I agree and I have a bachelors of science as well as a masters in a fake science
‘Soft sciences’ are hardly ever scientific and are scientific method is poorly suited to nearly all of the work that the fields are involved in - mostly people just use ‘case studies’ (quantified anecdotes of varying validity)

          Anonymous

The scientific method isn't really used anywhere in modern science. Even hard sciences. Like you can't really test a hypothesis about the Big Bang or something, since its a one time event.

            Anonymous

Case studies will still try to disguise themselves as ‘scientific’ by using some quantifiable variables (proxy measures that I myself constructed and defined for the purpose of justifying my conclusion) and then I’ll run a regression to give a good mathematically solid result to my claim
However, the proxies are nonsense and my conclusions are only valid to a simplified version of a couple systems at a particular point in the past, so I’m not very confident in their applicability to the world overall
Nonsense in, nonsense out - disguised by quantifiable and verifiable metrics in the best cases and entirely anecdotal in the worst cases

Case studies are the only medical research I consider valid. If a study is peer reviewed I just assume the researchers got paid to lie by some drug or machine manufacturer.

Seeing public perception shift over the last decade has been hilarious. When I was a kid I didn't even know his TV show was a nationwide thing, I assumed it was local because I grew up in the PNW and almost every field exercise he did was around here. Everyone around here knew someone with one or had a story of their own of him being an abrasive dipshit and when I found out people in other states knew about him I figured the truth was well known too. It was a bit of a shock when he had that guest spot on SG:A and I found that people broadly had an extremely high opinion of him. His character on SG:A was about how everyone who had a run in with him in the 90s described him.

The one that sticks out is I had a teacher who played in a local let's say musical ensemble that was featured on one of the episodes. She said the crew were all great but he was a big fricking homosexual and diva and would hit on her nonstop and threw a tantrum when one of her groupmates had a better comeback than he was prepared for when he was shitting on people on set.

Dune (the book) is a russian nesting doll of allegories. Its science poetry more than science fiction. All the elemets can tied back to metaphors for human nature. Thats why everyone will probably fail at producing a movie version of this book series. Because this sort of literalism that this replusive monkey man demonstrates has plagued our society beyond repair. Villianew is too concerned with aesthetics and Tyson chicken is too concerned with mechanics. Both fail at understanding that Dune is just poetry. Its not supposed to be some grand fricking opera of scientific innovation. Its not trying solve anything other than the human soul. Thats it. Fricking Black folk.

Why do people call Dune hard science-fiction? It is less hard than Jello.

There are significant aspects of Herbert’s imagined future that are fantasy in sci-fi drag. The “Butlerian jihad” is (originally) an arbitrary rationale for not having to extrapolate the overwhelming influence of computing technology. As a result, you have a series set in the unimaginably far future where people have access to less computing power than they did in the 1980’s, let alone now.

It’s the same thing with arms and weapons. He wanted swords instead of guns, so he fudged a rationale.

The political system is another brick of fudge. There’s no rationale given (at least in the first three books) as to why there’s an Emperor who yields actual power over a huge swath of space, when we had already outgrown that politically at the time Herbert was writing.

I’ve been told by those in the know that the planet desert ecology is shaky, too.

It’s space opera fantasy that predates Star Wars. Hell of a story, though. Which is mostly all he was after.

( All this, and I’m not even bringing up the moronic biological aspects of the books, or just the blatantly-magic space cocaine! )

Lol @ thinking the US is the first democracy. Americans are adorable. Historically, feudal societies and Imperial societies are far more stable and long lasting than democracies. You are moronic if you think democracy won't fall yet again like it always does, and that feudal societies won't rise in its ashes, like they always do.

      >There’s no rationale given (at least in the first three books) as to why there’s an Emperor who yields actual power
most of the feudal stuff in Dune is just a front for the CHOAM corporation, the Emperor is the CEO and has over 50% of the shares

that said the emperor essentially had absolute power anyway, he could revoke company directorships and planetary fiefdoms at a whim. he has all the military power as well. the only reason the Laandsrad is even allowed to continue to exist is because they each have atomics and would quickly unite against the emperor if he started openly eating them one by one

Is Paul even still Paul? What about Jessica? They should have shown more that they’re now completely different individuals, post water of life. That level of ancestral memory access should practically erase the original ego, to SOME degree.

Also, apparently the spice (Dune’s equivalent of the force) is female? Outright? What?

      >Also, apparently the spice (Dune’s equivalent of the force) is female?

No, it’s not, and only misguided feminist readers of Dune insist that it is. The spice is more masculine at its depth, than feminine.

