It was actually almost never children. Therer would be shoplifting rings and we'd get notice of them coming to town via other walmarts contacting the manager.
They'd work their way North to South filling up plastic containers with stuff and either just walking out, or using the self-checkout to steal.
The kids we did catching stealing were usually just poor and want a pack of pokemon cards.
The adults were almost always stealing food or stuff like toothpaste/deoderant.
The adults stealing make-up and non-essentials were totally different people.
Oh yeah, also this was just a couple of years back, but as I was quitting the price of meat went way up and its like every 10th person was stealing meat. They'd just ring it up as apples or hide the meat in the produce bags along with fruit. My manager actually told me that if I don't catch someone stealing that day that she'd "put me under suspicion of colluding with shoplifters". She said it like she was a police woman or something. I almost laughed and of course never checked anyone and let them all leave.

on a summer day, with hundreds of bodies warming the building, and the manager cheaping out on air conditioning, it takes about 30-40 minutes of casually browsing around the store. i go when it's busy, no one even notices, and i don't fill a full cart, usually just the bottom. sometimes i place books and paper products on top of melting ice so the water soaks through and ruins the paper. i don't think it costs them as much so i don't do it anymore but i encourage others because in numbers it makes a difference.
