Aliens is better with the theatrical version that doesn't have the awful turret part where xenomorphs are gunned down with no effort.

        Anonymous

The turret part was awesome. It showed more of the marine tech that they kept hinting about yet didn't use in the theatrical. I don't know what you're expecting when humans use their technology againstbthe xenos, should the xenos be doing slow-motion backflip matrix moves or just be invulnerablento bullets? The xenos tooks a few losses then retreated and found another way in that bypassed the turrets, it was fricking smart of them and the humans said so

          Anonymous

I think it's stupid and goes to show how useless it is when you can cut it out entirely and the movie still works. All the other added scenes are useless too. They just make the movie longer and dumber.

            Anonymous

The turret sequence is the only time the humans win a gunfight without taking a ton of casualities. And only because the xenos don't understand what they're dealing with. They soon get the hint and find a way around. Sure, you can remove it, but without it, it just reinforces the common complaint that the xenos are never shown as smart and just shown as mindless bugs.

              Anonymous

The turret sequence literally solidifies them as mindless bugs though, them cutting the power and going through the vents without exposing themselves in the corridor for no reason makes them infinitely smarter.

                Anonymous

      Anonymous

There's only four scenes with gunfire and they all happen over halfway into the movie. I don't know what you wanted the marines to do, use harsh language? The original Alien crew wanted to use guns too but they didn't want to shoot through the hull or have the acid burn through it. The Aliens are strong, smart and deadly, the only advantage the humans have on them is weapons and technology. And the Aliens quickly find ways to get around those too.

Aliens because it's what made me go from liking to loving the films. Alien was cool and it's definitely one of the greatest sci-fi horror films to date but to say Aliens doesn't have more to do with generating the fanbase is stupid. Aliens proved that a sequel can outdo the original and it did it well before even films like T2 or Top Gun Maverick. Cinemaphile always holds Alien in higher regard and I get it but still Aliens is kino at it's finest and plays a heavy hand in the lore.

Ive only seen Alien twice. Once in 1999 and once in 2009. Ive seen Aliens like 10+ times.

Alien is a suspenseful, brooding and atmospheric horror film with incredible set pieces and world building. The problem with Alien is that once youve seen it a few times, it loses its magic. From the reveal, to the climax moments.

Aliens on the other hand lives off its characters and motivations. Ripley's entire arc is incredible. She goes from quiet and traumatized background character, to motherly badass driven by pure instinct to save Newt. Its probably one of my favorite themes of any film ever. The moment she realizes she has to go to the deepest lair of the xenos to save Newt and does so without hesitation is exhilarating. The other characters are so much fun to watch aswell. I also love that they added a human villain.

All in all Aliens > Alien.

I hate the Cinemaphile meme of "you can only like one or the other and we must argue which one is best!". I like both and they form a decent story. I do prefer aliens to rewatch but I'll rewatch alien too. And I'm playing through Alien Isolation again since it's such a great homage to the movies and definitely feels like a canonical story of Ripley's daughter looking for her and encountering the xenomorph as well.

Alien by a long shot, Aliens is quite silly, if you watch the making-of it gets even worse when you realize what a simpleton James Cameron is, Ron Cobb and Syd Mead saved his arsch, he didn't even get Giger to work on the movie. The English crew hated his Canadian ass.

Aliens is the superior film all round. Calling it an action flick is a moronic opinion. There is around 3 mins of action where 90% of the cast is killed, preceded by 1 hour of suspense and build up and followed with an intense and sickening escape sequence.

I rewatched Alien and I realize how central it is as a deeper point. It's what separates "man" from the "beast", right? After all, a beast doesn't care for such a creature, and would only seek to eat it.

...Except it literally leaves Jonesy alive, knowing that Ripley wants to save it, so it can follow Ripley to wherever she's going.

The alien is smarter than directly stated, and it's underestimated at basically every single turn. The things we believe are unique to humans as a species aren't all that special.

Alien because it has mysterious cosmic horror. In Alien, the creature is outnumbered by humans. In Aliens, the creatures greatly outnumber the humans and it becomes all too clear that they are no match for humans. It's like 19th century European soldiers fighting against primitive tribes. The only reason the creatures in Aliens even had a chance is because the company set only like 10 soldiers to the colony. Given equal numbers, the aliens would probably be easily wiped out. This just lessens their intimidation factor.

      Anonymous

The Alien in 1 was only scary because they had no weapons (and even if they did they would be loathe to kill it due to acid burning through the hull). In 2 the aliens had the tactical advantage of surprise and a disarmed squad that was wiped out quickly. In reality the Aleins are not supreme killing machines or apex predators, human tech would dominate them quickly just like it has every non tech species.

