Point was to give Millie a Doctor Lite episode cause Nctuni was busy with sex education.
The problem is, instead of doing what would be a traditional Doctor Lite episode, involving there being a mystery, the Doctor is missing, we need the Doctor back to solve the mystery, ala your Blinks etc.
We got the Doctor presumably talked to the lady off screen. Ran away off screen. Stayed out the plot until either the ghost lady finally caught up to Ruby, (I won't be surprised if it's later to revealed to be her mother.), Old Ruby ends up going back through the timeline, young Ruby is convinced to not kick off the plot. The UK proceeds to leave Nato in 2046 and fires nukes cause Ruby couldn't use the Ghost Lady to stop it with this changed timeline

        >The UK proceeds to leave Nato in 2046 and fires nukes cause Ruby couldn't use the Ghost Lady to stop it with this changed timeline

Exactly how I feel about it. And rewatching it it’s still enjoyable but the follow up being this bad does sour it immensely. The fact there’s another RTD series locked and loaded ready to go after this one does not bode well for the future of this show. As hot as Varada Sethu is I doubt she alone could save it. Besides, we have no idea what her dynamic with The Doctor will be.

tbf the slugs were already known about beforehand but the ending still sounds moronic enough to be real

Just seen it and it's worse than Boom imo. RTD's hyped it up as his best episode ever, and it's a boring mess beyond the first 10 minutes. Leaving aside the fact that the premise doesn't work (they never show the woman walking when Ruby moves; the train scene pushes the concept beyond the limit of credibility), the political stuff was rushed (why did he want to nuke the world?) and the ending was something most will have guessed in the first 5 minutes (and he didn't even explain any of it), Doesn't look good for the rest of the series.

When exactly did UNIT change from United Nations Intelligence Taskforce to UNified Intelligence Taskforce?

I know that the actual UN were pretty grumpy about it for a while, but did the BBC change it years ago and I've only just noticed it? They could have done a "Mavity" thing to explain the name change too, rather than just thinking nobody would ever notice.

They changed it in 2005 because the UN threatened a lawsuit when the BBC did a tie-in website calling it the United Nations IT.

the BBC created a fake UNIT website for S1 and the UN send them a cease and desist letter claiming that it was forgery. the BBC then decided to rename UNIT instead of just closing the website presumably because the same problem would have also applied to merch.

No. Your reaction is accurate. I walked away baffled and didn't realise how little the explanation made sense until I read the thread. Literally the only mystery that the ending explains is the identity of the woman. Every other mystery is left unanswered. List her powers in your head and you'll catch on:

It didn't get spoon-fed to you, but is not difficult to work out

        >Why do people flee?

Because they were afraid of Ruby's/ the one who waits' powers which are not gone into detail here, but as "the one who waits" and someone even the Toymaker fears it's implied that she has some powerful supernatural attributes.

        >Why does she maintain and exact distance?

Think about what that distance is in meters and how that might relate to the mythology and folklore of well know world religions. It's 10cm off 666cm but that's probably due to exactly where in the body you take your measurements from and the fact it has to be expressed in yards for the American audience.

        >How does she always keep up?

She's the one who waits. Supernatural powers and all that jazz, but you're probably not meant to think that deeply about it.

        >Why did The Doctor disappear?

Same reason everyone else did. At the end you saw the one who waits using her powers to make the Doctor NOT step in the circle, rather than run off into the TARDIS and lock the door. So part of her powers is being able to convince people to do things by just saying it and without them knowing. That's why the Toymaker would not challenge her because in her awakened state like that to win any game she would just have to say "lose" to her opponent and they would lose without knowing why or even that she had spoken. Impossible to win so a game is no fun.

        >Why did she outlive Ruby?

        She didn't, she is Ruby.

        >Literally the only mystery that the ending explains is the identity of the woman.
Not even. Old Ruby doesn't have the same hair or clothes as the creepy woman. Old Ruby's presence is what allowed her to say "don't step" and break the loop.

I have to assume this is going to come back up. It's the only way to make anything that happened in that episode make sense. Rape implication was done terribly, Doctor Who has implied physical/Sexual abuse a lot more tactfully in older episodes. In Empty Child we learn that one of Nacy's children has been molested without any explicit dialogue.

But like everything in the second half of the episode, it's so rushed you can easily miss it.

