It's one of two episodes in the season that actually just play it straight (the other being Boom) without trying to reinvent the wheel or do some daft experimental shit. Neither Devil's Chord nor 73 Yards stick the landing so it's a waste of effort. Boom would be better than Space Babies if not for the Moffat quirky rambling dialogue which I'm so tired of by this point. So Space Babies wins by default despite the major moronation of that episode.

"The one who waits" manages to get through to the Doctor the second time so he doesn't step in the fairy circle.

Ruby gets her life back, but at the same time it means that she didn't stop Roger Ap Gwilliam, so he's still out there me-tooing and nuking away to his hearts content. Something happens that royalty fricks Britain and possibly the world in the final episode of this series. Given that combat chair crip is no longer the unit science officer and Segway dwarf is this implies it happens in "the future" so RAG is PM then.

They could have made it a short scene. She could have used the poles at a pier to measure it, and there could be a few quick cuts maybe. She could even just say "71..72...hmm..okay" and then it coould move on.

What is added to the episode by showing her do that? The point of her saying she calculated the distance several times is to show that she's been obsessing over the woman and trying to figure out everything she can. That's the relevant information that doesn't change and isn't enhanced by showing her doing it. You may as well complain that there weren't scenes of her sleeping or going to the bathroom to prove that she didn't stay awake and hold in her piss for 65 years straight.

she went to a local MacDonald's looked at the women. Then walked out of Mcds in a straight line until the old woman was in the Mcds. Thus she knew the distance between her and the old woman and then just measured the distance from the spot she was standing in until MCds.

In the original timeline, the woman only appeared after the circle was broken. The new timeline is created by the woman taking old Ruby back in non-physical form. That's why old Ruby looks different to the woman.

They're played by different actresses, and the most obvious visual difference aside from the clothes is the hair. If you go back to the hospital scene old Ruby and the woman are in the same scene, so you can see some of the differences more clear.

Are you trying to say Ruby and the old woman are not the same person/entity? Because that's a pretty hard argue based on the hospital montage of Ruby lying in bed with the outstretched arms in first person, the events of the episode playing in reverse, and the cut to the first person FOV of the old woman right afterwards. They even wear the ring on the same finger. I think you can argue Ruby *becomes* the old woman but was not always her. Anyway this lame episode doesn't have any internal logic or answers so I shouldn't be wasting breath discussing it anyway

              >Are you trying to say Ruby and the old woman are not the same person/entity?
Not until the very end at most, I feel. And even then the waters get a bit muddied. For example, we know that the memories of Ruby in the other timeline are in the young Ruby at the end of the episode, just buried. If Ruby is the old woman who just time travelled back in time, then she wouldn't have the memories. Also, the old woman only appeared after the circle was broken in the original timeline whereas she appears before it gets broken at the end of the episode. If it was a loop then old Ruby would be appearing at the same time as she did in the first timeline. I would put forward that Old Ruby hitched a ride to the past through the woman, which would explain the visual differences (hair, clothes, etc)l

                Anonymous

Yeah but the first person FOV straight up implies that she becomes or anyway embodies/possesses the old woman. I mean it's undeniable, she's not just there in spirit, she literally becomes the old woman. If the first person FOV shots didn't confirm it, the ring being on the same finger 100% does. So even if she hitches a ride back into the past she does so by becoming the old woman...except arriving at a point in time even earlier than the old woman manifested at the start of the episode. Frankly none of it makes any sense of is logical or structurally sound, it's one of those situations where enjoyers of the episode will just throw their hands up and say "it's all open to interpretation" or "it's symbolic" or something as a dodge for the bad writing. But even then RTD is wrapping himself up in knots because at multiple points throughout the episode the entity is confirmed to be a real palpable thing that others can see rather than some abstract symbolism so none of it makes sense, it's bullshit writing dressed up as 2smart4u.

that makes no narrative sense. Why did the old ruby hound young ruby in the original timeline, why was she using signs instead of speaking, what did she say to all the people that came to hate young ruby? Why is the end of the loop at an arbitrary point in her old age and why is she dressed in black when she was dressed different in the hospital bed?

that hasn't been true for like 40 years. during the Pertwee era the show made more of an effort to appeal to adults as well. the revival was even going for that tween Buffy type audience, Rusty wants to try to catch lightning in a bottle twice but he's too out of touch and doesn't even understand the shit he's virtue signaling for. so you wind up with a show that's made for no one except for Russel and his smug woke buddies that burn through a few million of Disney and Sony cash.

RTD's lack of confidence in Shooty is painfully obvious at this point. He's clearly useless for anything except swanning about, shouting, and spouting paragraphs of exposition. Four stories into his run, they've tried to tone him down by forcing him to stand and emote in place; he's completely left out of the fifth, except to emerge from the TARDIS and scream "We're in WAAAAALLLEES!" Once he disappeared, I found myself enjoying it.
Ruby has become the main character, which is fine. She's actually quite good; as someone else pointed out earlier, she's already more interesting than Clara.

Because the episode is cobbled together from 15 minutes of a script he wrote a few years ago, and a handful of unused ideas from years and years, filmed during a time when Ncuti just couldn't be bothered filming or wanted to take a holiday.

