Episode 1 & 2 discussion

Now that the series has officially been released, what's your verdict?

Personally, I feel like it's a downgrade. Most of the jokes feel like they came out half-baked. I understand why they dropped Gandhi and Toot, but the rest of the cast don't mesh well. It feels as though the writers all know the fans want Gandhi, but they can't bring him back, so to compensate for the loss, they split Gandhi's personality across the cast, which ruins the others characters

The moment it was leaked that Gandhi was staying frozen, we should've taken a page out of the street-shitters' book and starved ourselves to death in front of their door in a hunger strike.

The only one I feel has a character that stand out is Columbus
Confucius feels like a diet Gandhi
Harriet and the troony have interchangeable personalities
Abe can't stand on his own
Joan's character is butchered. She went from a goth chick to... I have no idea how to describe her current character
As for JFK.... Well, he's hard to frick up. He's a moronic playboy. His character is simple but effective

      >Joan's character is butchered. She went from a goth chick to... I have no idea how to describe her current character

Tf are you talking about? Joan has always been like this and her being Goth was only surface level

Hell I'd argue that the new season has actually made her MORE Goth than ever before considering she's shown interest in actual Goth things like Seances and calling for Bloody Mary

She’s a little too peppy now in my opinion. She was never extremely cynical and they very rarely leaned into the goth aspect of her character in the original show but she still had a general blasé attitude, now she feels a lot more animated. Which isn’t a bad thing per se but I just have to see more of it

I just finished episode two (I skipped one because I saw the leak and I'm assuming they didn't change much?) and I can't believe anons were saying this was good, if anything its a downgrade from the leak/episode 1. Harriet, Frida, Confucius, and Topher are just too much. We went from having 5 main characters in the original series to 8 main characters in the reboot, it just doesn't work and also why I think episode one was probably better, the new characters were relegated to bit parts while the original cast was in focus.

      >The only one I feel has a character that stand out is Columbus
He's the most distinct but he doesn't really work either. The issue here is that the historical figures in the original series (even supporting characters like George Washington Carver and Van Gogh) were chosen because they were recognizable enough to the general population that you could either subvert the popular perception of them or play it for laughs. The new characters were chosen for diversity, which I'm not entirely against, but they're not recognizable enough and/or not being played with enough.

Like, Topher is just kind of evil. Why? What does that have to do with Columbus? It would've been more fitting to caricaturize, making him a character that always claims things as his own or to subvert by making him ab insufferably culturally conscious geek.

I'm guessing because he was black and blind yet the show portrayed him as a moron. I'm only implying based from the show's direction

          Why did they dropped gandhi?

Indians didn't like how Clone High portrayed an icon of peace as a mentally ill brainlit, so they protested in front of MTV by doing a hunger strike. It got so bad, to the point where executives were locked inside due to the density of the protesters.
I understand where they were coming from, and I can't say I blame them for overreacting. The show was taking heavy jabs at Gandhi, both as a character and the real guy. But Gandhi was still fricking hilarious and my favorite character. Nu Clone High can't stand without him

    >Continuing a show 20 years later
That alone doomed it to fail. If too much time goes by, a sequel ends up being far too removed from the original and you end up with the same characters trying to exist in two drastically different eras. The original Clone High wouldn't have existed in any capacity in 2023 so it was naive to expect a sequel would do the same. Besides, they removed the best character. Some things should just be appreciated and left alone instead of being milked for nostalgia.

It feels like every time it happens, the writers use it as an excuse to have the characters react to current events/issues. It's getting really old.

        >Zim
Fricking really? The movie completely botched the tone of the original series, and Jhonen admitted it was deliberate. Gaz actually cares about Dib, and Membrane isn't neglectful. They're a somewhat dysfunctional, but happy family now. Dib is supposed to be from a broken home, but Jhonen thinks that's too dark, but, like, that's what gives him his character. Fricking hell.

Every scene felt off, the new writers are missing the plot. Small example, making the shadowy government figures diverse with all the colors of the rainbow. I'm not b***hing because of woke, I'm b***hing because it misses the point of them being nearly identical Glow in the Dark types. Not only are they not threatening, I don't think the new female writers even understand what they are parodying. Go ahead and extend this example to the entire genre/parody/genx period they don't seem to understand even exists.

