There was some unironically cool stuff in there too. The Razac being super predators that chased humans out of their original home, the soldiers that had their ability to feel pain or disobey orders, even the shades were all cool stuff that was new to me when I read it. Also Jill Valentine was hot as frick

        Checked
I remember a plot thread I liked from book 2 onward was shell-shocked king Orrin of Surda, who went from being a lovable naive scientist to a grizzled veteran who gradually stops caring about anything except the friends he lost and his birthright, only to see it stolen by a sassy black girl in the end. By the end of book 4, he ends up being so jaded and disgusted by everyone around him that you can't help but sympathize.

I remember the author tried to portray Orrin in a negative light by sidelining him, overruling his decisions and making him into a drunkard, but it didn't really work and kind of has the opposite effect, everyone else just look like they're being buttholes to him for no reason.

The parents published the book but they were a tiny company and Paolini had to go on a self funded """book tour""" that only paid off when some random girl took a liking to the book and brought it to her bigshot children author uncle's attention

I love the absolute seethe that Eragon caused.
All these old losers whose books never succeeded or were butthurt that a young guy wrote a book.

        >what if...star wars, but written by a 5 year old...and dragons

Why did the author just steal Aragorn's name from LOTR?

i read the first book and also watched the movie when it came out, shit was really bad and it was marketed as "a young person wrote it" and kids read it because they wanted to be inspired to write their own book too. it sucks so bad. its like impressive for a kid but its by no means any good.

theres a scene where the dragon accidentally singes the main charector with fire breath.

And the maincharector complains. and the dragon literally says "imagine if everytime you moved your elbow to a certain angle you shot fire, how would that make you feel?"

and the main charector literally apologizes. its a fricking mess.

See? Just a bunch of losers who have never accomplished anything seething over the fact that a younger person made a successful book series.

Arya tells Eragon that if he still loves her in a few decades time she'll hook up with him. Then Eragon leaves Alagaesia forever while she remains behind to be queen of the elves.

FYI Christopher Tortellini was not 15 when he wrote his shitty Star Wars/LotR fan fiction, he was 15 when he "imagined" it. He actually wrote it between the ages of 18 and 19. Then unfortunately for mankind his wealthy and doting parents self-published their autistic spawn's literary abortion instead of leaving it to languish on fanfiction.net where it rightfully belongs. Then they went on a book tour, lying to everyone about how old the author was when he wrote it and hyping it as the work of a "prodigy" until it was picked up by a mainstream publisher and became a bestseller.

Since they were editors they probably wrote most of the book themselves. 18 year olds don't know frick all about the world and couldn't write anything as good as Eragon. Not saying its good but you can tell it was heavily edited and revised, probably by his parents.

I didn't say it was good writing, I just said that a 15 or 18 year old or whatever generally isn't a good enough writer to make something like that. If he started pumping out other shit after Eragon then you could say that he is a budding artist learning his craft but that wasn't the case just like what

I disagree you have so many fantasy works to pull ideas from, its basically just picking and choosing which ideas you want to incorporate. I bet If you gave yourself a whole day to sit and daydream you could come up with something equally as compelling, or even more so, than Eragon. Its the equivalent of writing some capeshit. Tolkien and Lewis are special because they actually explore ideas and created a mythos. Everything that came after it just mimicked what they did.
Eragon is nothing more than capeshit on paper and that's how 90% of fantasy is.

Oh and for his part Christopher Tortellini thinks that he writes on par with the Nobel prize winning author Seamus Heaney and Tolkien "at his best" (because naturally regular Tolkien isn't good enough). See for yourself:

        >The branch Roran had added to the fire burst asunder with a muted pop as the coals underneath heated the gnarled length of wood to the point where a small cache of water or sap that had somehow evaded the rays of the sun for untold decades exploded into steam.

Tolkien did not write purple prose you subliterate moron. You'd know that if you'd read any Tolkien.

He’s still got a point imo, writing an entire book is outside the scope of an 18 year old. The fact he didn’t write anything other than that franchise until he was much older supports what he’s saying. He only recently wrote another book, in his 30s.

            >He only recently wrote another book, in his 30s.

He finished the fourth book of his trilogy in his 30's. He showed no progress from book 1 to 4. He's probably 40 now.

                >The branch Roran had added to the fire burst asunder with a muted pop as the coals underneath heated the gnarled length of wood to the point where a small cache of water or sap that had somehow evaded the rays of the sun for untold decades exploded into steam.

I never argued once that Tolkien's writing is as bad as Paolini's. My original comment was that Tolkien wrote flowery prose, and so every fantasy author does the same thing because they figure it's what Tolkien did so they have to do it too or else their work won't be taken seriously. But here's something from Tolkien's work for comparison.

