It's a cycle. They spend a decade or two allowing creative freedoms and real popular passion projects to boom and thrive, then take the IP of those popular things and use them to push whatever bullshit is on the agenda and use the funds from when they were good to weather the storm. Ad infinitum.
Earliest version of this I can think of with television was probably the cancelling of all those sitcoms that romanticized midwestern life and large families at the peak of their popularity in the mid to late 1900s and instead start making shows about city lifestyles.

    >no Anon, it'll be available in a few weeks of *paid streaming platform with ads*
the law in my country against piracy is nonexistent due to us not being creators of anything. The government doesn't care, there is no risk of virus unless you are functionally moronic and saves you time and money.

      >it is weird that nobody pirates anymore.
People stopped because streaming became a thing. When piracy was big you typically had to go to an actual store to rent physical copies. With Netflix you ordered them online and they shipped to you. Yeah you didn't have to go outside but it still took at least a day for the movies to arrive. In that kind of environment yeah downloading a 1.36GB 480p file to watch on your 21 inch CRT was actually preferable unless you had dial up or something.

the only benefit to streaming vs pirating that I can think of is that you get a catalogue of things to browse through, similar to looking for videos to hire from back in the day but without the sovl of cover art.

That said, Netflix has an awful variety now. It's getting worse and worse unless you're into budget bollywood films or copy paste kdrama. Better off just finding some online directory, and then downloading direct anyway.

Yeah because you know what you're doing. I'm not joking when I say you're in the top 1% of computer users these days. The benefit to normal people is that they're not worried Netflix is going to drain their entire bank account if they enter in their credit card info, or is installing malware on their device, or the ISP sending them a letter. Just going on most piracy websites without an adblocker, which is something most people don't actually use, is an atrocious experience.

      >Even my old housemates and friends that I knew pirated back in the day give me the stink face at the idea of me just downloading a series for them to watch
You have to understand most normies dont watch shows because they enjoy them, they watch them to be "in" and to live common experiences they can use to relate to other people. The genius of streaming sites is that they managed to convert the medium into an actual part of that common experience.
Where before it was "have you seen x movie? it was great!", they were able to shift the question to be "have you seen x movie ON NETFLIX? it was great!", so for people that want to watch stuff for the purpose of social assimilation, which is basically all women plus a good portion of men, watching it elsewhere detracts from their purpose.

I have a projector room so anything less than blu ray quality will look like 240p. I spent 1k on an audio setup and I want to use the whole setup damn it. Plus pirating stuff never has the special features, but I do pirate shit that I can’t find, is too expensive, or I don’t care enough to own.

This. The bigger the screen, the more resolution and picture quality matters. Try watching a highly compressed 720p on a big-ass screen and it will look like shit.

i wouldn't mind buying blurays, but not only is it way too expensive most of the time (£20 for a 10 years old mainstay catalogue), but you also have to consider that title might be updated sooner or later with a fresher scan.
why would i purchase a mediocre-looking/sounding bluray (ex : GoldenEye, All The Presidents Men, Star Wars) if it'll be updated in the near future? or not, because of coypright issues and whatnot.
even worse is when there are titles/bonus features that are exclusive to a region. it's way too costly to import Ozsploitation flicks from Australia but they're not licenced anywhere else so you have no choice.

I realize you can get a remux or a full disc instead but 7GB is totally fine to watch 99% of movies.

Why do people go out of their way to spend money on cheap plastic discs when kino is freely online and cheap to play on any device?

People are editing kinos and ruining them and soon the kinos wont even be available for streaming. Many of the interesting films true film buffs want to see are available exactly nowhere online

Are you stupid? All your precious blurays have been copied to millions of hard drives, ssds and servers all over the world and they are all owned by people sitting on shelves. Buying them won't make a difference because the rest of the world is doing a better job of copying those blurays than your gay little shelf does.

Holy shit imagine wanting to buy plastic this badly. Kek.

Piracy has made it so pretty much every movie you want is available online for free. Even the movies you can't buy anymore.

I download all of ThreeSixtyp tv shows, averaging at 150mb an episode and watch them through media player classic with reshade using lottes crt filter for scanlines and a bit of bloom. And have never been happier.

most people would spend a lot more money on media if they switched to a ppv model with everything $1 or less.

Hahaha as if anybody would charge $1 for a rental. Even indie movies can't afford to charge that little.

Is there a good site to watch or download movies with directors commentaries? So far I got no luck

Private trackers are the only good way to find movies with extras and commentary. They preserve all that stuff for every movie they can.
