Most modern LNs are written by teenagers, SAO's author was 16 when he published SAO on the internet. It's not like before, where LNs were made by actual writers (for adventure or comedy) like Lodoss War or Slayers or Orphen all starting as LNs.
Isekai isn't inherently bad, Digimon Adventure 1 is still fun even with its limited animation, the problem is that modern isekai writers, by being teenagers or really young adult nerds, don't know much other than videogames so they always fall to that RPG template because it allows for a braindead easy way for characters to "learn" stuff. Konosuba barely gets away for it by being a comedy where everything and everyone is so awful you can tell it's just a farce, something to have fun with rather than try get "genuinely invested on" like SAO tries.