In any case, it's more a case of Ncuti not being available for shooting at the start of the season filming because of Sex Education so they created an episode they could film with Ruby doing pretty much everything and Ncuti being able to film his parts later.

I am from Wales, and I'd be happy if English people never came here at all, to be honest. RTD has hated the Welsh because he's a big fat useless homosexual who isn't tolerated in Cardiff and can't go home to Swansea because everyone knows about him and his mum.

"RTD always says that", "I don't believe anything RTD says anymore". It's telling that the episode everyone's hyped for is christmas because Moffat rather than Davies wrote it.

Journey's End is basically everyone's favourite characters getting together to defeat disabled space Hitler and his nazis, then there is that gay scene where they are all in the TARDIS celebrating and hugging each other while towing Earth across space which should kill everyone on it but it didn't.

I think the companion team up would be a lot cooler if we hadn't seen most of them team up before this (Martha and Donna in the Sontaran two parter, Rose and Donna in Turn Left, Rose and Jack in s1, Martha and Jack in series 3, Rose and Sarah Jane in School Reunion). Ironically the one interaction we hadn't seen and that would have been the most interesting to watch is Martha finally meeting the mysterious Rose the Doctor kept telling her about. I don't think they interact 1 on 1 in the episode at all.

The same thing killed the Avengers movies for me too. The big appeal (seeing the superheroes from their various different movie series team up together) of it all was lost when they all started turning up in each other's solo stuff all the time.

My headcanon to make the episode make sense that was definitely NOT intended by RTD is that the old woman is some construct of the TARDIS trying to correct the situation. After the Doctor steps on the fairy circle and fricks the timeline because of supernatural buggery the TARDIS creates or manifests the old woman which essentially serves the purpose of allowing Ruby to stop the world from getting nuked. They also talk about both the TARDIS and the old woman having a perception filter. Then at the end of the episode when Ruby is going to die the TARDIS time travels her back to before any of the events even happened to prevent the situation from occurring

Nah, klanon. It's just the show has run its course and needs to go away for several years. Same thing happened to Star Trek in the 2000s not that it ever recovered.
At least the 80s Who could point to a belated rejuvenation in its last seasons. Here, RTD is plainly out of gas, and the BBC seems fixated on recreating the Tennant era, like how the old show fixated on recreating Tom Baker.

They say all that in like ten seconds? Besides, some fat dolt like her mother isn't going to understand what that means. Either way, why would they believe her?

They hate Ruby because seeing the old lady makes them realise the massive paradox of two Rubys existing at once, and because it's so wrong it triggers a kind of hatred because everything is screaming inside of them that things are wrong.

Fugitive Doctor actually felt like she could be related even if canonically the chronologically was fricked, the actor portraying her had presence but was lacking a bit in the charisma department

    >FRICK YOU RUBY YOU'RE NOT MY DAUGHTER GTFO
    >I HATE CHILDREN, I ONLY ADOPT THEM BECAUSE OF THE MONEY
I swear between the Christmas special which introduced her and now this episode, over half of Ruby's mum's screentime thus far has been her acting "out of character". I'm expecting the One Who Waits to "compel" her to push gran down the stairs next.

I feel like this episode is gonna make more sense retroactively once we actually find out what the frick is up with Ruby.
As it stands its basically just more setup for "fantasy and the supernatural coming to life" like Kate mentioned

So, like, the Doctor and his Companion land in this weird place and there's this big race going on between all these aliens, and they explain that the one person who arrives at the destination first lives, and everyone else dies, so they decide they should run to the destination too but then they get to the destination an realise they've arrived second because the winning alien already entered the destination but wait now they're merging and it's only then the Doctor realises the truth the whole time they were inside a giant woman and the aliens were sperm.

I wrote a story almost identical to this once, but the race was an eden planet, and every 15 years the planet shifted to become a masive hellish environmental deathscape, with a chamber in a massive trench at the centre. Only one person could get there, and it turned out that the planet's ancient terraforming device was et up to need a human to bond with it and guide it every generation.

i grew up with doctor who reruns and i recently tried watching the show again for the first time since like 2005. found a new episode on disney+ and the show felt like it was exclusively aimed at late teens / early 20s women. i felt like the old ones had a little something in it for everyone while mainly appealing to fans of scifi, but the new one looked like it was straight outta tumblr

73 YARDS: RTDS UNDERAPPRECIATED AND MISUNDERSTOOD MASTERPIECE

  72. 3 weeks ago
    Anonymous

I take it I was the only person who noticed that 73 yards would have been 66.6m if they hadn't had to ruin it when Disney said.

    >"America doesn't know what a cm is, change it to yards or we are pulling your funding!"

By this point the episode had already been filmed, because the only points where it says 73 yards Ruby's mouth is out of shot. (SFX and graphics like the phone would have been added later on).

66.6 metres is a much cooler name for the episode and would have evoked even more of a horror vibe, but Americans had to miss the point and replace it with something that means nothing. No sense of class or style.

      Anonymous

I think 73 yards is better actually. 666 would be kind of eyerolling because of how on the nose it is.

      Anonymous

Why would you want to evoke a horror vibe in this episode? It's not a horror story past the first 12 minutes. It's about an evil conservative who can't get his hands on the nuclear codes.