Based on RTD's comments I think what the pub goers said was probably true even though they didn't believe it and used the legend to screw with Ruby. I got the sense in the episode Roger ap Gwilliam might have a split personality or he's the vessel for this bloody spirit Mad Jack which is why him getting the nuclear codes was so dangerous. The mysterious woman was a herald/warning from the Earth like they said. But I'm not sure if it was supposed to be old Ruby or if it's a spirit guided by the will of the dead. So it was a war between good and evil spirits, the war between the land and the sea. The mysterious woman vs Mad Jack.

I think it's something in that area. Definite Turn Left vibes too so there might've been some parallel pocket universe stuff at play which is why the Doctor went missing when the seal was broken. Ruby was trapped in some pocket timeline with this battle between two entities.

I think when he wrote the Library two parter he had no idea if he'd ever have a chance to revisit the character, so didn't give it any though.

Them he became showrunner, panicked, and decided to speedrun her entire story in a few years before the actress aged too much. Given a chance to do thinks over, I expect he'd make her an alien covered in enough prosthetics to be able to be played by anyone.

WHY DID PEOPLE RUN FROM FUTURE RUBY?

    A) something in how she is perceived scared them. It’s some attribute or characteristic of her

    B) they could tell it was Ruby. Obviously the woman was a different actress but storytelling rules demand that we pretend she looks a lot like Ruby. Maybe seeing an older version of someone freaked them out.. still if it was me I’d just figure it was her grandmother or something

    C) somehow looking at her made them see their own future selves and this freaked them out

However people often looked at Ruby with what I would describe as contempt, or disgust or even hatred. Maybe they perceived on a subconscious level that they were looking at future Ruby and seeing a paradox sort of freaked them out, made them try and get away from Ruby as a defense mechanism

OR… maybe “time” or the whole loop itself REQUIRED that ruby get abandoned by certain people. If she hadn’t been abandoned by her mother then she might never have tried to go after Mad Jack. All of those people had to run away for the timeline to play out

I really do think we’ll get an explanation/it’s tied to Ruby’s mysterious origins. /who/ has always been very hateful and negative. I remember /who/ of old hating the world enough and time and the doctor falls. You guys are overly negative, reddit is overly positive… where are the people that want to have actual fair conversations about this?

      Anonymous

It can't be B, because two of the people who ran away know she's a time traveller. And Unit as a whole has dealt with time travel bs before.

It could be like a reflex to run away from time loops/paradoxes… like “leave me out of it.” If they get involved they’re in danger. But i know we’ve never seen that in doctor who before, not from ordinary human beings

Yeah I think the harbinger/ghost lady was like a benevolent vessel/spirit/entity that counters Mad Jack who's the evil spirit created from all the people killed in the castles on those cliffs.

The war between the land and the sea line might be a reference to this battle between Mad Jack and that woman who bound him, good and evil spirits. Mad Jack acting through a human directly with Gwilliam and the woman indirectly through Ruby.

    “The one who waits”

Ruby, for some reason that we don’t yet know, creates split, new timelines… often.

Step on a butterfly… new timeline

She waited all her life to “resolve” the timeline we saw and get back to the one with the Doctor.

In fact, every single episode is a new timeline. The Doctor generally picks an iconic look. Every episode shows a new timeline/alternate universe where he’s picked a different outfit.

And susan twist? It’s the same person but in different times and places across each timeline/universe

      Ruby is Space Dandy confirmed

They acknowledge other episodes in the season so I doubt they're different universes each time. Space Babies mentions the Goblins and the Doctor's relieved when it starts snowing in Boom instead of being surprised/spooked like before.

I thought it was interesting they referenced the perception filter in this episode even though I doubt it had anything to do with that woman following Ruby since it seemed more supernatural. Maybe Susan Twist has a perception filter though because she blends into all the different times like a TARDIS is supposed to camouflage. Her actual name in the finale leaked and its' Susan Triad, S. Triad is an anagram for TARDIS, there's something wrong with the TARDIS this season because it keeps groaning etc. We already had the TARDIS in a human body in The Doctor's Wife so I don't think they're rehashing that completely but there's something going there. The S14 finale has the TARDIS as the title card even.

          >Susan named the TARDIS
I'm not sure where RTD got this idea that the time lords were genocided across time from though but I'm guessing that ties into the bigger arc. Makes me think that the Empire of Death is the Time Lords and they've all somehow become trapped inside the TARDIS which is why it's ill. And Susan Twist is the soul of his granddaughter or something related to these dead Time Lords who are sealed inside the TARDIS trying to get out. Reminds me a little of the Genesis Ark that held millions of Daleks. Haunted TARDIS basically. And Susan is like the harbinger.