                >And still Meriadoc stood there blinking through his tears, and no one spoke to him, indeed none seemed to heed him... And behold! there lay his weapon, but the blade was smoking like a dry branch that has been thrust in a fire; and as he watched, it writhed and withered and was consumed. So passed the sword of the Barrow-Downs, work of Westernesse. But glad would he have been to know its fate who wrought it slowly long ago in the North-Kingdom when the Dunedain were young, and chief among their foes was the dread realm of Angmar and its sorcerer king. No other blade, not though mightier hands had wielded it, would have dealt that foe a wound so bitter, cleaving the undead flesh, breaking the spell that knit his unseen sinews to his will.

Not flowery. Stilted actually, but this was being written a 100 years ago by a man who wrote academic treatises on linguistics for his day job.

I think so many shitty writers have copied his writing style (and basically everything he created) that people automatically dislike him without realizing that he really revolutionized literature and everything that came after him were just copying his ass.

Tolkien's prose is not purple. Tortellini trawled through thesauruses for words to throw into his writing to make it "better". Do you know what "thews" are? Of course you don't, no one does. Tortellini used that word though. Tolkien didn't.

Hey guys tell me if I'm describing Star Wars or Eragon here:

At the start of the story a princess leading a rebellion against an evil empire is being pursued by the evil emperor's right hand man. She's in possesion of an object of great importance which was stolen from the empire. Before she is captured she attempts to secret the item away to a hermit who once belonged to an ancient order of warriors with mystical powers. However the item inadvertently comes into the possession of a boy of foggy origins living with his uncle on a remote farm. The evil emperor's minions track the item to the farm and destroy it, killing the boy's relatives. But the boy escapes with the old hermit who gives him a sword he claims belonged to the boy's father. As they travel together the hermit trains the boy in the ways of the ancient order of warriors. Then the hermit dies protecting the boy, the boy rescues the princess from the start of the story with the help of a dashing rogue, and the boy, rogue, and princess journey together to the rebellion's secret headquarters which has come under attack by the evil empire. At the story's climax the boy saves the day with the timely help of his friends. Afterwards he has a vision of a powerful master of the ancient order of warriors who can finish his training. He seeks the master out and trains with him, growing very powerful. But before his training is finished the boy has premonitions that his friends are in danger. He decides he must go to help them despite his master warning him not to. The boy promises that he will return and leaves. He finds his friends just in time as they are threatened by the evil emperor's right hand man. In the ensuing fight the evil emperor's right hand man reveals that he and the boy are related. The boy is shocked and ultimately defeated, but not killed.

Maybe rottentomatoes can help clear this up:

      >Critics Consensus: Written by a teenager (and it shows), Eragon presents nothing new to the "hero's journey" story archetype. In movie terms, this movie looks and sounds like Lord of the Rings and plays out like a bad Star Wars rip-off. The movie spins the tale of a peasant boy who is suddenly entrusted with a dragon and must, with the help of a mentor, train, grow strong, and defeat an evil emperor. The way the critics picture it, the makers of Eragon should soon be expecting an annoyed phone call from George Lucas.

        >It was just a one line said by the elf dragon rider when Eragon asked him.

Frick off, there's a whole scene with the Elf princess ridiculing a Dwarf priest about his imaginary gods. Then she tells Eragon that his gods don't exist either which he immediately accepts because the Elves are perfect and right about everything.

He didn't say they can't though, iirc the guy just said they haven't seen any evidence of a creator god but they are open minded. They have seen evidence of spirits though, so that's how they know those exist. How is this so difficult to comprehend for theists?

          >but they are open minded

No, they're not. The princess uses her superior atheist intellect to effortlessly make a fool of the Dwarven priest. Tortellini got a lot of flack from his fans for that so in the third book Eragon considers taking a more agnostic outlook. They also objected to how preachy he was about veganism so I think Eragon eats meat out of necessity in the third book too.

The books' stance on atheism is so fricking inconsistent. Everything starting from Book 2 is just a massive elfwank, and elves are clearly atheists, and openly consider anyone who isn't also an atheist as "too stupid" to understand the world. But then in Book 3 (I think), an actual God of the dwarves straight up appears.

The way it was written I think that was supposed to be a tulpa. Like a physical manifestation of the Dwarves collective belief in their god, manifested through the priest.

