The UK is allegedly a "democracy", yet Brits don't have a choice but to fund the BBC. Not even joking. Brits are forced to pay for the BBC by law. If Brits refuse to give the BBC money they 100% risk going to jail.

This is the case in pretty much all Western countries. Almost every country has some sort of state-funded media which is funded through taxes, which of course everyone is legally obligated to pay.
The only difference is that in England our tax comes transparently from the TV license, whereas in other countries it just comes out of the entire tax budget. For some reason this is extremely difficult for morons to understand.
In fact, state-funded media is arguably more voluntary in England, because it's very easy to get away with not paying your TV license here.
This is cope of the most egregious nature.
In the US, we have NPR and PBS, but the only people who care about those networks are nerds. They're (mostly) irrelevant networks that each citizen pays a fraction of a cent to support.
The BBC is literally you're main network. It's a station that pumps each household in your nation with news and shows 24/7.
