Well Michael isn't really a saint or something but at least he tried to emulate what his father did, and Vito was very much a loving husband and father.
Michael is driven to almost insanity because the family values that were basically taken for granted just a generation before weren't there anymore. His wife is judgemental on him, and kills their unborn child just to prove her disapproval of his husband.
The simple fabric of basic reality that would have made morally legitimate most of Michael's actions, to protect and bring on the family in a hostile environment, is vanished.
This drives Michael insane and brings him to assassinate his own brother, marking the death in himself of the "family" ideal that sustained him.

        >because the family values that were basically taken for granted just a generation before weren't there anymore.
...the Godfather is pretty consistent on Italian Women Good, Western Women Bad, it got really obvious in Godfather III where Vincent adore Mary but the Kay look alike who behaved like trash was dumped like trash. Of note is that the Italian women were shown cooking at some point, while Kay was shown cooking NEVER, what does she do for Michael other than spend his money?

          >Wrong. Michael is clearly a very loving father. Proven in 3
3 takes place a large gap after 2 and Michael is old. I can't count the number of people who are arseholes and then become all nice and paly to their kids when deaths door starts approaching. Furthermore his son fricking hated him, so what are you smoking? His daughter was a moron
BUT I will give you this, it was nice to see Michael and Kay chat and be on amicable terms. That's the real thing about their relationship, there is nuance to it, but you incels can't take that and have to resort to women being evil harpies every time.
And yes, I am mad, because these are my favourite films and oh how nice it would be to have a mature discussion about it on the Cinemaphile board. But nah

I was surprised she didn't have an "accident" years later. The fact he just accepted the divorce and they went their separate ways (as much as they could, given the situation) after she admitted to aborting his kid out of hatred was bonkers.

I feel crazy for this but I think the original release is better than the directors cut that came out last year or so
He changed the ending so michael doesn't die and drop the orange in the end. It just fricking fades out with him on the chair

                Anonymous

Nah you're wrong. The opening alone is better. Instead of opening up with a slow pan and fade showing locations of the first two films, the home, the dock, it's boring. Instead it opens up with Michael talking to the cardinal, that's how it should be. And the ending is much better because Michael doesn't die. He doesn't die after it cuts to black. The original where he keels over is such a stupid decision. It's jarring.

                Anonymous

I agree with you on the opening, but nah I find the original ending to be far better and much more complete. Michael dies alone in sicily. What's the point of just cutting it out with a fade? Is he going back to do a part 4 now? Just seemed an unnecessary change to me. The whole buildup to the end of 3 was fantastic and not a part that needed any touching

                Anonymous

I prefer the original ending too. To me it’s Michael in his final moments thinking if it was all worth it when in the end he dies alone with a stray dog near him

                Anonymous

What's the point? It's him reminiscing as an old man. What's the point in showing him die and slump over awkwardly? Hahaha yeah, FRICK YOU MICHAEL! Is that the reason? I like the character, I don't think he deserves a bullshit death.

                Anonymous

He dies not long after the credits roll anyways, only difference is you seeing it. He renamed the film 'the death of Michael corleone' to then take the death out of the ending. Its modern subversion bullshit for the sake of it

                Anonymous

                >whats the point
The point is that Vito Corleone fled Sicily because of those bad practices and when he died he was surrounded by family. He was always about family and community even though he also committed violence. Michael on the other hand killed his family, ruined lives, and at the end of his story he dies alone in the same place his father fled.

                Anonymous

Yep, not entirely Michael's fault though. The entire business was changing. It wasn't the golden age of the mafia anymore, drugs & narcotics led to more violence and bloodshed and Michael did what he knew he had to to stay on top. Thats the whole point of him trying to go legit later in life with the regrets. If Michael had been in vitos time and position he wouldn't lived the same life as him, and vice versa, imo. Hell Michael would have had a sicilian wife still if it wasn't for kaboom

Kay didn’t have an abortion. If she did Tom would’ve been killed like Fredo because she couldn’t leave the compound without his permission. She just said it to hurt him.

false, it's about the sins of the father and the empire he built and friends he made along the way and the unenthusiastic but willing son doing what he has to do to hold the empire together, including killing old family friends and eventually actual family

It’s really about the decline of the Italian identity, told through how the Corleone family goes from community leaders, to principled gangsters, to regular crime lords, to corrupt legitimate businessmen. Contrast the opening scene of Part I with the very Italian, traditional wedding with Part II, with a very Americanised party where the band can’t even play Italian music.

The setting was the late 1940s, where it's unusual for women to meet men alone in hotel rooms, yet Kay meets Michael there, they knew each other act college, and she follow him home, staying with him all the while, when at that point in time, they weren't even engaged.