    >For example, in the first book, Eragon threatens to torture a guard to death, then gets pissy at Murtagh for killing a man who tried to sell them into slavery, then accuses Murtagh of empathy issues, because he killed someone who attacked them maliciously, compared to threatening someone for doing his job. Fast forward to Brisingr when Eragon kills a solider who’s begging for his life—an unarmed solider, I should add—because it would be “dangerous” to let him live, because the solider would go tell someone who could tell the king where Eragon and Arya are. Never mind the fact that they’re in the middle of nowhere, headed back for the Varden, whose location the king already knows, and would surely have reached their destination long before the solider made it back to civilization to tell anyone anything. That, and the fact that it’s established in Eragon that it’s possible to remove information from someone’s mind when Ajihad tries to tell Murtagh why he has to keep him prisoner.

    >Granted, that’s mind rape, and I do mean rape, but since in Paolini Land anything done by Eragon is automatically considered morally right, the scene becomes even more jarring. And the mind rape is another problem I have with the series. The good guys say over and over again that it’s wrong, and then they do it all the time.

            >I have actually started reading Brisingr in Japanese because the English version is too much for me. Certainly, not the best book to practice with, and I need a Kanji dictionary to get through it, but at the very least, the Japanese version tends to cut out half the useless descriptions. That’s probably because Japanese has about one-fourth the amount of words English does, so most of what Paolini wrote is completely impossible to say in Japanese, for which I’m grateful.

            >Take this, for example, from pg. 3 of Brisingr.

            >「オエッ!」ローランが小声でうめいた。「気色悪い。反吐が出るぜ。あの狂信者どもめ、人食い人種だったのか」

            >Which roughly means:

            >“Hee!” Roran groaned quietly. “Disgusting. I’m going to vomit. Those religious fanatics are cannibalistic?!”

            >Compared to the English version:

            >“Gar!” said Roran in an undertone. “You failed to mention that those errant flesh-mongers, those gore-bellied, boggle-minded idiot worshipers were cannibals.”

    >I don’t know why Eragon and the Varden are considered the heroes, because they never do anything heroic. I mean, Eragon goes into battle and takes pleasure in the soldiers he kills. And I don’t know why Galbatorix and the Emipre are evil, because he’s never really shown to be evil. Why is he evil? Well, he taxes people. And that’s about it. Sure, he destroyed the Dragon Riders, but why were they good? Because they just were. The world is based around everything Eragon does being automatically good and everyone who disagrees with him or who works for the Empire being automatically bad.

    >The Empire’s stability is only threatened by the Varden, a terrorist group, but Galbatorix is still evil for trying to protect his lands and going to war with them. There are some things here and there to show his evilness, but they come across as more “See! He truly is evil! We must destroy him!” than as anything having to do with character development.

    >Paolini has a very black and white world, and that’s honestly why there is little to no character development on either side. It’s also probably why Murtagh’s the most interesting character, because he’s kind of gray. He doesn’t like the king, but he sees that the system works, so he doesn’t like the Varden for threatening it.

The point is that stormtroopers are just NPC-tier cannon fodder. You don't even see their faces on account of the helmet
The soldiers in the Inheritance series however are given distinct personalities and faces and Eragon can even read their minds, sensing their terror. So it's half assed that Paolini writes that in, as if wanting his protag to confront his own actions and what it means to take a life, only for him to get over it in a few pages and go right back to mowing them down

No, Tolkien's are. Tortellini's are just straight up copied from Tolkien's. And I'm still waiting for you to pull these words up out of the dictionary. You said they were in the dictionary, ergo Tortellini couldn't have stolen them.

I hated how overpowered the magic was in the books. Like it was stated in like second book that Eragon can easily kill whole army with couple words by blocking veins in their brains and the only thing that could stop him from doing that was another mage.

      Anonymous

Not just stated, the madman actually did it. But he could only do it because Oromis taught him how. Every mage could theoretically do it, but they would have to know exactly how.

I don't hate that idea. It's pretty unique and it makes sense with how the magic system works.
It makes dragon riders OP, but that's the whole point. They're supposed to be OP. And it keeps the dragon from overshadowing the rider.

so speaking of the fat piece of shit get this, back in december 2021 he announced he'd read the prologue and a chapter from Doors of Stone if his charity hit 300,000 bucks. The Charity hit over 1.2 million bucks so they literally exceeded that by almost a million fricking dollars. So he does actually read the prologue on a stream(of which about a page is devoted to describing a tavern in the middle of the night and that's about the only notable thing in the entire fricking prologue), but not the chapter. Rumors come and go about when he'd actually get around to it but it was supposed to be about February at the latest. 11 months later and it still hasn't happened and he hasn't even said anything about it as explanation, update, or apology.

