>Because it dared to unironically satirize a totalitarian state
They're not totalitarian, they have a hybrid democratic fascist system which is more interesting. The systems of control are more subtle. Like to gain any rights or status in society you need to serve in the military. They are not technically forcing you. But by serving you get 2 years of militarism drilled into you. The education and media are entirely controlled by the state enforcing state ideology.
But they also have elections, and they seem to course correct when they seriously screw up. More realistic response would be "double down until society collapses".
They're much more akin to modern Day Russia. The film gets the over confident militeristic state plunging into a war gleefully unprepared only to take massive casualties right away.
>How so lmao russian is ruled by corrupt oligachs.
The militerism, state media, and endless propaganda from youth to support war and conquest. Then blundering into a war that has insane casualties in the first wave because you under-estimated the opponent, then pulling back and attempting a slower smarter approach.
If anything, ST is naive into thinking their system would just end up in a corrupt oligarchy with a dictator for life. The Federation does appear to be a genuine democracy, and thsoe who screw up are forced to resign.
>The Federation does appear to be a genuine democracy, and thsoe who screw up are forced to resign.
so it's nothing like Russia there's no current government with honest people. Someone like Sky Marshal Dienes does not exist in any society today.
Hah, in Russia serving in army considered to be as a thing for poor people and idiots. Army has no political power here. Putin is ready to pay a lot of money for new conscripts but there are almost none of them.
>Because it dared to unironically satirize a totalitarian state
between this and Judge Dredd, brits sure do know how to make a fascist dystopia look appealing
It makes you root for our designated heroes, our team, our shirt, our race.
Then it proposes that the enemy is a bunch of insects, less than human, sub-human if you will that are incapable of rational thought, yet they manage to somehow lunch an asteroid across the galaxy so accurately that it completely destroys a city, on land on a planet 75% water.
Some of the film is presented to the viewer as through the lense of in-universe media although we get glimpses of "reality" here and there but this leaves us a bit biased, we are spoon fed most of the info so we don't ask questions, pretty much as our characters that just act and obey orders because that is the right thing to do.
We learn at the end of the movie that the insects are actually "afraid" of the technological might and bravery of our human characters.
In conclusion I think it is a piece of work that puts you in the shoes of a totalitarian fascist (in the original sense of the word: militaristic, with a set of costumes, social hierarchy based on service, putting first the nation than the individual) member, being fed propaganda so you support the regime. Of course, this point is so in your nose, because really, who wouldn't root for humans and Earth? But that is necessary to make you the viewer understand how would a normal citizen from one of the major warring nations in WW2 felt watching these sort of films everyday and so we understand how powerful media can be in shaping our world around us, not to mention the dehumanizing aspect of propaganda, that not just the evil nazis did with slavs and israelites and gypsies, but americans too, portraying the japanese, or "japs" as subhuman animals and how folks back in the continent had no problem with this.
So yeah, a "Gotcha!" Type of film that kind of mocks the viewer for slurping all the propaganda and not asking questions.
The framing device is someone on a tablet watching Fed official media, intersected with the main story. The most fascinating part of the film is when the main characters appear in one such segment, then it transitions out of it. Originally the propaganda segments were distant from the main cast, but now they're intertwined in it.
That's because Argentina is shit and all they do is cry about islands that don't want them. Imagine being beaten by people that eat black pudding for breakfast.
Yes this and robocop is someone watching on a 1980s style tv that's why there are ads and the news!
You're an idiot and tablet computers did not exist in the 90s.
>You're an idiot and tablet computers did not exist in the 90s.
space alien warfare and futuristic cyberfootball didn't exist either. what is your point
Listen, zoomer. Tablet computers WERE NOT A THING so your theoretical framing device is completely moronic. Was robocop a TV show? no? Sorry to btfo you like this.
are you in the spectrum dude? Taking things so literal is certainly one symptom. As I read anon

when the word "Tablet" my mind went to a device similar to a tablet but also to the concept of portable device where propaganda can be shown intimately 24/7 to citizens.
And the movie does have tablet devices, although very archaic by today standard.

How many layers of headcanon are you operating on kek

what head canon? Saying "tablet" it's like a variable in algebra, he was referring to something ubiquitous where the government can brainwash you freely on the comfort of your home.
Bugs with FTL drives that shoot nukes out of their asses are perfectly capable of redirecting an asteroid field to hit Buenos Aires and you're a homosexual if you think otherwise.
Either they didn't/couldn't fit an FTL drive to the asteroid and it would take centuries at least to arrive or they COULD and simply chose not to ram that thing at light speed into Earth.
It makes you root for our designated heroes, our team, our shirt, our race.

Outright shows. The emeny is literally bugs. Brainsucking, man-killing bugs.
If you had any actual thought you would've pointed out that the targets they shoot in boot are human which implies the Federation has had trouble with breakaways (this also explains the Mormon colony). Much like he backstory for Halo.
>Outright shows. The emeny is literally bugs. Brainsucking, man-killing bugs.
Good citizen. Now go get your federation issued rifle and uniform and present to the nearest barrack. >that the targets they shoot in boot are human which implies the Federation has had trouble with breakaways (this also explains the Mormon colony).
I had forgotten about this.
Bro, are you fricktarded?
Are you trying to headcanon another story encapsulating the starship troopers movie in which the enemy they fight isn't bugs? They literally rip people apart and suck their brains.
[...]
They are certainly brutal, and alien, but at the same time I didn't hate the bugs. The Fed have only one solution to anything: violence which leads them to be a very dumb society that lacks curiosity. The bugs are certainly more sophisticated than they think, and at least attempting diplomacy might have had some effect.
In all likelihood, the bugs would have just said "stay out of our zone and we're cool".
>The Fed have only one solution to anything: violence
Proof of this? The lecture doesn't count as it doesn't imply that is their only solution, only that they recognise it as truth.
What is up with dummies trying to make fricking starship troopers into something it's not? Firstly, read the book instead of inventing headcanon. Secondly, read Armor if you want your le violence society so badly.

I've seen 2, and it was pretty bad but I still intend to rewatch it at some point to convince myself it wasn't a fever dream. From what I remember it had some gay body snatcher plot where the bugs had come up with a new bug that could take over a human body and blend in with humans.
Idk about 3

2 is a dumpster fire, 3 is pretty bad but has the battle suits in it so it ends up being ok
>A murderer was captured this morning, and tried today. Execution at 6 on all channels.
This might actually be the worst thing shown in the movie, as it shows civil rights are pretty weak. No way you can get a fair trial or defend yourself in a day.
>guy gets captured on camera killing someone >nah you can't know for sure let's give him a while to put together a defense maybe it was his twin brother
They use (most) of it to buy weapons from US arms companies at profit. So it's a transfer from tax-payers to companies and then it will trickle down (lel) into jobs and work for the plebs. Eventually.
Remember that time that they impeached Trump for asking Zelensky to look into the Biden's corruption in Ukraine, and then Biden took office, and we started giving ungodly billions to Ukraine? That was awesome.

I thought everyone in Russia was poor.
Not people in moscov or st. petersburg. Most of russian war casualties come from poor eastern regions

Reminder that this is one of the only Hollywood films set in Argentina, and featuring Argentinian characters.
They did have a few Germans settle there right?

Because verhoeven was an actual psychopath. It's why a lot of his movies were on another level
I didn't realize that the screenwriter had a cameo as the guy who was sentenced to execution for sedition.
I also didn't realize that the same dude also wrote Starship Troopers 2 and 3.
