He died to save Gohan, that was his punishment and atonement. I think he should have remained dead too because everything that happened to him since his resurrection has been varying degrees of awful. Comedy relief, babysitting, etc, even before Dragon Ball Super. He's not even the same character anymore.

His family died and all of his friends abandoned him out of fear. It was a pretty standard backstory but not a bad one. What was bad is that it didn't do a good job of telling it.
