these "elevated" horror movies may be well constructed and acted but they can suck my hairy balls. I want my horror to be low brow and exploitative. I watch movies for escape from my dark reality, not to make me more "socially aware" or whatever. leave my fantasy world alone *spits*

It's not always true but more often than not. I remember watching The Autopsy of Jane Doe and utterly hating how they ended it with the monster triumphing. No need for these "horror myths", you want a story about triumph over evil. If it has to be a tragedy, at least make it operatic.

nu filmmakers view horror as "lowbrow" thats why "elevated" horror became a thing, i hate it too.

      >"elevated" horror
Already had that with stuff like The Devil Rides Out, Gothic, Bram Stoker's Dracula and more recently (still before most of the A24 slop) Scott's Alien prequels (which are high budget, cultured slashers).

Yeah, what "elevated" means is that it'll have really on-the-nose modern political shit and it'll be as intentionally slowed pace as possible because they think that makes the film smarter.

The scariest thing is the idea that women have agency and don't have to listen to you. You are utterly incapable of achieving the life you dreamed about as a kid.

There's no allegory, it's actual mental illness and an actual serial killer. Very different than watching 2 hours of a woman walking around her house and seeing a ghost that's actually a representation of her sadness and the patriarchy instead of being an actual ghost.

Well, when the main character is a woman, you know what to expect. Only a few movies aren't like that.

  16. 1 month ago

The Amityville Horror is quite literally playing on the terror of homeownership, fretting you've sunk your financial future on a lemon.
The entire slasher genre is about how scary it is to be a teenager trying to navigate sex drugs and alcohol without getting in trouble.
Invasion of the Bodysnatchers was all about political paranoia.
The Shining was about domestic dysfunction.
Silence Of The Lambs was about navigating male-dominated fields as a woman.
Childs Play is about navigating single parenthood and how you can't always be switched on to what's going on with your kid, and falling to the temptation to patch those gaps with consumerism.

But before all that, they're all just fun spooky movies that you don't have to think about if you don't want to. They certainly don't bore you to tears holding you on the ground in a headlock demanding for you to "say uncle" in the form of a video essay analysis, like modern dunning kruger horror movies made by people who think they're smart for being too stupid to understand older horror movies.
There's a fricking reason things are scary beyond "loud noise, make jump!"

That's what I'm saying. The old movies had meaning for anyone who chose to see it, but they also focussed on actually being a good scary movie. "Elevated" shit isn't elevated at all, it's not any more meaningful, it's just worse.

cause its hard to come up with a reason for horror movie things to be happening. It's why I just automatically ignore anything involving ghosts, monsters, hauntings etc. Blair With Project being the exception but that works because you never actually see anything happen so it's actually incredibly realistic
