mindset that they're not really canon.

But the DBZ movies are an absolute must-watch. The movies are everything good about DBZ.

      DBZ if watching in Japanese

Kai if watching in English with the Texas cast

Nah, even in Japanese the pacing of the Z series is too slow at times. The Japanese version has the benefit of not being horribly translated, but why would you bother when Kai exists.

Watch Kai, any language will do.

Kai is literally just an edit of DBZ, Anon. Kai is the best way to watch DBZ if you're new to the franchise or disliked the original DBZ anime specifically for its pacing.

Dunno what it is, but Kai kinda loses something with its streamlined approach compared to DBZ (Gohan's training in the Saiyan arc has significantly less impact as it removes all the filler eps revolving around it). There's also the fact that the Japanese voice acting is far inferior in Kai compared to DBZ and Yamamoto's soundtrack simply doesn't compare to Kikuchi's soundtrack (which is utilized horribly for the replacement scoring).

Kai is really only worth it for FUNimation to finally do a proper dub for DBZ as their dub for the original was clearly a product of its time, which is probably it did far better internationally than in Japan where it's generally disliked.

            Also, this:

Is one of the weird autists I was telling you about.

Watch Dragon Ball Kai. All of it is good, none of it is horrible. You don't need to skip anything when you watch DBKai, which makes the experience easier because you don't have to remember to watch or not watch some parts.

Anyway, your choice. I'm not posting in this thread anymore.

Kai correct a lot of the issues with DBZ where characters sit around and do nothing. There is too much filler in DBZ. I do miss parts of it going into Kai. The Ginyu force is more fun, otherworld tournament is neat and like you said the training and waiting for the saiyans. There's good filler, but a lot of can become subjective. I agree with with this

you're right, but OP is exactly who Kai is for

You can't expect people to like the show as much as you. They want smaller slices and not the whole buffet and luckily, there are options.

          >Pacing
I'm currently re-watching the original sub and the pacing is fine, save for a few random filler episodes or ones that are basically an extended recap, but these are few and far between. The pacing was only a problem with people who are too impatient that there aren't 22 minutes straight of punching or they watched in the era before streaming and had to deal with trying to watch the entire series on TV.

There are a lot of long, shows shots filled with incredible animation, even in the filler episodes, that were lost on me as a kid, so I'd encourage anyone to just watch the original sub.

you're right, but OP is exactly who Kai is for

Kai was literally made for attention deficit zoomers. You will get the overall story of DBZ much faster but miss a lot of the soul.

Also. Watch the dub. Goku's voice in the sub is unbearable.

          >Goku's voice in the sub is unbearable
This is the biggest pleb filter. While DBZ is one of the very few good dubs, Goku's voice is too calm and assuring, even if his screams are amazing. Funimation tried too hard to make him a generic superhero type when he is really a half-moronic fight addicted psychotic hillbilly.

Pacing becomes hideous once Goku starts fighting Frieza and gets worse as the fight goes on. It's where the meme comes from. Before that, especially in the Namek Saga, something is always happening.

            Kai still has better pacing.

Kai was actually supposed to be a new show, but Toriyama didn't want to work on it, so they just gave you an edit of DBZ.

Watch all of Dragon Ball. From the beginning. Then watch Z only until the conclusion of the Frieza Saga.

You should avoid GT and Kai and Super.

It gets terrible when everyone can be a super saiyan. Vegeta calls it "a child's play thing". Early Android/Cell Saga was pretty cool. The entire Buu Saga was just silly.

The 22nd Tenkaichi Budokai arc is the beginning of the best stretch of the story, which goes until the Freeza arc.

      >I liked adventure more, but it seemed at the time a road manga just wasn’t what people wanted.
      >Though I was reluctant to do it, the series’ popularity did indeed start to pick up around the Tenka’ichi Budōkai… And despite my reluctance, it still felt pretty good.

And after Freeza, he was pretty much phoning it in:

      >Interviewer: How did you feel as you were drawing the final portions of the series?
      >Toriyama: The Artificial Human and Cell story arc was pretty rough… I guess you could say I did all I could with Freeza, so I was burned out, and figured I couldn’t pull off a better battle than that. I thought, “Do I really have to keep going?” Even when Cell ended, it still didn’t feel like it could end. So before the Boo story arc began, I said “Once this next thing wraps up, I want to end it no matter what.” Because I thought there was no way for any stronger guys to pop up, or for Goku to get any stronger than he already was. So my starting point for the Boo arc was, “This is the end, so I’m going to draw whatever I want!” I always liked dumb gags, so I made things comical, with the Great Saiyaman and Gotenks and whatnot. It wasn’t until immediately before the final chapter that I thought up the ending. I needed something that would signal this truly was the end, so I jumped forward ten years… But I didn’t count on the series continuing in anime form, so I bet it was really rough on everyone over at the anime company. (laughs) When the kanzenban came out several years later, I added a bit more to the ending. I thought that somehow it just didn’t click. I wanted to make it more clear that Goku’s battles were over, and that a new generation was taking over.

I like it, fun continuation after the buu saga. It does fall into some cheap tropes, but it's mostly just a "What would happen next?" and its goku and vegeta becoming even more powerful.

The animation is soulless digital trash that isn't even trying. A lot of the designs are uninspired. The story choices they've made have also been absolute trash, and honestly forever ruined some characters for me. The whole multiverse, and the power levels skyrocketing to absurd levels didn't help either. Makes Kid Buu casually destroying planets look absolutely tame in comparison. Just watch the Broli movie and be done with it is my recommendation to anyone that even wants to touch Super.

DB, DBZ and DBGT were one run in Japan.

Toriyama was done after Majin Buu.

Toei were done after GT. GT's initial writer, Aya Matsui, did write a lot of Z from the very beginning, but she drops out by the time it switches gears to the Baby Saga. The guy who ends up writing most of GT afterwards, Atsushi Maekawa only joined the anime team mid-way through the Buu arc, going on to write such beloved moments like the adventures inside Buu (where Base Goku and Vegeta fight against an Ultimate Gohan memory clone said to be as strong as the original) or the reunion party post-Buu pre-epilogue where Goku arrives late due to saving an animal.

Battle of Gods and Super exist because Toriyama thought Evolution sucked because that is in some ways an official representation of his works. Battle of Gods is the one Toriyama came back all excited to create. It literally goes to shit in the very next movie with Frieza being a gag character, no tension, the fight is full of jokes with Beerus and Whis expectating, and when the heroes frick up it gets corrected by Deus Ex Machina so yeah there were zero stakes.

      >Toriyama wanted Gods of Destruction, Angels, Ultra Instinct, and the 12 universe
      >Toei requested Toriyama bring back Freeza, Future Trunks and create his version of Broly (Toriyama designed DBZ Broly, but he didn't write the movie)
      >Toyotaro wanted Moro and Granolah
      >Toriyama wrote Super Hero and Daima

agreed on all points save the "stopping at Cell" part.
Stopping at Frieza makes for the best over arching plot
      >Goku becomes the hero he was destined to be
      >building constantly from Raditz to Nappa/Vegeta to Frieza's soldiers to Ginyu to Frieza himself with an insanely long fight
      >heroes are in faaar over their head. They don't even know what they don't know. None of this changes until the second Goku becomes Super Saiyan
      >(mostly) everyone gets their 15 minutes
      >Vegeta goes down fighting for the good guys. He's an terrible person who can only justify himself through death, which he does
      >Goku/Vegeta/Krillin and the old guard all die... making room for Gohan and Trunks to be the next generation w/ Piccolo as the mentor.
just the building of stakes is so organic. Loved it.
