Even when I was a kid I recognized she was an attempt at making the show fresh and failing.

I don't remember her. Was she nice to Catdog? Everybody else fricking hated them

Her first episode was about her treating CatDog like a science experiment and obsessively invading their privacy to observe them like they were in a zoo. She got better but she's gave me the creeps.

The only people who actually DO remember her are the two dozen diehard CatDog fans.

Outside of CatDog, Winslow, The Greasers, Rancid Rabbit, Eddie, and Mr. Sunshine, everyone was ungodly forgettable and have absolutely no value in them. (A lot of Nicktoons tend to suffer from that curse)

catdog came up on twitter recently and I had never really thought about it but apparently the Nick execs fricking loved Catdog and ordered a shitload of episodes first thing. The creator apparently got so burnt out he left the industry entirely

They banked on CatDog being the next Ren and Stimpy so that's why they ordered so many episodes right out the gate, meanwhile Spongebob was being developed at the time and they only ordered like 9 episodes because they had less faith in it

Once Spongebob got going, most of catdog's team wanted to be on Spongebob, to the point where Nickelodeon had to bribe people to do work on CatDog

        >to the point where Nickelodeon had to bribe people to do work on CatDog
incredible. They were talking about how all the staff on Catdog was extremely demoralized and how it bled into how miserable the show was.

I would love to read more about Catdog. I did not like it at all as a kid but it seems so fascinating now, especially knowing that other kids didn't like it either.

I feel bad for Peter Hannan because I think the show had legitimate promise to it, and it can be enjoyable for the odd episode that doesn't have the misery of its crew bleeding into it. those were more common much earlier on in the shows run, though. And its theme song still kicks ass.

The theme song and >shadman being the show’s legacy is what they deserve for shilling. frick the execs.

Am I weird for liking CatDog more than Angry Beavers?

I like CatDog and even then I don't think it was as good as the beavers

      Yes

Angry Beavers had the manic energy from its VAs improving with each other and plots that were stupid and absurd while Catdog felt too by the numbers as an Odd Couple knock-off despite its quality VA work.

Angry Beavers definitely isn't everyone's cup of tea. (I really can't get into it since it feels too much like a goofy clown act for young kids.) But it came along in Nick's golden age and so people have way more nostalgia around it. Catdog came along at a less dynamic time for Nick, so when it became popular to rag on the show for being mean, there wasn't as much nostalgia pushing back. But Catdog has good & funny stuff that it doesn't get credit for.

They're both fine shows honestly, just very different. Neither is really outstanding, but one is overhyped and one is overhated.

I like CatDog. It is too bad that the team wanted it to fail because they wanted to work on Spongebob. Spongebob has been pushed so much more than CatDog ever was. It has destroyed a lot of good Nickelodeon shows because after CatDog, Nick refused to let a show organically grow or promote a show unless it's an instant hit like Spongebob. Only Loud House has survived. Now Nick lives off those two shows and live action slop ala Disney Channel.

I'm pretty sure SpongeBob organically grew, because while it was really popular when it premiered, Rugrats was still the #1 rated Nick show until 2001 according to old ratings reports

SpongeBob was the #2 rated show during 1999 until 2001 and even then, they didn't decide to make merch of it until after it was proven the show was really popular

That's the point I'm making. Ever since Spongebob became their cash cow, they refuse to let any show that isn't Spongebob do that unless it's a hit.

They gave CatDog a chance because they saw the potential and the team behind it fumbled because they were upset Nick pushed the show too much. I wonder how they feel about Spongebob and how many shows were cancelled or never made because of it?

He also had an obsession with Timon & Pumbaa and would always claim that show as winning its timeslots on Toon Disney against whatever aired on Toonami

He once said that Rurouni Kenshin has no chance of beating Timon & Pumbaa on Toon Disney in the ratings, which led to that moment becoming infamous on Toonzone for a short time in 2003

She felt like a network-mandated character. It reminds me of when they told the crew of Rocko to "add an intelligent career woman, and give her a hook" and so they found a wiseass solution by introducing Dr. Hutchison and giving her a literal hook-hand.

Lola felt like the writers getting a similar memo & just making a bland safe character for it. So she was completely forgettable as a result.
