This film is unpleasant : The arguments with toxic dialogue, Fiona killing Ariel with a grin, two dead fish on a dirty fish bowl, Shrek's pessimistic attitude in the early scenes, Fairy Godmother's hateful personality, Harold's bigoted attitude, the lack of affable conversations, Godmother's bodyguard assaulting an old man like Harold by pushing him out the limo carriage, the assassination attempt in the woods, the potion factory using caged animals as test subjects and having some hazmat suit workers ride on a spinning machine for no reason, Godmother pretending to read the endings of fairytales to let Shrek know that ogres aren't in any of those "happily ever afters", Godmother manipulating Shrek in allowing Charming to steal his identity and his wife, the lust filled love potion meant for Fiona, the police brutality scene, one of the blind mice always looking in the wrong direction everytime they appear, the forced kiss on Fiona, the giant gingerbread man dying on that moat on the same night he was made, everyone happily dancing at the end while the viewer knows that Charming just accidentally lost his mother and is now an orphan, etc.

Forgot the "joke" about bodyslamming little dog to death. Only thing more disgusting was sknning the Mama Bear in Shrek 1

The writers had little background gags like the mama bear in shrek 1 and most people didn't even notice.

Maybe this wouldn't be a problem if the film had some children characters, but it doesn't. Everyone on it is an adult. This gives the film a cynical atmosphere and it makes that unpleasant content more noticeable.

    >We’re not going
    >What?
    >I mean, don’t you think they might be a bit shocked to see you like this?
    >Well, they might be a bit surprised. But they’re my parents, Shrek. They love me. And don’t worry, they're gonna love you too
    >Yeah, right. Somehow I don’t think I’ll be welcome at the country club
    >Will you stop it? They’re not like that
    >Then how do you explain Sergeant Pompous and the Fancy Pants Club Band?
    >Oh, come on. You could at least give them a chance
    >Oh, to do what? Sharpen their pitchforks?
    >No! They just want to give you their blessing
    >Oh, great. Now I need their blessing?
    >Well If you want to be a part of this family, yes
    >And who says I want to be part of this family?
    >Uh, you did? When you married me?
    >Well, there’s some fine print for you
    >So that's it? You won't come?
    >Trust me, it's a bad idea. We're not going and that's final

    >She's just trying to help
    >Good. She can help us pack. Get your coat, dear. We’re leaving
    >What? When did you decide this?
    >Shortly after arriving

    >Very nice, Shrek
    >What? I told you coming here was a bad idea
    >You could’ve at least tried to get along with my father
    >You know, somehow I don’t think I was going to get daddy’s blessing even if I did want it
    >Well do you think it might be nice if somebody asked me what I wanted?
    >Sure. Do you want me to pack for you?

It lasts almost 83 minutes without credits. There's also a small credits scene (the one with the donkey/dragon offsprings) which almost lasts 1 minute. So in total, there are almost 84 minutes of CGI footage in this film.

    >Shrek is good at painting, cooking (the weedrat scene), and wrestling, plus likes to watch the stars because "they tell stories". He's also a reader since he owns a fairytale book, isn't above using metaphors (like onions having layers), likes to shower with mud, likes eating vegetables/slug eyeballs, and sometimes says gruesome things ("ogres make a suit from your freshly peeled skin, shave your liver, and squeeze the jelly from your eyes")

    >Fiona likes to sing, has a fiery/intelligent personality, is good at cooking (the fried eggs), knows how to use the environment to her advantage (like using the bark of a tree as a door), and isn't above doing things like plucking off the petals from a sunflower while saying "i tell him, i tell him not"

    >Donkey likes humming songs and is a fan of waffles and parfaits, plus doesn't understand some jokes (the "compensating for something" joke) and is a bit gullible (the blue flower with red thorns scene)
Character traits from 1 that didn't come back in 2. Get out of here with your "2 is better" meme.

That "Little Drop of Poison" song by Tom Waits was first used in the 1997 film The End of Violence, over six years before Shrek 2 also used it on a tavern scene. It plays on minute 88.

Some of the writing here is coarse-salted even for Dreamworks standards. No other DW films has lines such as "lucky day, hunk buffet, you and your prince take a roll in the hay", or "i say we grab his sword and neuter him right here", or "they'll write on the bathroom wall : For a happily ever after, give Fiona a call", or "police brutality" during an arrest, or a boy saying "I'm wearing ladies underwear", or a character hanging from the leg of a floating woman and saying "i see london, i see france".

      Anonymous

Besides the neuter and police brutality joke, they did a good job rushing past that dialog. (Even as an adult, I didn't process most of those). I actually kind of dig just how cynical the characters are in this. The first film was a hopeful story about true love that subverts Disney trends. This film feels like it takes a sledgehammer to the idea of true love entirely. Meeting family sucks...and you will always fall short of others expectations. Fairy Godmother believes "love" can be gamed and commodified with enough money, style, and lust. It was going to work before shrek interrupted the party (with or without the potion). The only sliver of goodness was Fiona's choice to stay an Ogre....but even then it's a story choice that proves to everyone in the audience thst they are a cynic aswell. Because everyone...would choose to stay beautiful over being an ogre....absolutely everyone. So in that sense this film is a masterpiece.

I don't think Dreamworks would've become such a punchline in the mid 00s if this film never existed. Oh sure, Shark Tale would've left a weird taste in people's mouths and Madagascar wouldn't have been everyone's cup of tea, but Dreamworks's reputation still wouldn't have suffered as much. I was there in the mid 00s when people treated them as a joke. I think Shrek 2 is the main reason why that happened.
