the first season isn't bad but all the attempts at becoming a heartfelt show with actual emotional moments fall flat and get worse as the show goes on because the only way to make the scenes happen at all requires almost every character doing a complete 180 of their usually nihilistic attitudes and as such will inevitably feel contrived.

It's not as bad as people make it out to be.
    My main issues are:
    1. The improv can be funny but Justin Roiland isn't great at it.

    2. They'll beat every joke into the fricking ground. It's worse than Family Guy in this regard.

Justin isn't even really writing or doing anything anymore he's really just voicing shit and I can't remember the last time something was obviously improved but it usually wasn't bad, in a random zany kind of way

It pretends like it's edgy but isn't at all.
It pretends like it's novel, when everything it does has already basically been done by South Park and Family Guy (and usually done better).

Xavier is also a near endless stream of almost nonsense for 30 minutes straight. I really question the judgement of anyone who says there's a deeper, philosophical meaning to XRA.

I feel bad for you if you genuinely got filtered by Xavier, maybe watch it with subtitles on next time if you're an ESL? A majority of the jokes are not nonsense but wordplay based, you have to fully understand English to get it.

To be clear: I like XRA and I didn't say that I didn't understand the jokes. I said that XRA doesn't have deeper meaning.

It was funny for a bit but then it got too full of itself and the writers clearly didn't want to flesh out Rick's backstory but since they milked it long enough they finally had to reveal it.

  16. 2 years ago

The first season which was just silly nonsense was fun. Now its completely up its own ass and trying to up the intellectual ante with every single episode. You can't just have a funny episode where Rick gives the dog an IQ of 200 and tries in inception the principal to give Morty a good grade at math now. Now a new episode has to deconstruct the family unit and examine their intrapersonal dynamics, while simultaneously being meta and self aware of the audience watching it, and calling out the white male characters for their privilege, and while trying so fricking hard to hit all these things they have to throw in the "nothing matters dude nihilism" motif, and end on a sentimental Rick is so depressed and suicidal and he actually loves his family attempt to be like Jurassic Bark or Luck of the Fryrish. It reeks of desperation.

it's too clever and it makes people upset when they are told they don't understand it and the people who do understand get upset because someone else got to explain it and sound smart and they didn't get to explain it and seem like the smart one.

  18. 2 years ago

It was pretty funny in the first season, then Dan Harmon decided it needed to be more than a goofy comedy and started putting in shit like joke-free ten minute scenes of the characters in therapy. By the time they finally dialed back on shit like that, all the writers had been replaced by women and the jokes weren't funny anymore

Being a cynical know it all type only works if you’re actually cynical and you actually know it all. The characters are not even portrayed as as being intelligent, they are a mouth piece for the writers to pretend their worldview is correct and le big brain man is on their side.

It was good at first because it was a silly show that used science as a plot device to tell whatever wacky story it wanted to and didn’t take itself seriously at all. It got too far up it’s own ass in trying to explain everything and deconstruct the characters and just sucked the fun out of it. When it did try to go back to wacky adventures it felt too forced and reeked of “lol random” humor.

it was good for the first season or two but at some point roilland brought on a bunch of female writers to prove... something?? to his EX-wife. completely putting aside how cucked that is - women aren't funny. this isn't a subjective point of view: it can be measured and demonstrated objectively by dozens of metrics. a comedy cartoon with writers that inherently cannot be funny is doomed to fizzle and fail.

Some of the magic is lost in S2. They have problems with shock value, kill value, although they have come up with some patch solutions.

I think a base problem is that the creative force behind the show realized he didn't hate the world as much as he thought he did. He actually gave a frick, on its own way.

Any attempt at "trying to say something deep" is the most basic angsty teen thoughts imaginable.
It can't decide if it's trying to be serious or not, so that makes the characters vary wildly in their behavior.
