DS9 Season 1

I'm on my first watch of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, after finishing both TOS and TNG. I just completed Season 1 last night. It's better than TNG Season 1, but it isn't without its missteps. Here are my thoughts. The two worst episodes (besides Move Along Home) are Jax and Dramatis Personae. The Emissary is good but overrated. Vortex is incredibly underrated. Besides the obvious standout, Duet, Vortex might be my favorite of the season, alongside Captive Pursuit. Babel is a fun filler episode. Progress and If Wishes Were Horses are both overhated; I really enjoyed both for obviously very different reasons. The Storyteller and The Passenger are both just fine, although I prefer the former to the latter. A Man Alone, Q-Less, and Battle Lines all feel like wasted opportunities. At least A Man Alone sets up some good Odo stuff. Q and Sisko have some fun interactions. Battle Lines has Jonathan Banks and a commendable Kira meltdown. The Nagus is fine, but I find the eponymous Nagus to be incredibly annoying. Forsaken is just fine in a vacuum, but I was so impressed by Lwaxana being a likable, relatable character that I walked away liking it more than I probably should. In the Hands of the Prophets is a good to great finale, but I honestly find Vedek Bariel kind of creepy. All in all, I'd give the season a 3.5/5. I'm really excited to start Season 2 with its three-part opener.

A few episodes early on where done as a sort of 'we aren't TNG' and shit hard, like Q-Less being a key example. It's only known for the 'lolz I just punched you I am not Picard'
It was also trying to establish character personalities early on. Like Keria being hard harded and bitter (ask her about the rape camps that nobody every heard about including her friends who were with her during the occupation), Sisko just trying to do the best as a father who lost his wife/son's mom and is now dealing with a frickery of new species into the federation that's religious amd being their fricking idol. O'Brien just being happy go lucky who wants to help. Jadzia being like 10 people in one (only one matter, Curzon). Odo being Worf but actually good at his job. Quark being le sneaky merchant.

It's not even that it's bad but watching them all closely together kills it imo as at the time it was once a week so you had time to sort of digest things. Here's almost like 'new story, different character, let's go to know more about them this time'

DS9 Blood Oath in Season 2 might just be one of the best Star Trek episodes ever.

Interesting. I can see where you're coming from, although I wouldn't call O'Brien happy, tbh. Also, I caught Blood Oath on a cytube stream, and I didn't care for it. Jax and the Klingons don't really work for me. I much prefer the Klingon episodes in TNG. Honestly, I want to like Jax, but I just don't so far. She felt almost passively suicidal in her solo episode in Season 1.

        It's a phrase, anon:
A happy-go-lucky person does not plan much and accepts what happens without becoming worried

Basically he's kinda just the 'everyman' who loves his wife and child and just likes his job and sometimes a main character of a story.

Jax was pretty fricking... weird. She was meant to be a lgbt icon (as a man she was married to women, as a woman, married to men) to show Trek was ok with them as was the common question at the time from lgbt fans. But she's also meant to be Data just like, instead of a super computer or like Spock being cold and smart, she's a normal woman but sometimes goes 'a previous host called moron5 once dealt with these aliens the federation just discovered so what I think is...'
I'm assuming you understand that DS9 and TNG obviously overlap form the first episode so there is more actual good Klingon stuff in later seasons
I'd say the only thing to keep in mind is that there's an overall plot in DS9 unlike TNG which is obvious from episode one and that a lot of the best episodes people enjoy are usually the ones that fall in somehow to the overall story.

Main issue with Dax is that the actress wasn't up for handling the character, and you can tell by how the writers eventually give up giving her plots beyond symbiote stuff and the Worf romance. Contrast that with Kira, who got a variety of plots, admittedly some better than others.

It's not until the final season that the writing room really figures out Dax because the change in actress let them stumble into a "Doctor Who regeneration plot."

      I care, frick off.

OP you're pretty much right, though Move Along Home is pure kino if you're on drugs. Being better than TNG season 1 isn't much of an achievement and Dax episodes are generally weak since the actress was more or less given the part purely due to her looks. Keep an eye on Quark, in many ways I find him the most interesting character along with Dukat. I'd say it's more consistent than TNG but it's hard to compare the two since they're so different. Definitely the best Treks though.

thing about dax is, the hosts are common as frick, like 50% of them can host the Trill. The problem with it is that they literally wanted to try to capture the most uncommon (trannies) label in LGBT while still representing the non-trannies who are just gay or bi so they settled

      It's also star trek, anon
I'm not sure but I';d imagine it came up as a point at least once, like how Data being an android freaked people out or how Geordi's magical fricking visor was like 'wow georgi that's the shit you see?# in that one TNG episode

        Anonymous

People shit on Data all the time, almost every episode he meets somebody new, or Dr. Pulawski.

Meanwhile Dax is just running around screwing half of DS9 and everyone thinks it's cute, despite Jadzia herself being hinted as a bit of a social nerd before joining. Which means it's pretty much just Curzon going around using her body.