Susan Twist is the IRL name of the actress who plays Ruby's neighbor, the hiker woman, and other background characters.

She's an actress that played Newton's maid in the specials then a random character in each of Ncuti's episode.

Odds are someone just grabbed a random extra for a tiny part then when RTD saw the name thought "I was planning on the twist at the end of the next season being Susan's return, so wouldn't it be a funny trick to play on the fans if I cast her in every episode?"

Reactions to this week’s episode prove that some fans of this show will lap up any old shite and say it’s kino. Fortunately, causal viewers know it’s slop and that’s why the ratings are in the toilet. Wilderness 2 isn’t far away if this is what Russell calls the best thing he’s written for television.

I liked it up until she got locked out of her mom's house. I even liked the first part of the UNIT scene, but it felt weird that they make a point of it that what the woman is telling everybody is incredibly important in some way, and then never expand on it for the viewer. The political section was weirdly thrown in, but I thought the resolution to it tied in nicely with the rules established. And then it just keeps going, loops back to the start without stepping on the circle, and ends. I genuinely can't tell if I missed something or not

I don't think it was so much anything she was telling those people but that being in her presence elicits some kind of deep primal fear/hatred in her and by extension Ruby because they're linked. I did think the political subplot was shoehorned in though and didn't really add anything. Shouldn't have strayed from the horror atmosphere in the first act.

          Anonymous

If that's the intention, they didn't really present it that well. The way Kate was able to hear something over the comms while Ruby couldn't hear anything over the phone as well as everybody responding with "ask her" put a lot of emphasis on what's being said to them that Ruby can't find out about. But that's RTD for you, his episodes were almost always the worst written of his original era.

            Anonymous

There's nothing that woman could've said that'd justify Ruby's adoptive mother and Kate's reactions. Like I said I don't think it's important and it's more of a Lovecraftian thing like hearing it's voice gives you some terrifying vision or literally makes you hate a person because episode is clearly dealing with the supernatural and RTD made that very clear in interviews. I don't think the episode is perfect either but it's supposed to be illogical in a way that's unnerving and weird. Like a nightmare where everyone inexplicably hates you or you can't remember a person's face. It's operating under those rules or lack thereof.

I’m also black. I can’t speak the two Eddie Murphy roles because I haven’t seen them but I think The Doctor, black or otherwise, should be written like The Doctor. I don’t see why that should be so hard. We had an interesting thing going in The Giggle and Ruby Road. 15 felt like a cross between 9 and 11. 9’s relaxed and lowkey confidence combined with 11’s excitement and wonder. This characterization made sense too. He let go of his “trauma” with 14 and Donna so he could afford to be a bit more chill and assured, but at the same time he’s experiencing new things for the first time. He’s a youngish black man. He’s a biregeneration. And with the Timeless Child reveal he’s learning to think about himself differently. The parts in Ruby Road with the gravity gloves and learning the language of rope were great, also the scene with the policeman.

yeah but it also shows how ill fitting ncuti is for the part when all the Doctor dialogue is just totally flat and forced because the character he's playing in every other episode is Gay Therapy Man and not the Doctor

That’s just like the Kuleshov effect. You think he more fit to be a gay therapy man only because we’ve seen him more as Gay Therapy Man than as The Doctor at this point. He seems perfectly capable of being a good, if not great Doctor, but I guess that’s not what RTD is interested in seeing.

          Anonymous

Maybe black people just can't hack the part and should refuse to blackwash White characters. But they're all too far up their own asses to stop thinking about their own race for a second and focus.

Could’ve been epic if it was a character piece in the pub . Really felt like that was the set up but nope . A bit disappointing over all. If they wanted an ending where the old woman finally catches up to Ruby and loops her back to fix the timeline they should have had the nursing home built on the site where Ruby first saw her or something like that. It made no sense for the old woman to suddenly catch up to her in some random location and transport her back in time to the cliffside, even in dream logic. They should have made a convergence point.

How does that tie in to him just being just some neocon war hawk irresponsible with nukes? Still don't get why the world would be interested in a country that already has nukes acquring more nukes.

With the one who waits changing what she says to the Doctor and stopping him from stepping in the circle this meant that whole timeline didn't happen so when it does play out they will have to find some other way to stop him. Considering how the last episode of this series is supposedly involving war and the aftermath of it, that might mean his return as the unexpected big bad of the series and the scene you're thinking of.
