Reinforced the same tired WWII and McCarthyism narratives that benefit the military industrial complex and commie bureaucracies alike. Also it was a tedious bore. Laboring along at a snail's pace to tell us the same old lies. It wasn't even an entertaining piece of propaganda.

It’s not bad but it’s not amazing either. I’d give it a generous 7/10 for the acting and the trinity test sequence. It was way too long though and Oppenheimer had legitimate connections with communists, more so than the movie let on. It’s well established that the NKVD recruited several Berkeley professors and multiple people on the Manhattan Project, so the whole “poor Oppenheimer is being persecuted” narrative didn’t make any sense. It was good but extremely overrated. With that said, people are dying for something that isn’t capeshit so I’m glad the movie did well

      >“poor Oppenheimer is being persecuted” narrative didn’t make any sense
This movie isn't going for that. It reveals that one of his guys spied for the communists, and it portrays Oppenheimer as a flip flopper and someone who knows his reputation allows him a lot of leeway morally. It's just an honest telling of the book, and persecuting Oppenheimer was the result of a personal vendetta rather than something that punished prior or prevented future leaks.

I don't think the movie's bad, I actually think it might be his best. But even so, Nolan is still a hack.

The explosion was underwhelming the first watch. It’s worse on the second watch. The villain’s motivation was disappointingly juvenile and was defeated by a deux ex machina. Glossed over some historical details such as the Soviet invasion of Manchuria that arguably had more to do with Japanese surrender than the bombs did. Overall a good movie deserving of awards just not Nolan’s best.

What’s funny is that girls will complain that Oppenheimer is too long yet Titanic is even longer

        Anonymous

Was the plot framing device of Titanic some boring courtroom examination of the building of the ship and the subsequent sinking? Did Cameron not show the sinking? Was the focus of the film the flimsy Federal Reserve conspiracy theory? Did Titanic dedicate like 60% of its runtime between some random beef between Captain Smith and Ismay?

          Anonymous

Titanic is an awful comparison. Oppenheimer is Titanic if the ship sinks, and then the next hour is a court room drama where we find out the sinking was intentional, and some kind of insurance fraud.

Nolan was trying too hard to make the story seem epic when it's really not. Certain moments seem almost like a superhero movie, as if he approached this the same way he did Batman.

Unfocused, overdone, needlessly pompous, dishonest and worst of all boring.

Fat Man and Little Boy from 1989 did it way better.

Makes no sense to me why all the supporting actor hype went to RDJ and not Matt Damon. Until he shows up the film is drier than armadillo shit.

Damon was a bit stiff (though maybe that's what he was aiming for).

Paul Newman made a better Leslie Groves imo.

It's not even the best Nolan explosion, in fact I don't even think it makes the top 5 of his movies.

That's a good explosion, but I liked the one in Oppenheimer because of the build up. You're focusing on the explosion itself, but I'm rating the entire scene, which is much longer than the explosion itself. The one in The Dark Knight is just Joker walking away from a hospital and then it explodes.

It's not an explosion scene, and it's a scene where they're testing a bomb, so everything that happens before it matters. We're told by Einstein that the detonation could ignite the atmosphere, and later, Robert himself says the chance of that happening is less than zero. Sorry that you're unable to appreciate anything that isn't the explosion itself. I'm surprised someone like you would even want to talk about Oppenheimer, but I guess the rest of the board is even worse.

It's not unreasonable to expect someone of Nolan's caliber to make the bomb in the atomic bomb movie look good, and he sure as frick didn't.

Says nothing particularly insightful about its subject matter, all while pulling a straight face in order to convince you that it's Doing Something Important. All Nolan films are like this.He finds some cool math fact out on wikipedia or reddit and makes a 3 hour masturbatory slog up about it.

    >"Mr agent, someone has stolen...the hypotenuse."
    >"I thought all right angled triangles had a..."
    >"Someone has stolen EVERY hypotenuse."
    >The villian is some old Shakespeare luvvy like Derek Jacobi. Michael Caine is in an iron lung.
    >Someone is killed by a big falling triangle. The lead nods to himself, says 'equilateral' under his breath.

Best I can say for Nolan is that he's a competent action director and can do fun setpieces. He should be forever banned from writing anything though, because he's not as good a writer as he insists he is and it shows.
