He wanted to reutilize his old characters and hit on gold. Comedic strips (or comedic anything) haven't been done for a while and it turns out there was demand for minority characters who are allowed to act like buffoons.
I mean, it's been a long time since we've had comics that were just about stupid shit. Beavis and Butt-head level humor is honestly a breath of fresh air nowadays.
I can now enjoy this and that Beavis and Butthead revival coming out next month.

I never understood the "born that way" ideology. Your preferences are mostly based on your environment growing up and many people change their preferences if an experience has influenced them. It's like saying you used to prefer cats to dogs, but after a good experience with dogs, you now like dogs better.
It's mostly used as a response against people saying 'well, why don't you just not be gay?' As if it's easy as just flipping a switch, and not something that's heavily imprinted on you from your environment (and even then, so heavily that said sexuality exists even in countries where it's a death sentence.) It's easier to just claim that you were always like that and can't be anything else than to dig into the psychology of how one can change who they are as a person; or if they even want to change, as they most commonly would see their sexuality as not a big deal.
TL:DR, it's an easy response to an easy question.

We don't need to make assumptions like 'there's probably violence because of prior abuse,' we have a verified number that objectively states that violence is low, and evidence like that needs to be refuted by counter-evidence, not assumption.

It's a excuse for gays that say conversion therapy is ineffective and that lgbt elements in children's programming has no effect on kids. To admit homosexuality is completely Nurture means to admit that homosexuality is completely controable and need not exist.
Conversion therapy IS ineffective though. It's easier to add attractions than remove them. Removing them completely might not even be possible at all, once the connections are made in the brain.

Like most things, it's a combination of nature and nurture. Even ignoring the genetic factors, we know that conditions in the womb can increase the odds of someone growing up to be gay.
Whether nature or nurture plays a bigger role, the key part is that your preferences are almost entirely out of your control. You can't help being attracted to men as a gay guy, it's not like they just wake up one day and decide to be gay. I mean, maybe that's happened with some people in the past (forcing themselves to be gay), but it's definitely not the norm.

Based on what I've seen here on Cinemaphile, I respect the visual comedy and overall style, it has a good cartoony gross without being disgusting feel to it, however the actual writing can get awfully stale.
The characters are fine, it's nice to see a classic dumb/mean duo again, I feel like I haven't seen it in a while. They are significantly superior to any industry attempt at portraying lesbians, but they are still lesbians and I don't really care for lesbians.
