Could a Judge Dredd cartoon work if its the same vein as Invincible and Vox Machina? Ya know. Shows blood, guts, and violence.

If we avoid the generic Facism bad storyl, which is self-evident. It will be Ennis-tier garbage.
Ennis maanged to derail JD and it's been downhill into safe by the numbers slop every since.
That… is such bullshit, god damn
It would have to be brittish-made. A show about police brutality would never fly in present day United States.
Touch grass
A show about a white male would never fly in present day Britain.
Don't worry, mass deportations are ahead. Those new Brits offended the chosen.
a show about effective police officers in Great Britain might not prevent Fascism...
seriously, Bobby's are a joke. once the locals figure out what effective police look like, they're gonna start agitating for that.
Eh, maybe. It would have to be pretty short, though. Most of the stories outside of epics are pretty short and surprisingly some of the best ones fit in a single prog so they're like five or six pages long at most. You could get away with one episode padding the runtime with 'man on bike rides through city' but can only do that so many times. I'm not even touching the possible politics of the setting and characters in Modern Era Media™.
Wasn't Rebellion actually doing their own studio? I'm pretty sure it went ass-over when the Sino Sneeze hit.
This too, peoples' perception is kind of warped by the 90s Dredd era and the two movies. Usually you get like one panel of someone getting ventilated or a cartoony splat-mark where someone jumped out a window and that's it unless they're leaning hard on the gorn this week.
I've never seen the Stallone one
I can't imagine them greenlighting it.
Because
I don't even think it necessarily needs to be a hard R violent. A weak R with violence, and only some guts, focusing more on the fantastic side of the world would work.
Right. JD of the 1980's would be OK.
Judge Dredd is not as gory as people seem to think it is.
I would rather Heavy Metal come back as an anthology series where each 45 minute episode vignettes on various British comics, Dredd being one of them while other aspects of that universe could be sprinkled in like another episode about the ABC Warriors, or Nemesis the Warlock, etc. This could then be used a springboard for more, like an actual animated Dredd focused miniseries.
>Dredd being one of them while other aspects of that universe could be sprinkled in like another episode about the ABC Warriors, or Nemesis the Warlock, etc.
Well damn anon, that's not Heavy Metal or even Brit comics in general, that's just a Best of 2000AD which I'm 100% on board with because the more people I get to tell about Nikolai Dante, the better.
>retro-sci-fi future where Russia takes over the world
...fuck, I guess they ain't doing that one, huh?
I had no idea Heavy Metal even died, shit.
yeah it was meant to have a relaunch this year but that got cancelled so Heavy metal is basically dead now
Darn. Old Heavy Metal back issues my old man had were my gateway to adulthood, or at least to puberty. That and Quake 3 Arena. That said I'm not surprised it was on its last legs, even aside from how you can just go on the internet now and see things instead of having to find some dusty old pages with a sick-ass Frazetta fight scene or Sorayama sex-robot on the cover and scintillating titties inside (or as people more eloquent than myself have put it, it's harder to make money on an art book with minimum story than something that tries for both each week). Wasn't it under mismanagement for quite a few years now?
>Wasn't it under mismanagement for quite a few years now?
I don't know but most comics have been mismanaged the only thing I remember about Heavy metal from recent years is people complaining about covering up Taarna and then calling the remaining fanbase incels
so. just a 2000AD show rather than heavy metal
at least with a cartoon you don't have to worry about finding physical match-ups to the law jaw
You do have to worry about them making Hershey chocolate
I get the pun but by Grud don't you even put those terrifying thoughts in my head you son of a bitch.
There is NO fucking way they could resist that.
But having some judge fucking Giant in play wouldn't be bad.
Who's the highest profile black female judge?
judge giant isn't even an ass-pull considering Giant Jr. is still one of the recurring street judges (unless something has changed)
Hamida probably, or that bald Psi
at least 50% of the episode budget must go to animating the swishiness of her bob cut or I WILL riot
>Shows blood, guts, and violence.
If thats all you think a good Dredd cartoon would need then no, it would not work.
>mfw now I'm almost THREE years behind reading the progs
I swear my favorite thing about Dredd is frown
Why does Dredd always frown like he's smelling the worst fart ever
You'd frown like that too, living in the Big Meg.
