Drip-feeding information to your audience between episodes can work, but you need to contextualize the flashback as impartial/incomplete information.
Usually in a backstory flashback episode like this, you would bookend the story with the character in the flashback going to the same location, or sitting down to recount their memory. This would help place the flashback in the story, instead of just being pasted in between episode 2 and 4. They already established nightmares in the first episode, there was no reason to not end the episode with one/both of the girls waking up, unless they literally pasted the episode in somewhere are production.
As a stand alone episode it's meaningless and substanceless.

It was really just poorly written, it's pretty obvious the people who wrote the script decided on what was going to happen before they figured out how to make it happen, and then just threw together some random shit. I understand and almost appreciate what they were going for, but the way they went about it was pants on head moronic. What makes the show bad isn't gay black women, what makes it bad is the level of suspension of disbelief it demands for a reasonable, rational human to watch the show and not be constantly saying "what", "how", "no fricking way". Fire in space? People consistently taking actions that make no logical sense? A stone structure burning down because someone lit a book on fire?
In a world where a society of women coexists together and they have no knowledge of men whatsoever, how would they even deal with their sexual desires? A lot of people think that it's going to be perfect, that these women are going to be totally happy and have an unconditional love for one another. But in a realistic scenario, I feel like some women in this type of society are just not gonna desire it from other women because they're genetically hard-coded for men, and/or preferences is still going to play a large role in this society with some preferring a particular body type, or some preferring a particular race or class of women assuming racism and classism still exists.
If a woman-only society was possible, we would have already seen instances of it IRL.