        Anonymous

Agreed. But also, the xenos in aliens constantly show that they can adapt and overcome the human tech. That's why it's so important to Ripley to wipe them out and not let them get back to Earth. The xenos will eventually get free and then there's no stopping them, the Earth will be wiped out. I think that's a pretty scary undertone to Aliens. And respectful to the xeno not just treating them like mindless bugs.

          Anonymous

          >the Earth will be wiped out
nah there would be an initial outbreak and confusion with a lot of deaths but all the humans would have to do is lockdown an area, quarantine and destory with mass firepower or nuke. Aliens can only reproduce with a host so they would eventually lose a war of attrition.

Hard to imagine ripley or bishop not running a full bio scan on the Sulaco using military grade sensors to detect any other xenos or eggs before going into cryo. They knew the queen laid eggs and she had plenty of time to pop one out in the dropship.

      Anonymous

She literally did not. The drop ship arrives. Bishop and Ripley stand in the hangar bay talking to each other and breathing a sigh of relief. Then the Queen pops out of the dropship's landing gear and kills Bishop. She then immediately attacks Ripley. Ripley goes and starts up the power loader to fight her. The Queen continues to bang on the door and never lets up to vanish into another part of the ship.

        Anonymous

The queen was in the landing gear for over 30 mins - that's how long bishop says it would take for the dropship to arrive at the sulaco (from earlier comments in the film he also said things like a hour to prep etc). 30 mins seem enough for the queens to pump an egg out judging by what she was doing in the nest.

          Anonymous

She'd then have to run into the crew's cryo-sleeping quarters and deposit it, while being too large height and width wise to fit, and not knowing where they were or that they were a thing, nor having enough time to get there while fighting Ripley

what are you talking about. The egg would hatch and the facehugger would find the cryotubes and implant - watch the first 3 mins of alien 3 to see what happened, it literally shows and opened egg in some location then a facehugger climbing over a cryotube

and the question is why would they not have scanned for any eggs after killing the queen when they knew she laid eggs and was intelligent and was on the dropship for 30 mins.

Yea, it was in the cryopod chamber. It's moronic regardless, Ripley and Bishop would have seen it or detected it

how did it get in the cryopod chamber?

used acid to break in - first few mins of alien 3 shows some acid being sprayed aroudn the place and alarms going off

The acid sprays *after* the eggs hatch in the cryopod chamber, so how did the eggs get there in the first place?

it's not clear from that pic or the movie that the egg is inside the cryo chamber - would have made some sense if they had it in the dropship landing gear,

the egg is on the left side beside the sulaco sign on a door. That looks like a corridor behind it not a room.

was wondering why Cinemaphile is always saying that Aliens is far superior to The Thing, so I start watching Aliens for the 33rd time and then, she shows up, suddenly everything made sense.
    never change Cinemaphile...never change.

first time i saw it was the first ever broadcast on uk tv. It was a sunday night - think it was around 1990 and I was 10. My parents let me stay up and watch it with them for some reason. I was shell shocked for 2 weeks afterwards and couldn't sleep. I had a black bike helmet on top of a wardrobe in my bedroom and when the moon shown on it it looked exactly like an alien head.

you needed the full colour license unless you had a black and white tv.

Aliens is so good, reminds me of Halo 1, when they meet the flood.
I think The Flood sequence in Halo was inspired by the movie

It is 100% the inspiration. One of the marines freaking out is a direct reference.

Why have none of the later films returned to the aesthetic of the first three Alien films?

I was surprised the AvP movies weren't set in the future either.

Aliens because seeing that in theatres first time run as a kid in a crowded theatre was awesome. Alien is a good movie but I have better memories of aliens

Alien by far. It is still visually impressive, more so than most movies today. It is perfectly paced and the atmosphere on the Nostromo and on LV-426 is incredible. Aliens is alright but it definitely feels like an 80s action movie. Lots of awful cringe James Cameron dialogue too, where every character is a wise cracking military meathead
The original just transcends its time and is basically flawless

In Ridley Scott's classic Alien (1979), the spacecraft is named the Nostromo after conrad's book of the same name; the escape vessel is named Narcissus, an allusion to another of Conrad's works, 'The Black person of the Narcissus'. In James Cameron's sequel Aliens (1986), the Marine transport vessel is named Sulaco, the town in which Nostromo is set.

both are great and enjoyable, different approaches to the monster and the horror, one is more horror centered and the other action centered, it´s like comparing a blowjob with cuddle with your loved one, you are a fricking idiot pal.

Alien is a masterpiece of psychological horror
Aliens is fun as an ACTION-PACKED movie
Alien 3 is a mess, it can be fun to watch and iconic for a few things but really bad in general
Alien Resurrection is a piece of dogshit that makes absolutely no sense. It's interesting in a way but garbage in concept and execution.

Prometheus is good no matter what Cinemaphile says
Alien: Covenant is a mess, I lack words to describe my disappointment.
