In the case of corruption, it's to see what would make the same character act differently. But because this isn't as easy to undo it's not used as often as mind control.
Instead, writers will make their corruption stories as elseworlds, alternate realities, dreams, or undo them with timetravel.
An example of corrupted heroes would be the Justice Lords from JLU, where a single change ended up radically changing the members of the JLU, despite still being the same people.
