Marvel did kill the type of soulless bloated movie it represents but not for the reason the troony assumes. Opening weekends have always been essential to big budget movies and Furiosa had zero traction-- in fact, right after Memorial weekend it was trailing behind Garfield worldwide.

No Mad Max film was ever or ever will be a "blockbuster" they're rated R for starters which eliminates half the blockbuster audience of sub 15 year olds.
Americans never got Mad Max anyway, not in huge numbers, they prefer movies like Bad Boys with their black stars doing cape shit fo real.

You are shoehorning your preestablished culture war notions. The movie is nothing like what you guys are imagining and it really shows that this kind of lazy criticism has gotten just as bad as the shit from the lefties. Furiosa was a fantastic film and if you had any sense you would be thankful that something so good can even still be made and disappointed that its box office failure means you'll just keep getting bullshit slop forever.

Reminder to you gaslighting troons that Flopiosa is woke shit, because the only reason why she ran away from Joe's camp and then returned in disguise is because Miller's feminist handlers b***hed at him that a woman cannot be portrayed as being given away as property during the peace deal (and yhen work her way up through his ranks), she must decide to stay with Joe on her own volition. That's the only reason why this is in the movie and wastes everyone's time.

          Anonymous

She ran away from the harem where she was being molested to work her way up the ranks as a mechanic, but she didn't run away from the citadel. After working her way up and going on that first run she came back because a man explained to her that there is no better option, and the citadel was better than being abandoned. You could argue that's a metaphor for participating in capitalism, but objectively the events of the film are the opposite of girlboss individualism.

Fury Road had a clear goal to visually astound. Furiosa was bland and only visually interesting when reusing Fury Road skins. Just listen to the score (or lack thereof) and tell me they weren't up their own ass with this one.

George Miller was sleep walking through this one in return for making that weird (and superior) Genie waifu movie a few years back.

People have no money to watch a movie. 20 years ago, I'd watch random films even the shitty fantasy movies or CGI cartoons just to kill time. Ticket price was cheap back then and in my country you can watch as much as you want. Nowadays prices have increased 10x and you can only watch once.

This. Ticket prices doubled after 2008 but the inflation was manageable.

I have plenty money, I just won't spend them on girlbosses. The entertainment industry saved me literally tens of thousands dollars since 2017.

Furiosa is no different from Underworld, Ultraviolet or Elektra but people still watched them because they have the money back then. If corporations want to pander to women just make more Barbie movies or Mean Girls. At least it's cheaper than an action CGI movie.

No because those were action movies made for the male audience. Women are womanly and sexy for le male gaze. Males are males. No mdern hllywood practices.

Marvel has done damage to film but it didn't do that. Movies can't "chill in theaters for months at a time" because they won't make money that way. In two weeks Furiosa will be available on streaming. Does she think extending the cinematic run of Furiosa, when audiences are specifically choosing to avoid watching it, will somehow translate to dollars when anyone that does want to watch it at that point will be able to do so from home?
The cinema/streaming release model would need to alter significantly.

The problem with this cope is that this movie's had bad legs. It's not like The Fall Guy, which opened low but had decent legs (and is still a flop). This opened low and collapsed.

The amount of time a movie will stay in theaters today has more to do with digital movies and streaming abilities than anything else. Instead of shipping 35mm reels and taking months to transfer the footage to VHS or DVD, they can do it all digitally and just have theaters download it through secured internet sites.

Of course it doesnt help that Disney/Marvel is essentially spending a quarter billion per movie to make what is ultimately the same quality as something you'd find in the "black movie" section of tubi.

Studios get less of a cut from the boss office the further a movie is away from release day. There's a pretty tried and true formula for what long-term performance is going to look like based on the first week gross, similar to The-Numbers. Furiosa was starting to fall below those already mediocre projections. At a certain point, it just makes sense to move it to their own platform where they get most of the revenue while the movie is still in the zeitgeist at all and catch some people who were on the fence, rather than trying to have "legs" from cheap matinee showings and having everyone forget about it by the time it's on home media. People who don't get this are luddite weenies bemoaning the death of muh old ways or culture warriors who need that declared box office fluffed up as much as possible to settle internet debates. Sorry you needed it to earn $23.3m more in theaters so you could make bad faith arguments about it being profitable, but it's not in the interests of people who make movies.

It's entirely the opposite—streaming and better TVs were always going to kill theaters, and Marvel kept the industry afloat for a few extra years

  35. 4 days ago

It’s not Marvel, it’s streaming. The theater takes a bigger cut of the ticket sales after a couple weeks, so the studio has no incentive to keep a film in theaters unless it’s doing gangbusters. So if it’s underperforming, why not just just pull it and throw it on streaming or disc or digital download where you get a bigger cut? Also in the case of Furiosa it had no legs, it was beat by Garfield of all things.
