Because it demonstrates that the quality of the work itself isn't a priority. It's essentially an especially obnoxious form of stunt casting that exists only to cause drama and generate hype. The real tragedy is when the original creators are such limp wristed push overs that they go along with it. Look at Gaiman and Sandman, he's so desperate to destroy any and all artistic merit and visual cohesion of his own work that it makes you question if the whole thing wasn't an accident to begin with.
It's a corporate mandate, they don't really have a choice.