You also have to understand that Terry Farrell was the eye candy, anon
And that being a host wasn't something you would speak about unless you wanted to
Curzon's personality was a womanizing violent drunk and he was male

Isn't there a whole Trill episode where it's revealed that half or more of the Trill population can host a symbiont but they purposefully lie about this so only the most well-adjusted members of the population get chosen?

Wasn't sure if it was DS9 or just TNG but yeah, they kept that under wraps since the government protect the trills and don't want them to be seen as pokemon or some shit so make it hard to become a host

I want Kira to sit on my face.

Same but with Marissa from TNG

Terry Farrell should have been the eye candy but they gave her the ugliest haircut; it's fricking maddening. Kira had bad hair for one episode, but Dax has a "just frick my shit up cuh" look for six whole seasons.

              Anonymous

TNG has Code of Honor in season 1
that makes it the best season and the best trek

I think they tried to go for the 'fun autismo' girl as opposed to Troi on TNG but it didn't pay off when she kept going on about 'as a woman who's over 150 years old, technically speaking'
Kinda like the writers tried to do the 'haha space chick is a freak so you're a loser'

I honestly think both the writers and actress had no idea. Like they tried to do three things with her: hot eye candy, super smart person, quirky person who drives the plot but she falls flat on all three since she mixes them together

            Anonymous

7/9 was the eye candy addon in Voy and she had some real good character arcs and episodes going on, she ended up becoming one of my favorite characters.
The episode where she and Doctor swaps bodies is hilarious, they mimic eachother very well.

I just dislike Jax, whatever not that big of a deal, I just wish SOMEONE would be wierded out by it in a episode instead of going "how far down does the spots go UwU"

              Anonymous

Well you have to understand, to a lot of people in the Federation, Curzon is legendary. He negotiated the first ever peace treaty between the Klingons and Federation. That alone makes Dax a sort of 'uwu luv you' in the story

And the difference is Jeri Ryan is a fricking brilliant actress. Terry Farrell isn't meh but she's not good enough to play all three roles: autismo but cute, super smart, super fun party girl'

it also doesn't help that she looks like she's about one day out of the fricking academy

Its not just a actress issue.
I honestly don't think Terry did that bad at her, I don't think the character changed much for the better after Jeri came in.

Maybe I'm just very biased, but I was pretty happy when she died. Only for her to come back in a different body *groan*

I think he's acting wooden because that's how the writers/directors want him to act. The character is meant to be zen, a meditative spiritual leader who's enlightened and above petty dramas. But for us as the audience, that's just boring.

Not him but Brooks has a very odd way of acting Sisko where he comes off as a guy putting up a happy face for the crew a lot of the time. If he's listening to someone talking about their personal life, its almost like he's only listening because he wants to be a more effective station commander rather than someone who is actually interested in his co-workers lives. He simply doesn't want to show up to OPS and be blindsided by the chief having some personal thing with Keiko, he wants to know about that shit at least a week before its turned into an actual problem.

I'd even say that there's a theme with several of the main cast acting like they're pretending to be something they're not. Garak and Bashir has a similar thing going for them for example. The difference is that Sisko takes a far more active role in the plot and has more responsibility on the station so he has to actually behave inauthentic more often and in a broader range of circumstances and with more people. I simply see a guy who clearly doesn't want to talk to someone like Rom and doesn't enjoy having to pretend he's doesn't think Rom is insanely annoying and borderline moronic most of the time.

My favorite scene of Brooks' psychotic acting is in the first season episode where some virus or some shit is making everyone on the station form alliances and turn on each other. O'Brien suggests that Kira might try to attack him and he screams "NEVERRRRR! GET ME A PHASER, I'LL KILL HER MYSELF!"

The way he screams "NEVERRRRRRR!" always makes me laugh.

Mate have you actually seen DS9? The show is defined by constant themes of paranoia, distrust, manipulation on just about every level, gray morals, and so on. You actually finished the show and walked away thinking Sisko, the guy who collaborates with someone is effectively the former second in command of the space Gestapo, covers up assassination attempts and uses chemical warfare, is anything other than a guy whose one bad day away from becoming a full blown villain? And to top it all off the guy grows a goatee halfway through the show.

I'm really 50/50 on Emissary, I feel it really suffers from having to have a 2-hour runtime. It has a lot of great scenes, but too much padding inbetween. The entire "You are here" sequence with the Prophets is my favorite from any series though, and what really sold me on Sisko.

Brooks' acting can seem weird, until you watch some interviews with him, and realize he actually is just that crazy IRL and playing himself as captain, which just wraps it back around to being pure kino.

Every season of DS9 is better than the previous one, except season 7, so if you like season 1 you should like the rest even more. There are occasional bad episodes like any other trek and things get a little out of hand by the end, but it's never as bad as Voyager's bad stretches. It took them a while with DS9 to build things up and feel out characters, like Dax, but things started working a lot faster than TNG.
