Does The Boys getter better? NO SPOILERS

I've watched the first episode so far and holy frick it's so bad. It's like it was written in 2005 by an edgy teenager. There's no subtlety at all, every single theme is being spelled out to you multiple times, predictable scenarios, almost everyone is cartoonishly evil and the message couldn't have been more obvious. Does it get better with time? Everyone is praising this show so much, is it worth watching?

It is actually stupidly concerned with incel behavior and privilege, the show is politically shallow and is literally about how different white people are just different types of nazis

        Anonymous

One white guy is killed via skinning by being dragged down a road for pointing out the 13/50 statistic and defending himself. The show clearly tries to program people to think the stat is fake, and that if anyone points it out they ought to be killed because its a heckin' racism. Plus a lot of other stuff. Honestly you can call me mentally ill if you want but I think media like this is what makes one "mentally ill." Most modern media is just ugliness that fills your head with dumb shit. This site is my last source of ugliness but no one leaves forever.

          Anonymous

          >media like this makes people mentally ill
Oh absolutely. The idea that race relations are some minefield that’s always going to come out, and the solution or punchline to any seemingly divisive thoughts is a comedy murder, it creates a bad heuristic for both progressives and the accused. They just throw in the reductive Twitter political argument of the day as an attention getter then they just brutalize everyone because it was always pulp fiction in the first place.

        Anonymous

I dont agree witht he notion that showing white people dying is some part of an agenda, but you can't deny the constant undertones of liberal values in the show. It's why i dropped it halfway through the first season. The comics were filled with propaganda but it was so blatant and so silly that i was okay with it. The 90's propaganda in pop culture is way more accessible.

Season 1 is somewhat palatable. They mostly take digs at the bush administration, which was so long ago and no one talks about it anymore that it almost felt refreshing. 2 and 3 is where they start being preachy about current day events (well, they're 2-3 years behind every season, but still) and you can't even call them undertones, the BLM and MAGA references are cartoonishly blatant. If the pattern holds, by the time s4 comes out it will be 2-3 years after covid and the vaccine, so I expect them to lecture the audience on that with zero subtlety (my quick prediction: some shit about temp-v becoming widespread and causing health issues, the boys being the good guys have a cure but the MAGAped- *ahem* stormchasers are spreading misinfo about it, etc.).

Season 1 is good with caveats.
Season 2 is watchable but political satire became too on the nose and an all-female scene in the end is just as bad as the Endgame one.
Season 3 is trash outside of Soldier Boy. Overall Homelander’s actor Carrie’s the show.

Season 2 was garbage on all fronts with The Boys becoming complete idiots where the only solution to every single problem is blackmail. Also the nazi supremacy without actually daring to act out the part, the awful Butcher's wife being alive plot etc.

Season 3 started out decent actually and the first half showed promise but it went back to repeating the same stupid tracks in the second half. Culminating in the hilariously bad my wife's son/teaming up against Soldier Boy for no good reason ending. Also Hughie/Starlight relationship and super serum abuse plot being plain cringe to watch.

It gets worse. Whenever you see criticism of this show people usually like the first few episodes and get disappointed as the show goes on. It gets edgier, filthier and yet completely spineless when it comes to plot development. To like this show through and through is to be a moronic redditor who actually enjoys the on-the-nose political commentary and edgy gore scenes, because that's all it is and it only gets more vapid every season.

  12. 10 months ago

Nah. If your interest didn't last through the first episode it doesn't really get better. I actually dropped it midway season 2 and never looked back for no particular reason. Usually I'd finish a season before dropping a show but one day I just realized I was several episodes behind and didn't care. It's just a forgettable nothing of a show really. Homelander was a fun character throughout season 1 I suppose but not worth forcing yourself to watch for.

It's so frustrating how the show goes to great lengths on gags and background details. But completely drops the ball when it comes to the writing and story development. They film whole commercials and trailers for in-universe products. Imagine a show with The Boys' budget and set design, but with writing to match.

The Boys has moments of greatness that for me were heist and CIA backstory scenes where our motley crew has to improvise a solution to a superhero problem. They disappear from the show by the end of S2 in favor of the shittiest of capeshit plots and preachy drama (there are at least a dozen shoehorned subplots that dunk on Christianity). So no, the show gets much, much worse and mid-S2 is as far as you should watch.

I don't want Black Noir to be a clone. I want him to be immortal like Stormfront. I want Stormfront and Black Noir to have a reckoning about their ability to self-heal, their vastly differentvl motives for joining Vought (or being enslaved to Vought), and their parental protective love for Homelander.