Different department, but also, holy shit do they have 0 idea of what they're doing. Instead of collecting data from surveys on places like Roll20 and cons and maybe outside player groups, they instead use their in-house groups as testing. Like, the people who built the mechanics, and other orbiters. It's practically incest, which is why the design decisions are completely fricking moronic and the ONLY way stuff from the outside comes in is if there's a massive Internet outcry.

Is that why a lot of the classes have been untouched in their primitive state since release?
              Monks have no utilities
Sorcerers have been underpowered since release
Warlocks keep getting shafted into oblivion
And to top it all off, the Wizard keeps getting more buffs and better version of other spellcasters abilties. On a later level, they gain more spell slots on short rests and get access to better versions of sorcery points
Why does the Warlock still only have 4 spell slots. No, he has 3 because rarely campaigns reach level 20. His level 20 ability is god awful. His level 1 spells are so bad that the players gaslit themselves into thinking Hex is the best spell. Out of all of their subclasses, only 4 of them are good. The latest Undead subclass has a really cool ability that synergized with his One Trick Pony gimmick then WotC nerfed because players were having fun

Pretty much, yeah. I don't think anybody really PLAYS monks in the playtesting department, and that they're a holdover from the old days, like the paladin. And I agree with you. But unfortunately, I was just a fluff writer. Alas.

So USA becomes a monopoly which relies on extensive labor and crippling other countries. How does this benefit the little people/prevent a capitalist dystopia?

Resource extraction is done externally. All manufacturing and trading source becomes domestic, which creates a LOT of new jobs because the "race to the bottom" is a non-factor now, which is the big appeal of modern globalist free-trade capitalism. Also you won't have immigrants coming in because imperialism.

No idea. The ranger was always another one of those old sacred cow classes. And I mean let's be honest, the ranger is barely functional as it is. Like I said, I wasn't part of that. I did about 80% fluff and about 20% mechanics.

How what? Mercantilism is "nationalism for the domestic market" where the nation will prioritize its own economy at the expense of others, and does everything as domestic as possible, while crippling the domestic production of other countries. So under mercantilism, the USA would invade Saudi Arabia, put in a bunch of white people in charge and working the oil fields, and then sell that oil to others, including crippling the oil production of other countries.

What happened with Gary? Did the show end with season 2 or was it canceled?

A couple of the jokes made me laugh, but I do agree that it hasn't matched the quality of the first season yet. The animation seems much more slow to me. It's not nearly as snappy as it was in the old season and it's making the timing of the jokes worse. At the very least, I still love Abe, JFK and Joan. Even after all these years they do seem to be the same characters. The only time someone acted wildly OOC to me was Abe's freakout on notTiktok. I'm cautiously optimistic as I did like episode two more than episode one and hopefully the future episodes will carry the momentum forward.

On a side note, I'm so fricking happy they didn't drop the entire season in one batch. I hope we can get some actual discussion going.

voices sound terrible and aged, no based gandhi, cleo voice actor is different, the cringe zoomer millenial inclusivity stuff is so overdone in modern media, joan is missing her pointed head. it's even worse than i could imagine.

Max is fricking terrible. The continue watching list is all fricked, if I want to watch Sopranos one day I have to write down where I was since Max goes right back to the pilot episode.
Too busy making their shitty "feel good" woke bs ads I guess. 🙂

It would never be as good as the original but it made laugh many times, and thats good enough for me.

Joan actually got the worse character assassination out of everyone. Joan doesn't have any fo the dryness or bite she had in the original. This is not the same Joan that tazed Gandhi and kicked JFK in episode one.
Cleo grtting shafted so far is disappointing. I think need to give her something new to do other than love triangle stuff.
Harriet still doesn't have a personality yet. It's very noticeable because episode one of the original did such a good job of introducing the cast.
Otherwise, I actually like the new cast. Topher and Confucius are the strongest new characters easily. I think they did a good job at making Confucius different enough from Gandhi.
Season 1 is still better, But season 2 is still a good comedy so far.

Gandhi is the literal soul of the show. Give me a break.