So the obvious takeaway from this, I mean besides that he's a lying sack of shit who exploits his fans for money, is that chapter 1 probably isn't even fricking done yet

That'd be Trianna. >suddenly there's a scene of Saphira getting dicked down
    >Eragon's mind link makes him feel everything that happens
Kind of weird, but based at the same time

        Don't bother.
1/3rd of the book is literally Eragon training with some autistic elf guy and his equally autistic gold dragon.
Looking back, it's got more holes than swiss cheese. Will be an honest to god trainwreck if this tv series ever gets made.

There’s some downright peculiar parts in the books.
Like Eragon being a Luke stand in while his mother is a Mara Jade stand in

    >Eragon stood with Arya as they watched the glittering dragons ascend into the heavens, spiraling around each other with flames streaming from their mouths. It was an awe-inspiring sight: savage and beautiful, and frightening. Eragon realized he was watching an ancient and elemental ritual, one that was part of the very fabric of nature itself and without which the land would wither and die.
    >His connection with Saphira grew tenuous as the distance between them increased, but he could still sense the heat of her passion, which darkened the edges of her vision and blotted out all thoughts save those driven by the instinctual need that all creatures, even the elves, are subject to.
    >The dragons shrank until at last they were no more than a pair of sparkling stars orbiting each other in the immensity of the sky. As far away as they were, Eragon still received a few flashes of thoughts and feelings from Saphira, and though he had experienced many such moments with the Eldunarí when they had shared their memories with him, his cheeks grew hot, as did the tips of his ears, and he found himself unable to look directly at Arya.
    >She too seemed affected by the dragons’ emotions, although differently than he; she stared after Saphira and Fírnen with a faint smile, and her eyes shone brighter than usual, as if the sight of the two dragons filled her with pride and happiness.
    >Eragon let out a sigh, and then squatted and began to draw in the dirt with a stalk of grass.
    >“Well, that didn’t take long,” he said.
    >“No,” said Arya.
    >They remained that way for a number of minutes: she standing, he squatting, and all silence around them, save for the sound of the lonely wind.
    Eragon is canonically autistic

Fricking state of Eragon, what a fricking loser

He tried to get some elf pussy but he got turned down because he's "literally a child in elf years".
I find it hard to believe that elves aren't into /ss/. Just blows my fricking mind, honestly.

        >When your 3 year old dragon, believed to be the last of her kind, gets laid before you
We don't know that for sure. During the big elvish ceremony in book (or was it book ?) where Eragon gets turned into a half-elf or something, he remembers dancing with a young female elf and remembers her scent and "the taste of her tongue" or whatever, so he might have gotten lucky there.

I remember that. The whole thing is written as a fever dream where anything can happen. It's also one of the very few moments in the books where Saphira leaves him the frick alone, and considering she constantly wiener-blocks him, he might have gotten laid.

This make me so mad. Eragon, you dumb frick, how can you not make a move in such situation? No wonder Arya left him.

Holy frick Paolini is autistic as shit even his own self insert couldn't get pussy.
Also I forget these characters, are Arya and Saphira dragons? Is he jealous he wasn't going to get dragon pussy or something?

Arya is the elf chick, Saphira is Eragons dragon. Fírnen is Aryas dragon.
Their dragons fricked but they didn't.

Saphira is Eragon's dragon. Arya is the elf princess that Eragon simps for throughout the whole story

          >Eragon has been lusting after this hot elf chick for 4 books
          >Eragon's dragon Saphira immediately hooks up with Arya's dragon Firnen five seconds after they meet for the first time
          >Eragon and Arya have a mind link to all of this
          >Eragon has had a long time learning to control the mind link and Arya hasn't
          >Eragon can't look her in the face and starts drawing patterns in the dirt

hahahaha holy frick that is so pathetic. He's such a bitter virgin that he wouldn't even let his main character get laid before he does. His character is hanging out with a princess, riding dragons, and killing people but he's still a beta who can't get coochie.
That is the saddest self insert I have ever seen. I wouldn't be surprised if he is still a virgin despite being 39 and rich as frick.

I'll never forgive the movie for making the Ra'zac into generic mooks made of maggots summoned by Durza.
They were legit creepy and cool in the books.

Read the first book when I was 9 and then the next two immediately after. When I was 14 the 4th book came out and I read it but me and my friends thought it was cringe even then.
    >Kills the big bad with the power of feelings and friendship
I enjoyed Roran’s boat journey and the sword building side quest in book 3. Pretty depressing that this hack is probably loaded from royalties and doesn’t even face any criticism since most of his “fans” read this shit as schoolchildren and forgot about it or dismiss it as innocent slop
