the only good performances in Lynch's Dune were by the non-native English speakers
Jurgen Prochnow and Max von Sydow were the only good actors

The new movies might have better structure, and storytelling, but the casting and cinematography is such irredeemable garbage.

      >The new movies might have better structure, and storytelling
if they had either of those things they wouldn't have taken more than twice the time to tell the same story less well.

I mean... They at least told it in a way where relationships and rivalries carried some weight, instead of Chani just showing up for one scene, having some lines, and then being relegated to the background and some inter-spliced make-out scenes for the rest of the movie.
Lynchs Dune really should have been way longer, or split into multiple movies, and it's a shame we'll never see it.

the thing is that Frank Herbert was terrible at writing characters. being "heroes gf" is all the text of Dune justifies Chani being. Lynch was being a good screenwriter by skipping most of the second half of the book because its just Paul getting given stuff then winning. the only other plot point is him having a kid we don't care about who dies, which just repeats his motivation from part 1.

Still, I feel like the movie needed to spend more time (which too be fair, would be hard) building up some relationship for some things to really pay off better to the viewer, and I don't really think the being true to the book should have played a part in it.
For example, when Paul meets Gurney again, we don't really feel the emotions at all, since we had barely been exposed to him. And when he battles Feyd-Rautha in the ending, it really just feels unnecessary because it's not really the culmination of some developed rivalry.

          Lynch chani is book-accurate.

    This is just contrarianism
The 1984 version is overacted, campy and rushed. The plot and the characters have no room to breathe, like Duncan Idaho in that version appears in one scene where they go "OH HELLO DUNCAN IDAHO MY GOOD FRIEND HOW ARE YOU" then he vanishes from the movie until the scene he dies.

I am so heartily sick of comments like this. You think you're going to make fun of yourself and the only thing that happens is that I feel "Fun that I pay channel passes for me and Anon, Städi's salary and all overheads to be able to create a thread like this and this useless dude chooses to mock me". Why can't you just shut up instead? Don't come and defend yourself with "I came here for the letters" because then you're the only one who hasn't noticed that I do other things too.
Having said that - no one will see your letters here in the future. If you can't behave at the party, you can count on not being invited again.

I don't really think it's deep and misunderstood or anything, I just think it's a masterpiece in set and costume design, with a great soundtrack and cinematography as well.

    How to fix DUNC:
    >Lift the soundtrack from the lynch movie and expand on it
    >Lift about half of the set, ship, and costume design from the lynch movie
    >Don't cast Timmy (what's he gonna do?!) and Zendaya
    >Stop using adobe lightroom to colour "correct" everything, and have cinematography more akin to the lynch version

I hear Lynch doesn't even want to talk about it, is it because of some basic shit like not having enough time to tell the story properly or is it about some specific changes he was forced to make?

That Dune has a killer soundtrack, cool characters and cool production design. It's also a bit easier to follow the general plot of the story.

The new Dune...well...it had a bigger budget and more up-to-date special effects.

If you want accuracy, you have the 2000 version. If you want a competent well made movie, you have Dunc. If you want some cool imagery here and there and a dogshit movie, you have the 1984 version. Why people on here are obsessed with the latter is beyond me.

DUNC has the better cinematography and script but DUNE has the better acting and designs.
