despite what you hear, education in asia isnt very good
they only focus on passing tests, not actually learning things
and in japan even if you fail the tests they'll pass you anyway because it looks bad for the school if they have students failing classes
english education is especially bad, it's either taught by japanese people who cant speak english or americans who cant speak japanese and dont have any teaching training
people there also dont see much use with learning english so they dont bother
Japanese, I'm lead to believe (I tried to learn Korean which is supposedly similar), is near the polar opposite of English. Incredibly different and therefore difficult.

- Island nation mentality and strong internal media ecosystem. All the nations that DGAF about English are like this. China, France.
- limited sounds. English has something like 42-46 unique sounds (despite there only being 26 letters). Japanese has 20-29, according to wiki. Therefore the Japanese have to learn a bunch of sounds that have no native equivalent for them, which is one of the most obnoxious and difficult parts of learning a language. And asians tend to be shame based perfectionists, so giving up....
To this day I still can't tell the difference between 'ch' and 'sh'.
