DON'T SEE The Thing in theaters June 19th and 22nd

Hey Cinemaphile, for anyone who has tickets for or is interested in seeing The Thing on June 19th or 22nd, as presented by Fathom Events, you should know that they're going to be showing it via streaming by satellite. Based on comments made by people online, these satellite streams tend to be noticeably low quality, particularly when blown up to a large theater screen.
This company, Fathom Events, has a lot of showings like these of older movies among other things, and it seems that how they show them falls into 2 categories: streamed over their "Digital Broadcast Network" (DBN) or by the theater receiving a "Digital Cinema Package" (DCP) wherein they receive actual files to play, in which case the quality is much better than the DBN method of lower quality streaming over satellite.
There have been many reports about DBN screenings of films being visibly low quality and otherwise dissatisfying.
Check this thread for more info (especially the last couple of pages): https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=316302
I was excited to go see it next week but now I think I'm going to cancel my tickets. My apologies for shilling this event, hopefully any anons that need to know this read this post.

Ehh, I can just download the crisp restored 4K UHD version. My screen is big enough and I'm not looking to get sick at the theater anyway.

That's what I was hoping they were going to show when I learned about this. Big disappointment in learning all this info.
      >big enough
But not quite as big as a theater eh? Anyway the best part of seeing it in a theater is seeing it with a crowd, can't quite get that at home.

Not sure how seeing something in a crowd is a plus during a pandemic. I'm excited for the rerelease but I'm just going to stick to my plex and home theater

        >But not quite as big as a theater eh?
I actually did the math the other week, given my viewing distance I think it worked out that my monitor is like sitting a row or two back of the middle seats, which is where I usually sit anyway. Sure, my screen isn't 25 feet wide, but I'm not sitting 15 feet away from it.

I'll never understand the mentality of "muh big screen" morons.

Anyone who goes to a theater, or buys a television or monitor is an idiot for this reason. My phone has a 4k OLED screen, and it's basically an IMAX screen when I hold it 3 inches from my face, not to mention that unlike all those other screens, it's portable. You should sell your monitor and get a nice phone before everyone realizes this fact and you're unable to even give that monitor away for free.

            >when I hold it 3 inches from my face

You might as well get a VR shell for it at that point.

This will probably be my next home theater purchase though I'm iffy on the quality of the glass, I don't want my glorious high def phone screen to be muddied by some low quality glass in the way.

Except human eyes have a convergence distance. A screen needs to be suitably sized according to its resolution, like the minimum a 4k screen should be is about 40". But past that point? There's no real difference between focusing on a screen 2 feet away and focusing on one 12 feet away, the only difference is that you have to buy a much bigger screen to get the same picture quality at 12 feet.

Well all that talk just sounds to me like you're trying to justify wasting money due to having moronic eyes. My eyes work just fine.

this, if you buy a big ass screen you save a lot of money by not going to theaters, even more if you pirate.
a big ass screen pays itself in the long run, and you own it.
going to a theater is paying for something is not yours, and never will.

Doesn't say if it's DBN or not
Also, that thread's latest reply is from 3 years ago, while the ones talking about really poor quality are from essentially a decade ago
Also also, if anything that would closer replicate the original cinema experience for the thing than any digital restoration probably
tldr I'll still go watch it because why the frick not, it's close

The thread's latest reply is from yesterday, on page 20.
And the post confirming it as DBN is on page 17, #335: https://forum.blu-ray.com/showpost.php?p=20132925&postcount=335
But apart from that I emailed them yesterday and they replied to me today:

This event is being broadcast via DBN so it will not be in 4k.

        But is sattelite above 480p?
I dont care for 4k, the screen I'll see it at wouldn't make a difference past 1080

          Anonymous

You know I would hope it's 1080p at least but based on the comments people have made about DBN showings, I'm not even sure of that. Even setting aside resolution, we have to consider compression and bitrate, it'd be a real shit time if you're watching a movie on a big screen and start seeing compression artifacts.
Anyway my tickets are for the 22nd, maybe I'll ask on the 20th for opinions from people who saw it on the 19th, before cancelling. When are your tickets for?

how fricking insanely ....cheap? what? i dunno .. do you have to be to project some crappy stream instead of a 4k copy you can buy for $20? who are these fricking freaks?

  3. 2 years ago
    Anonymous

The bitrate of streams on a corporate level is so bad that it shouldn't be legal
You should have to match the bitrate of a blu ray or exceed it to justify a ticket price

Good to know, anon. Not sure why they're showing a classic winter movie in the summer. Who gives a shit it was realized in June 1982? It's clearly become a film, like The Shining, that encapsulates winter feelings.

Amazon is selling the 4k blu-ray edition for like $13 so I think I'll probably just jump on that instead.

    They have 4k DUNC+4k Sicario+4k The Thing for $36.

Tell us more about it. What was the ratio of fans to first timers you think?

DCP is already shit, I can only imagine how bad DBN is. If you want to see a movie, see it on 35mm.

i told you morons this when you made the other thread. these showings are a fricking meme. the only time you should go is when they advertise they are showing an original print. you're just watching a fricking digital file most of the time its the actual blu ray.

Such a thing isn't always easy to find. If they're showing a 4k copy I can't imagine it'll outright be "shit".
Also where would a 35mm print come from? Would it be one made 40 years ago? Or are there newer reels produced periodically?

        Anonymous

It was almost half and half, we were asked how many had seen the film before. The first time viewers were beyond scared during the blood test.

its either well preserved orignal prints like a local indie theater or if the owners of the film are involved they make copies of the original master or a good original print. either way its a copy most of the time if it's a wide release type of thing. for film that. but theatres/distributors stopped doing that these days because they're lazy homosexuals. they rather just send a file over.

Where I live, I can recall a couple times The Thing has played on film. Sometimes a studio will produce a new print if the movie is famous enough, but usually rep theaters just use prints from the movie's first run.

Any comments on the degradation of film over time? I can see how even 4k digital is going to get beat by a proper 35mm reel, but I wonder for a 40 year old movie if there are issues that might arise due to the physical characteristics of film.

I always suspected these brief throwback screenings used the lower quality promotional material projectors that theaters use between movies to show their endless commercials, not the main projectors. Never considered they were just streaming those.

Son, there comes a time when every parent has to let their child go forth and make their own choices. All that I hope is that I've given you the tools to make the best choices for yourself. Whatever happens, I just want you to know that I'll always love you.

It was almost half and half, we were asked how many had seen the film before. The first time viewers were beyond scared during the blood test.

      Interesting, who did the asking?
Were they scared during the build-up or did they have their guard down til the blood jumped?
That stuff is exactly why I want to watch it in a theater.

A host before the movie started. You could see people scoot to the edge of their seats in your peripheral vision. My friend had never seen it and she was tugging my arm like "WHO!?!?". It was seriously great. Chuckles during the appropriate moments of levity, gasps and jumps during suspenseful moments. But the blood test had the loudest scream I have ever heard in a theater.
