Dr Who: Weeping Angels

So....their power is to send someone back in time and feed on the difference in time energy between their current time and the time they're going to, right? But then, how does that work with parenting? If you're sent back 70 years, how can your parents give birth to you if you are already alive long before them? Does it just create an alternate timeline? That wouldn't make sense because Cathy clearly communicates with Sally in 'Blink' through a letter....

A person living in a time before they're born doesn't make sense IRL but it does if you can travel back in time. There's no inherent contradiction there.

      Anonymous

No, but even then it doesn't make sense because it's not like they're travelling back in time for a brief moment. If you're sent back to 1907, how can your parents give birth to you in the 1980s? And if they don't give birth to you, do they just disappear from the timeline too? You'd essentially have to erase like three generations of your own family in a time paradox for this to make sense.

        >If you're sent back to 1907, how can your parents give birth to you in the 1980s?
Presumably by fricking each other in the 1980s.
Now if you're talking about preventing your own birth, that does create a paradox, but I don't see a reason that simply travelling back in time would mean that you can't be born.

there's one timeline - your own as a person and the other, let's call it the general one. You continue to move forward through your own BUT you moved back in the general one. As for the paradoxes like killing your parents before you are born - we are in a fixed timeline. You can't do that because you didn't do that.

        Anonymous

You're confused. You going back in time doesn't change the timeline of your family. Your parents still fricked in 1980. You still lived in 1980 - present. Then you got sent back to 1907 as if you took a cab there.

Just think of it as travelling from place to place except it's from one time to another. They don't make it so that your entire life is moved backwards in time, only you at that precise current moment they touched you. Your life still continues on normally and you age normally, but you were moved to another time. It's way less complex than what you're probably assuming it is.

I honestly don't understand how you're confused about this.

Because it doesn't make sense without creating a paradox. How can I live and have kids *before* my parents have even conceived me? Or before my parents are even born?

        Anonymous

You were alive 2003 to 2022. You are 19 years old. You, as a 19 year old, are then sent back to 1903. It doesnt undo your birth in 2003.

    >If you're sent back 70 years, how can your parents give birth to you if you are already alive long before them?
Because like 50 years later your parents would hump, have you, and then you'd get your ass sent back 70 years when you were an adult.

So at some point along that timeline there's two versions of you? If you're 80 in 1980 and your parents frick and a year later have you, then at some point there's two versions of you existing at the same time.

It would only create a paradox if you did something to prevent yourself from getting weeping angeled in the future.

A paradox is a logical contradiction. If there's a paradox, you should be able to explain it.

Why would it? You living in some shitty countryside while the younger you lives in some completely different place without ever interacting does not break the world or anything. You being sent to the past does not change absolutely anything about the way you were brought up, as long as your two selves don't interact. This is such a weird hill to die on.

Well actually if you do anything which affects your ancestors it'll affect you.

If you kill a bee that would've got in your grandpas face later, and his pause wouldve resulted in seeing your grandma and consequently their relationship. You never exist.

                >Well actually if you do anything which affects your ancestors it'll affect you.
that's a bullshit rule. I mean, we shouldn't restrict ourselves only to stuff that affects (you). If you go back in time, then just being there changes the past. The only reasonable solution to that is prisoner of azkaban and implied lack of "free will" that goes with it.

Broseph...you watch Doctor Who. A show about a time traveler who lives for thousands of years, has multiple incarnations, and routinely goes to times that he was already alive in. Not to mention he occasionally interacts with his past selves. Yet you're confused about a personal, linear timeline?

I'm not forgetting something am I? Sure dealing with birth certificates and stuff would be a problem but plenty of worse things could happen. If they were real you would have people deliberately letting themselves get caught just so they could back and not have to deal with current year.

It's pretty funny, actually. Even the very first victim of the first Angel in the show writes a letter to her friend from the past like "Damn, this life is kinda based tbh". Imagine the power you'd have as someone sent back in time. You have knowledge of the future, you could literally change the course of history if you aren't lazy.

Time paradoxes aside, it violates thermodynamics. There should be less time energy in a future point than a past point. Sending someone to the past should be an energy-negative act, so I don't see where the excess energy would come from for them to feed on.
