One of the biggest things to help you learn a language is actually regularly hearing people talk to each other in said language and ideally talk to them yourself. Watching a show in that language, especially one you are very familiar with, can almost simulate this and help you learn the language. So anons, if there is a language you are currently learning, try watching shows dubbed in that language. Rip to anyone trying to learn a more obscure language that doesn't have many dubs.

Probably ideal, especially for harder languages like Japanese to actually be studying the language at the same time you are watching a lot of stuff in Japanese. Although you should probably keep in mind that the VAs in anime put on very cartoony voices and that people in Japan don't usually speak like that even if the language is the same.

it's funny how amazing that seems, despite the obvious fact that.. that's how we all learned our primary language. we didn't get english lessons as babies.

I'm learning French through Duolingo but I've kept away from doing the "watch movies in the language" training idea because all the French movies I want to see have plots and conversations that are too convoluted to want to waste my first viewing trying to decipher the stuff and missing half. I never even considered the idea of watching a dubbed cartoon. Je suis le retard.

      Anonymous

Duolingo is only good for forming a basic vocabulary and grammar core for French, it sucks ass for learning the language as a whole. Once you know about 1000 core words, some of their standard constructs like il y a and (qu')est-ce que, and the basics of conjugating in different tenses you're honestly better off doing self-study.

        Anonymous

But how do I do that, except for watching dubbed cartoons? I've only stuck with Duolingo because of the app making it so easy to do a little when I'm on the toilet or before going to bed. I don't know how to study any more.

I really wish I'd taken French in school instead of Spanish. I wasn't interested in Spanish at all and didn't learn shit except el perro and como estas. I only took it because my friend chose it and because people told me it'd be great to know for going to Ibiza.

Reading helps a lot along with listening to music, since the timing makes it easier to parse words. If books intimidate you simple news articles and even just comics can help a lot for small doses. If you come across a word or phrase you're unfamiliar with, you can look it up online and it'll have a lot of tools that can give you the meaning. You can also download real lesson books if that's your thing, there are tons of resources these days.

Would the Tintin books be a decent way to start getting at it you think, or are they too filled with esoteric puns that a foreigner wouldn't get? I've been meaning to reread them since I haven't touched them since I was a kid.

              Anonymous

Tintin, Asterix, Lucky Luke etc. are all pretty straight-forward. Asterix has a lot of puns that might go over your head in French at first but a lot of them are obvious even if you just know a basic bit of vocab, or play into a recently-said sentence so it's easy to get the joke. Tintin's a lot more about the narrative so it has less of that, and Lucky Luke is kind of in the middle. Once you get to the point where you can read through a comic with relative ease, news articles and books are surprisingly easy to move up to.

I guess I'll give them a try, then. I have caught myself being able to translate tweets or similar simple message when coming across one in French, so maybe I've already learnt enough of the basic structure to move on from Duo to stories kids are meant to understand.

Depends on the puns, though. Asterix giving the not-007 character a name that's a pun on Bond? That works. But some puns that are only relevant to Frenchies, alluding to some French actor or politician? Not so bon.

That is a lie btw. I watched a lot of shows in other languages to see how the VA and jokes translate. It can help you if you already have a really solid vocabulary, specially on a conversational level, but it won't magically teach another language.

Why would someone lie on the internet?

I just don't to clear things up. OP is half right and watching cartoons in another languages can help you A LOT in learning a new language, specially a cartoon you already watched multiple times.

Only doing that and expecting results will lead to only failure and retards will start spreading misinformation about it.
