That's plausible. The metal can seriously deform the bullet. The used to use iron/wood on ships for this reason. Iron to deform the projectile and wood to catch it

I always wondered why they never do composite shots with just 1 shot of the actor behind the car doing action things in the action scene. And another shot where they just destroy the car with bullets.

Budget issues and the need for reshoots. You can't trash a car if you don't have the time and money to replace the broken parts if they need to do the shot again or use the prop later. It's mostly a television issue.

Ok so let me get this straight...

Jackie kicks over the table, and then starts firing from the floor. But...wouldn't that mean he's firing through the table? So the bullets from this weird suppressor'd...something, go through his table but they don't penetrate the couch cushions? And then the dudes firing back with their unsupressed weapons (why was the can on that rifle to begin with?) can't shoot through the table, the one Jackie was just firing through at them?

Why is it when people make gunfights, they just say "Yeah bro do whatever, we'll set off some squibs and add some muzzle flashes and smoke in post and it'll all be fine."? You still need to fricking choreograph this shit.

I was watching Reacher recently, and the gun that the dude sort of adopts as his own personal weapon is a fricking Desert Eagle, which as we all know is .50AE.

.50AE is a fricking massive round and the Deagle is a massive pistol, shit weighs way more than is comfortable. So whenever they use one in a movie or show, people be swinging it around, you have to realize they're essentially swinging a 5lb dumbell in their hand. It's tiring, it's cumbersome, and it's not easy to do. And then when they fire it, they're like "Yeah just give the guy a little blood spurt and a red circle like he got shot in the head."

Bro if you take a fricking 50AE to the dome, you don't have a head anymore.

Sorry this might be a dumb question but how do soldiers all manage in real life? Do they all wear ear protection, but then how do exactly can they hear their environment?

            >but how do soldiers all manage in real life?
Earplugs. They may not use them if they're going to be outside and have to shout at eachother, but if you know you're going into any kind of enclosed space you bring earplugs. Usually earplugs aren't completely noise-cancelling, they just keep the worst of the shit tamped down enough that it doesn't absolutely destroy you, but also it's basically a given that most people who serve in the military will come home with tinnitus or massive hearing loss.

anon said but we’ve also developed new ear protection over the last few decades and now they electronic earpro that dampens certain sounds but allows you to hear people speaking, like Quietpro. Unfortunately, this wasn’t a thing when I was a Zogbot and my hearing suffered for it.

              Anonymous

Nowadays it‘s probably active earpro attached to your helmet, enhances quiet noises and dampens loud ones.
When i was in the Luftwaffle 25 years ago, we had earplugs.
Long guns aren‘t as bad as hand guns in that regard.

Yeah I wanted to say that most likely they're giving everyone electronic mic/earphone combos, but I don't exactly keep up with military equipment in that regard, so I didn't know if it was standard kit or just a per-mission kinda thing.

Some people are super into the gear and dress-up, me I just like guns like a normal person.

              >but also it's basically a given that most people who serve in the military will come home with tinnitus or massive hearing loss.
              God damn that's rough

Oh yeah, it's kinda fricked. Like, I worked at a gun range for a while, so all the earpro stuff is mandatory at all times, but if you're out in the field with people you're most likely not going to have time to throw on a full kit every time you get into some shit. And that's not to mention the mortars, howitzers, etc.

There's a video floating around of some US / Euro volunteers fighting in Ukraine, one guy blatantly can't hear shit and is always looking around. It's explained that he didn't bring earpro, and that now, after being in intermittent contact for a few hours, including people firing off shoulder launched rockets, his hearing is utterly c**ted.

Like there's at least two bits in the video where someone yells info at him and he can't hear them and asks them to repeat themselves, and the guy yelling instructions at him is literally two feet behind him shouting directly at him.

Some movies nowadays do sometimes have the sound whine and drop out for a few seconds when a gun is fired near someone's head, I suppose, but it's just stylized momentary distraction usually.

The gun katas. Through analysis of thousands of recorded gunfights, the Cleric has determined that the geometric distribution of antagonists in any gun battle is a statistically predictable element. The gun kata treats the gun as a total weapon, each fluid position representing a maximum kill zone, inflicting maximum damage on the maximum number of opponents while keeping the defender clear of the statistically traditional trajectories of return fire. By the rote mastery of this art, your firing efficiency will rise by no less than 120%. The difference of a 63% increase to lethal proficiency makes the master of the gun katas an adversary not to be taken lightly.

Hallow point rounds which would be standard carry for most people will actually most likely not pen car doors. If you were shooting copper solids they will or fmj they will. But no one irl unless they're a Black person would carry Fmj in a handgun outside of practice at the range. Litterally any rifle caliber will pen a car door with ease

How the frick can it be, that the show that gave us pic related also showed a realistic portrayal of firing a gun in a confined space when Philly got whacked?

Nah it's used in a couple of TV shows, it's just a terrible prop they give to actors when they either don't want to deal with having an armorer on the set

      >in a confined space
That might be it? Aren't there was stricter rules when it comes to the props being used in open locations like that neighbourhood scene? Like, you have to sign way more insurance stuff if you're using a real gun with blanks in it in a public place, whereas if you're in a confined space in a studio you can get away with less paperwork since the public isn't endangered no matter how you frick up the gun use?

I swear I've read something to this effect somewhere.

Hes just poimting out that the Sopranos has one of the best gun realistic scenes and one of the worst.

I still don't understand why they did it. Any random revolver would have been a better choice. WHY?

If I was a clever writer I would say something about going back to that level of tech because it required far less precision and black powder is easier to get than smokless.
I am going to assume they are not clever

OP is a moron. The holes are fine. The real problem is that the guy on the other side of that door isn't dead. A car door is just a piece of sheet metal and a plastic, it has no ability to stop a bullet. There's some reinforcement bars for crash purposes that could stop a bullet, but they're pretty small

This anon is right. If you want to use a car for cover the only parts that have enough metal to stop bullets are the engine block and the structures around the wheels.

    modern movie shooting scenes:
    >fake looking cgi muzzleflash
    >doesn't illuminate the surroundings at all
    >huge cgi puff of smoke hangs in air and insta-fades away
    >no recoil, actor has to fake it badly
    >no shell casings
    >no action on the firearm, handgun slides dont go back and charging handles on rifles are stationary
    >weak tinny tappy sound effects like a kids cap gun toy
    and no squibs anymore either
    >fake looking cgi puffs of smoke and sparks when objects are hit that dont leave behind holes
    >fake looking cgi blood prays out of bad guys when hit that disappears mid-air

hope Baldwin gets the chair for making sure we'll never get blank firing real guns in movies ever again that make even the lamest scenes instantly more visceral and believable and not having the highest budget movies looking like a Freddie Wong youtube video from 2015, oh and that woman dying or whatever that too