Damn Dredd, what that mouth do homie?
>Why does Dredd always frown like he's smelling the worst fart ever
Funny you should say that...
Have a Grudd-blessed, crime free day anons.
ISOCUBES, NOW.
When i was younger I watched aeon flux and kinda wished Dredd had a show in that style. Now a cartoon like the netflix "anime" would probably work fine.
My issue is modern dredd writers and the rebellion/2000ad team (Matt smith mainly, the kingsleys are too busy playing medieval kings) just care about showing how "in touch with the down trodden" they are. Hell Wagner wrote a beautiful death to one of his longest running dredd characters outside of dredd and anderson, then 2 weeks later Matt Smith lets a writer i use to actually respect, shit all over that and bring her back from the dead.
Also, rebellion would probably push a kids cartoon about the dredd cadets because for some reason despite not selling they think aiming for kids is the way too go.
Up until 2019 i use to buy jdm and toothy, but now I pirate and find myself some times skipping whole progs because the stories in them are trash.
I hate how a series that used to be known for "yeah, people die, they're kaput" now just goes 'well it's a flashback! well it was a fake out! look, old Hershey! Frank is back too!' NO ONE was upset with the send-off she got, at least so far as I'm aware. If nothing else it was a dignified end to a character who had unfortunately long since become a cardboard cutout for Dredd to go 'grrr rules' at until she was replaced with Chief Judge Muttonchops. I did not care for the stuff that came after, but I'm just ranting at this point. You want a good story that takes place in the Banana City? Returners is fucking batshit and great, or at least the first story of it is. I could only take so much 'monochrome watercolor Hershey is angry to find CORRUPT CITY is CORRUPT.'
I should get back to working my way through Dredd. When should I stop? I assume at some point the whole thing becomes worthless.
the 90s are rough, past that it's good again
even when it seems worthless sometimes there's a diamond in the rough, plus the megazine usually has good stuff (in recent years, some of the best)
Thanks lads
Just read till yoh are skipping more stories than not.
The main tell tale sign its going to the rocks is when every event is dredd as a side character while the team of other more diverse judges (thw diversity is not a bad thing, judge is a favourite of mine, but its usually wonen and giant) saving the day.
Dredd has always had hit or miss stories, but lately its more miss.
The consensus, least in the non dick sucking groups is hershey had a great end and its a reoccur joke at this point about hershey coming back again and again and again.
>Just read till yoh are skipping more stories than not.
and remember that at that point there's loads of other stuff to read, even if you're skipping the main strip you absolu-fucking-lutely should NOT skip stuff like dreams of deadworld
>Dredd has always had hit or miss stories, but lately its more miss.
aye, it pains me. i don't give a stomm what color judges are (being used to black and white and no color at all) nor with dredd being a side piece, but if you're gonna stick him on the side, just leave him out entirely! there's a whole city full of street judges there and frankly i'd rather have six pages of Maitland looking cute while filling out spreadsheets than five pages of whatever with a mandatory 'one panel dredd appearance complaining about <thing>'
>The consensus, least in the non dick sucking groups
i was gonna say i have no idea where these are, but in reality i have no idea where people talk about these comics period, since Cinemaphile is my only social media and i was pretty sure comics that aren't the big two american ones are pretty much dead on most platforms discussion-wise. but yeah, the character had/has outstayed her use/welcome- not by choice, but by years of mediocre writing and off-panel status quo returnal (what happened to the hershey that outright told dredd to stop making empty resignation threats or get the fuck out of her office for good?) and it would have been better for her role to just end and let he who enjoys pale skin and dark bobs just hold onto the earlier issues and/or his smaller but still important folder of lulu romanov images, but no, we have to bring out the dead again like it's that monty python skit
Whoops, sorry I missed you. Thanks to you too, singular lad
no problem, buddy.
Fortunetly or everyone, Hersey had a heart attack in Anartica City doing a bust. So that's finally resolved.
2024: the heart attack was actually a malfunction caused intentionally in a long-stored Dominatrix sexbot that was dug out of a closet in a hotel room PJ Maybe stayed in one time and Hershey Prime is back!
>would dredd work if it was written by leftwing homosexuals?
>written by leftwing homosexuals
Couldn't every writer in the UK comics industry classified as that?
