What went wrong is that the meme potential has actually decreased each season, S1 clearly had the best memes >30 seconds, in and out... >i work, i come home, i drink

I swear season 2 was originally marketed as something to do with the occult. Its been memory holed, but I vividly remember articles talking about something with their subway/transit system and having occult ties. It may have been when they first starting announcing it so nothing was confirmed, but Im like 98% positive it happened because I talked with a friend about an underground mole people plotline. I think season 1 got too close for comfort with pedo cults in hollywood, so they rushed it and Pizzaloto got forced to make a half assed gangster show but teased us all season about it being something deeper
season 3 was a step in the right direction again, with a kidnaping/conspiracy angle but it fumbled it in the last minute by teasing us throughout the season of another kidnaping cult or west memphis 3 storyline, but ended it >she was actually fine all along! she was kidnaped by rich people and escaped but cant remember anything so all that drama was for frick all!
I doubt we're ever going to get a story line season 1 again. it got too close for comfort for some people

Do you even remember S2? It doesn't shy away from the pedo cult thing at all. There's the entire arc with the corrupt mayor and his kid who's implied to be trafficking and paid to to look the other way. That entire thing is analogous to most rich political elites like the Bidens. If anything it's ballsy for being a mainstream show.
And then there's the Eyes Wide Shut sex party they infiltrate. S2 got a lot of flak just for not being S1, but it goes hard.
I rewatched it recently and it's a good watch, noir style. The issue is that it's different than the first one because nobody cares about the corruption. >everybody is more or less in on it >even the prostitutes, even though they can die from knowing too much or pulling shit against the elite, mostly are content to be drugged up and paid
There's no kid diddling or truly disgusting stuff going on. It's just that the characters are not set to live in this kind of world and that's why they get what happens to them. They're the sane ones, or the crazy ones, depending on where you stand.

So this was just last minute rewrites right? Absolute fricking nonsense, I was enjoying it up until then but that was one of the worst endings of any story i've ever seen, completely ruined any will I had to rewatch. Feels like a direct insult, a spit in my face, the director might as well have just walked right up to the camera and said "haha frick you we wasted your time eat my dick!"
No, it was pizzicato being a cranky baby about being pigeonholed with the success of s1 and pulling the ol switcheroo on fans who expected occult themes from a show that originally had occult themes. Anything after season one should have been a different show with a different name. And that show sucked.
It would have really benefited from a flashback episode detailing all this, instead of an old black dude recanting the whole tale for our protagonists.
Pizza had a good and ambitious premise of a demented detective solving the case and finding the girl, but forgetting he did. But due to how the ending was handled (no emotional punch, just total disappointment), it ends up being borderline comedic.
1-2 orphanage flashback episodes where the audience gets to bond with the girl would make the "SHE'S NOT ACTUALLY DEAD!!1" twist work better. As it is, it just makes a great season fizzle out.

Season 2 and 3 are both good television and are worth a watch but Anons compare them to Season 1 which isn't even a conversation worth having. I'll say this if you are looking for a solid 7/10 series to watch look no further if you are looking for the 10/10 unadulterated pure KINO that was Season 1 you will be disappointed.

I disagree Season 1 had a fine ending it just wasn't very satisfying, I think it comes down more to what people wanted out of this show and I think a lot of Anons expected supernatural and occult shit with everything being wrapped up in a neat little bow. Either way the conversation has been hashed out a million times in these threads to the point where morons have unironically memed themselves into believing season 2 is better and I don't feel like having it again.
Kinda reminds me of Anons complaining about supernatural elements in the Terror and how they ruined the show.

Season 1's villain reveal and overall ending was far from 10/10.

Season 2 is underrated imo, it has a really great sinister tone to it that pervades throughout the show
