I love Hunter, but he didn’t do much, exaggerated most of it, and made up the rest. His biggest regret was that people took it all seriously and never “got” it.

Zoomers have known nothing outside of neoliberal policies and highly sanitized corporate entertainment that props it up from infancy. They can't even conceptualize anything actually cool. Everything they think is "cool" is either some moroner Black person garbage for people with 80 IQ or nostalgia borrowed from Late Millenials and Late GenXers

Consider that the people who can coherently remember the pre 9/11, pre-internet world are all well over 30 now.
To those younger, the memory of a world that isn't totally controlled by neoliberalism is about as relevant as the memory of a world before WWII was to boomers.

    However...
outside Jack Sparrow, this is Depp's masterpiece. Del Taco did an outstanding job in this, and it is nothing but what happens when go that deep into dumbshit territory yet somehow survives.

    As the old adage goes-
"Its always the drunk that survives the crash, not the family of four he hit."

    >he didn't catch the satire
This is Hunter's great American novel. He was obsessed with Fitzgerald and Gatsby but nobody dies at the end of F&L, Hunter's tragedy was the death of the 60s hippie ethos.

Only people who glorify drugs are either people who have never taken them or people so helplessly addicted they want to normalize it to feel better.
This movie is neither, this movie is clearly a message from a drug user who wants to warn others not to do it.

      >And that, I think, was the handle - that sense of inevitable victory over the forces of old and evil. Not in any mean or military sense; we didn't need that. Our energy would simply prevail. We had all the momentum; we were riding the crest of a high and beautiful wave. So now, less than five years later, you can go up on a steep hill in Las Vegas and look west, and with the right kind of eyes you can almost see the high-water mark - that place where the wave finally broke and rolled back.

I've not seem the film, but there's a bit in the book when the lawyer is sitting in the bath, chopping up grapefruit into progressively smaller pieces with a massive knife.
I was reading that to my friends one drunken night in an airbnb and we were rolling around with laughter, I could barely get the words out.
Good times, the book had been given to me by a guy who came by the pub I worked in regularly - he came for the cute girls I worked with, but we got into talking about books.
    Thanks for reading my blog

Here's a documentary about Hunter right before they made the F&L movie. Whole thing is great but I timestamped the part where the first two screenwriters they hired come to visit him.
They wanted to make a big CGI tidal wave that washed him back to Vegas from LA and he gives them an absolute savage thrashing.
