90% of what is wrong with the prequels falls on him casting the wrong actor for Anakin both times. It should've been someone age-appropriate who had nuclear chemistry with Hershlag, instead he cast the worst child actor ever, and then a creepy weirdo

People shit on Hayden too much, Lucas wanted a melodramatic James Dean like actor, and Hayden looked and played the part. Portman deserves more of the blame for acting like a hostage instead of a girl in love in episode 2, and Lucas as well for being an autist and not recognizing Portman's clear discomfort and trying to address it by changing the script or the costumes or something.

Yep, casting Christensen was the biggest mistake. Not even sure he's a bad actor, but he didn't have the experience/range or "charisma" to be the chosen jedi who becomes le dark sith lord. The way Anakin was written -- his descent into sithdom -- and the dialogue weren't nearly ideal either, so whoever was cast would have a difficult time anyway, but casting him was a big mistake.
Obi-wan and the emperor were cast very well of course, in contrast.

I did a shitty one that relied almost entirely on the lore from the OG movies, not sure where I have it saved tho. In essence it's similar to OP's, except it starts with Anakin as like a 17-20 year old freedom fighter on Tatooine who is joined by Jedi knight Obi-Wan on a mission. Hijinks, friends are made, Anakin is found to be very force sensitive by Obi-Wan. Probably pretty similar to many others I'd guess.
The biggest problem really is just child Anakin completely fricking up the pacing and never allowing us to see an actual heroic Anakin and true bro moments with Obi-Wan. Also, while Anakin would be prone to anger he wouldn't be a weird angsty gay, ever. He would actually seem intimidating enough to eventually be Vader

they should have played it exactly as it went, but the casting should have stayed true to the original set of films. Spunky young Anakin all the way to vader should have been played by an elderly Black.

While I was high on shrooms about 15 years ago my soul and mind unyoked from my body and I experienced a different dimension/reality, only as witness, linked to another body, one of the things I remember was being part of a group of friends watching a dvd of ep.1. There were several differences, the entire look of the film felt older, people dressed slightly different and just in the casting: Obi Wan was not played by Mcgregor but by some other guy I've never recognized, I don't think the queen was Portman either and only Neeson was in the same role, Jar Jar was there but he wasn't computer generated, the final lightsaber duel was not in a gigantic setting with the plasma but in multiple palace rooms. The most significant change I recall was that Anakin was an older teenager character played by an older actor compared to Loyd, like 16-18. The pod race was in the film but again it felt less CGI, felt more like a mad max/return of the Jedi sequence. In the final space battle he is in the ship with Padme as gunner, before they blow up the big enemy ship there is a bit of a romance thing between them, I vividly recall that they get stranded and the ship breaks down, by this time Qui Gon has been killed, Anakin focuses and listens to Qui Gon's voice telling him to trust in the force or something, just like ep.4, then Anakin tells Padme he won't let her die in there and he basically awakens the ship using the force (he does something similar in the pod race). There is no infiltration to the palace to arrest the Chinese guys, just a droid battle, lightsaber duel and Anakin and Padme. Some years after the experience I saw a film that helped me identify the exact person who played Anakin, River Phoenix.

why haven't they made a character like this since episode one? my favorite part is when he came back to life, pissed and moaned about Dathomir and his brother, fell out with Sheev; then jobbed all over the galaxy for 20 more years and was mercy killed by Old Ben Kenobi right outside the Lars family homestead.

Hayden was excellent as Anakin in ROTS, after rewatching the prequels last weekend I think George really learned from his mistakes in AOTC (besides that “then love has blinded you” cringe part).
In fact AOTC is pretty unremarkable besides Anakin on Tatooine and the Geonosis battle, I feel like you could just cut out the entire assassination subplot and rewrite it to be better with more character development for Count Dooku.

Just having Obi wan go to tattooine would’ve helped some, I think.

Interacts with anakin, does something besides waiting in the car.

Maybe padme has a crush on him but he’s disinterested cuz she’s too young and he’s a strict jedigay anyway. Anakin is a little jealous. Sets up a nice triangle when they’re grown up. Maybe they bicker but also end up helping each other in some way.

And maybe Qui gon is impressed with Anakins instinctive nature and talent which irks Obi wan. Kind of like a Norman/Peter/Harry dynamic from Spider-Man.

  19. 3 weeks ago

    I agree.
Prequels had a lot of problems, and one was that Anakin switched actors between I and II. It meant we had to get to know him all over again. I was basically a wasted movie. The trilogy should have started with the beginning of the Clone Wars. II becomes I, and III is split into II and III. Same actor as Anakin with a more gradual fall.

This was literally all I could think about while watching the 25th anniversary release in the theater. Replace Qui Gon with an equally middle aged wise but jaded obi wan and let anakin be a young but already established jedi knight. You could even have similar story beats after that whatever.

the point is that Anakin would've spent years training so he's actually doing missions in the 2nd movie.

The Jedi process starts with young kids and they spend years training at the temple doing combat and force training. Once they reach Anakin's age, then they go off doing dangerous missions. It wouldn't be realistic to have him in late teens then all of a sudden he's going with Obi Wan when he hasn't had time to practice. Of course they throw away this logic in the sequels with Rey having no training and beating trained Jedi in battle.

I disagree, we need to see Anakin's traumatic childhood to understand how he became Darth Vader, however he should have had a smaller role in Episode I.

Episode I should have been about a bunch of adults deciding what to do with Anakin, he is a child, remarkable and force sensitive, but still a child. At the same time we see Palpatine's intrigue trying to gain power and recognizing Anakin's immeasurable power with the force and also his instability, seeing a massive opportunity in this.

Episode I follows Darth Maul's antics, Palpatine is actually trying to get rid of Darth Maul so he can take Anakin under his wing as an apprentice in his stead. Darth Maul is not just a thug with a light saber, he coaxes the separatists into rebellion, taking advantage of the Republic's lethargy in dealing with problems like the massive crime syndicates and slavery. Darth Maul is defeated, but of course this only serves the Emperor

Episode II, Anakin is now a teen, now comes the love story with Padme with the backdrop of rebellion springing up against the Republic, he is forbidden from seeing her but goes AWOL and asks for her help getting him to Tatooine to save his mother only to discover she is dead. His fit of rage is not against sand people but slave owners, we see how his righteous anger is leading him to the dark side of the force.

Eventually he sees he may have gone too far in a few places and agrees to return to the jedi council and leave padme.

Episode III, uh oh, he got Padme pregnant, now his visions of her murderer are getting stronger, yet he is the prisoner of the jedi council, all the time the separatists grow more powerful due to Palpatine's intrigues, it is apparent the Republic is fighting a losing war. Palpatine uses their desperation to allow him to use his clone armies. Palpatine then approaches Anakin to give him an alternative to serving the futile Jedi. Palpatine convinces them to let Anakin serve them in a military capacity and he achieves great victories, but it is all orchestrated by Palpatine.

Anakin then has leeway to search for a way to save Padme, convinced it is the dark side of the force he begins training. Soon he is powerful enough to take on the Jedi, along with order 66, Anakin goes nuts on the Jedi, Padme tries to escape with Obi Wan, Anakin discovers this an force chokes her in rage then fights Obi Wan, who defeats Anakin, leave all that in lol
