I went back and looked at season 8, and boy are you correct. That was a rough first half. Fight based on height, fight based on color, capeshit, an okay fighting game match, RWBY shill fight, the only good match of the entire half in Po vs Danny, milquetoast cartoon rivalry, and the FF7 salty runback. Heracles vs Sun Wukong, as a concept alone and a single episode, makes the first half of season 9 way better.

I did a quick look, and it turns out the Persona 3 MC can technically use any weapon, and is only limited to swords in one version. So you're not even correct on that one. I went back and looked at season 8, and boy are you correct. That was a rough first half. Fight based on height, fight based on color, capeshit, an okay fighting game match, RWBY shill fight, the only good match of the entire half in Po vs Danny, milquetoast cartoon rivalry, and the FF7 salty runback. Heracles vs Sun Wukong, as a concept alone and a single episode, makes the first half of season 9 way better.
Season 8 overall felt underwhelming for what was supposed to be a legacy season
Hercules VS Sun Wukong showed they can still do interesting, soulful matchups and they just don't feel like it