This is what Mohiam said to Paul after his test:
      — "We look down so many avenues of the past . . . but only feminine avenues." Her voice took on a note of sadness. "Yet, there's a place where no Truthsayer can see. We are repelled by it, terrorized. It is said a man will come one day and find in the gift of the drug his inward eye. He will look where we cannot — into both feminine and masculine pasts."

The Bene Gesserit are in-truth terrified of masculinity. They dare not go into that half of their ancestral memory. Those that do, inevitably end up becoming Abomination, as Alia did — which is a risk of all pre-borns, as they are unfamiliar with the terror (that protective black void that all Reverend Mothers fearfully avoid) that is masculinity. In the end, Alia got taken over by the ego of her grandfather, the Baron Harkonnen.

It’s not that women *can’t* go into their male ancestral memories, it’s that they’re incapable of surviving it, similar to how (most / non-Atreides) men can’t survive the Water of Life. These are two distinct thresholds entirely.

        >It’s not that women *can’t* go into their male ancestral memories, it’s that they’re incapable of surviving it
At the end of Dune Paul brags to Mohiam that if she looks into the place where she dare not look that she would see him staring out at her. I think this implies that the BG have the capability to reach this place, but maybe not the ability to comprehend it. Alia might be able to see into both because she never had a female identity of her own before given access.

Also I just remembered when Paul first enters the forbidden zone he blows past Jessica's mind and she catches a glimpse of bright lights and is overwhelmed. I think that supports the theory that the barrier is a psychological one more than a physical limitation since she was able to see into it and just couldn't understand it

        https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dune:_Prophecy
All of that is about to be non-canon. The Dune: Prophecy show literally fired the DUNC/DUNC 2 writer because Sweet Baby Inc told them they needed a female lead writer. This lead to Villavue dropping out and being replaced by a female show runner. All stars of the show are women aged 40+. Dune is literally about to be a show for females even moreso than Star Wars.

      > Is Paul even still Paul?

I was left with the impression that the water of life corrupted both Jessica and Paul. I’ve seen other posts about how much viewers loved Jessica in this, but I saw her as vaguely evil after drinking the water of life.

Once Jessica drinks it and becomes the new reverend mother, one of her first plans of action is to target “weaker” Fremen and essentially indoctrinate them into believing Paul is the Mahdi. She becomes so obsessed with pushing the prophecy onto the Fremen and is far less concerned with the well-being of her son.

Before Paul drinks it, he does not see himself as the Mahdi at all. After drinking it, he believes he is and announces it firmly to the Fremen. He seems to write off Chani after this who is the only Fremen who will not bow to him. His character shifts drastically from a sincere, heroic descendant of Atreides to an emboldened, arguably entitled man clambering for power. This marks the beginning of a new kind of war, with atom bombs and one where Paul is defiant of any perceived opposition of his personal prophecy.

I could be wrong, but I’ve deduced that the water of life leads them to act only for power and less from their hearts. Slaves to future by way of the past.

      >science itself isn’t true
It absolutely is, in-theory at least. There is a process to literally everything. When someone asks “What’s the science behind the erection?”, you will be met with an explanation on the biological processes of the penis; ie blood flow, sponginess, etc.

Science is a process used to understand processes. Science is about as pure as repeatability itself—with varying nuance in-between (not everything repeatable reproduces the same result).

That being said, science has become a revoltingly politicized religion, and peer review (peer pressure) is slowly destroying it and its credibility. Empiricism is being dropped in favour of feelings.

Neil is also an overly safe physicist, which is stifling. True science is irresponsible science. Many of the greatest scientists were downright mad.

This one israelite (doesn’t matter if you hate israelites or not when he’s still 100% correct) says it all:

No. There are things that aren't science, they are art or subjective views.

Gender for humans being a spectrum, is an opinion. There is no repeatable, testable experiment which will prove it isn't a binary.

Science and art are inseparable. The words for artifice, artificial, etc, come from art. Even hideous infrastructure is full of art.
                >Gender for humans being a spectrum, is an opinion
Yes, because it’s semantic bollocks. To the average bloke on the side of the road, sex and gender are indistinguishable meanings. Synonyms. “Um ackchyually I think you mean sex not gender”. These people are a danger. They confuse identity with reality.

Science says sex and gender are different so they’re different, chud.

                gender isn't a thing

                Exactly. It’s just sex.

In 1954, marxist-psychologist "sexologist" Jon Money divorced the synonyms of sex and gender to construct his Gender Theory, which was later disproved by his own monstrous experiment on the Reimer Twins when his academic fraud was exposed. Sex and gender ARE synonymous, gender was just the word you'd put on a scantron so the kids wouldn't have a giggle about the word "sex" before a test.
