I'm on my first watch of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, after finishing both TOS and TNG. I just completed Season 1 last night. It's better than TNG Season 1, but it isn't without its missteps. Here are my thoughts. The two worst episodes (besides Move Along Home) are Jax and Dramatis Personae. The Emissary is good but overrated. Vortex is incredibly underrated. Besides the obvious standout, Duet, Vortex might be my favorite of the season, alongside Captive Pursuit. Babel is a fun filler episode. Progress and If Wishes Were Horses are both overhated; I really enjoyed both for obviously very different reasons. The Storyteller and The Passenger are both just fine, although I prefer the former to the latter. A Man Alone, Q-Less, and Battle Lines all feel like wasted opportunities. At least A Man Alone sets up some good Odo stuff. Q and Sisko have some fun interactions. Battle Lines has Jonathan Banks and a commendable Kira meltdown. The Nagus is fine, but I find the eponymous Nagus to be incredibly annoying. Forsaken is just fine in a vacuum, but I was so impressed by Lwaxana being a likable, relatable character that I walked away liking it more than I probably should. In the Hands of the Prophets is a good to great finale, but I honestly find Vedek Bariel kind of creepy. All in all, I'd give the season a 3.5/5. I'm really excited to start Season 2 with its three-part opener.
