The problem is really that Marvel by now has completely lost trust of the audience on their "main plot", while also having lost their most popular heroes. Ant-Man 3 was a huge mistake. But even before that, their idea of just making the movie tease random very distant future things, rather than something with immediate pay off, like the Avenger's formation was a huge mistake.

Audiences DO want "good" movies (as in movies that appeal to them). Not all good movies will succeed. Sometimes, films come out at the wrong time and Furiosa came out at the wrong time. It's a prequel to a 10 year old movie that didn't have an entry for nearly 30 years until that point. Furiosa was already a hard point to sell after releasing so long after Fury Road.

          Anonymous

Fury Road wasn't successful either, some genres have such a niche appeal that even 5-star entries can't gain traction (Furiosa wasn't the 5 star Fury Road was).
Sometimes the path to success is just having Chris Pratt wave his hands at CGI Dinosaurs (again and again).

Adding to this, NONE of the Road Warrior movies have made a splash at the box office. Sure the original made "le 100x it's budget", but it's budget was a pallet of Foster's and some cameras.

It would take multiple films in a row to reverse the perception. A single movie in a sea of Madame Web isn't going to fix the perception

              Anonymous

The problem is you're assuming that normies are all invested in the perception. Normal people are fickle. A lot of the stuff people are watching has a viral quality, social media buzz, conversation points or FOMO (fear of missing out). Hence why the latest netflix true story type shit does well. This film has a little bit more buzz than others in part because of some of its social media stuff.

The problem with these grand narrative perceptions like superhero fatigue is the assumption that everyone else holds that opinion. The old MCU banked on a bunch of FOMO until FOMO turned bad... investment of time, money and effort was better with the early MCU as there was 2-3 films a year building to team ups. Now there are multiple shows/movies no team ups AND the quality is bad. A few good movies and the perception could change.

Getting people to go to the cinema at all has been a struggle in recent years and it took a viral Barbenheimer meme last year. This year Dune Part 2 really had to push "it is epic on the big screen" and even that hasn't done as well as movies of previous years.

                How true is this?

                Anonymous

A lot of normal people aren't in the same perpetually online bubbles as culture warriors or people here. Part of the reason films are doing bad is:
                >Cinemas are expensive.
                >Economy and inflation hit people hard.
                >Films come to streaming quicker, which is cheaper.
                >People have an over abundance of other entertainment like video games or youtube/tiktok or whatever.
                >Film budgets are too high.
                >No secondary market e.g. DVDs.
People said they were done with the MCU post-Endgame and yet some of the bigger hitter movies did better and the OP suggests Deadpool is on track to do better. I think a lot of normal people are not done with superheroes, not as much as they say they are. The problem is the cinema has become the big event place and you need to create a big event by more than their pitiful marketing. Word of mouth, viral influences, matter a lot to overturn people not wanting to spend money.

We'll see how much this holds up after James Gunns Superman movie comes out. Even if that's a good movie, that's likely going to at least underperform.
People aren't going to see Deadpool & Wolverine because they still love the MCU, they're going for Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds. Other superhero movies after this don't have any sort of gimmick going for them.

Pretty much this. All that's really left for the MCU (and all that they've been doing) are, at best, C and D list characters and teams, right down to Z listers, at least to the eyes of casuals. I guess it remains to be seen if interest will come back when they get the FF and X-Men back in, but fir the last few years the super hero movies have been shit like Eternals, Marvels, Shang Chi, etc, and most don't know or give a shit about going that deep. They were already pushing it with C-listers like GotG, but they wove it in well enough, and stamped reddit humor into it so everyone stuffing their faces with popcorn just loved it and ate it up.

Not like that matters since Logan was already clearly an alternate universe from the other X-men movies, and so was Deadpool

Logan was always an alternate universe from the other X-Men films (no mutants were born from 2004–2029, while Days of Future Past had tons of mutant students in the new 2023), and this Wolverine is also a variant from a different world than the X-Men films (this Wolverine somehow "let everydone down" and most/all of his friends died a year after DoFP). Deadpool, from the Deadpool films (which I personally believe to also be a different universe than the X-Men films), is the only returning character.
