is it actually "depression" if your life sucks and/or shitty things are happening to you recently? Isn't that just a normal healthy emotional reaction to circumstances?

I always thought of depression as sadness for no good reason.

      >I always thought of depression as sadness for no good reason.

Nope, that's not accurate at all. Depression is sadness that lasts a long time (for me, it's indefinite), and you'll know you're depressed if you don't enjoy things that you used to.
What do you think I do, for example? I wake up, come to Cinemaphile, and that's my day. I've actually been doing that for most of my life.

afaik theres a lot of stuff that gets lumped under "depression" which is why its easily a contested topic. it really is a catch-all term for stuff that causes similar depressive symptoms

      >fricked up brain chemical production/regulation that leads to immense and unavoidable sense of despair, pointlessness and doom and gloom, even if the person's life is otherwise ok
      >long-term damage to the psyche from trauma and such, causing the individual to feel a perpetually disheartened, sad, etc. kind of doom spiral over a long duration of time
      >current life predicament or recent events causing depressive symptoms and emotional pain
      >unstable emotions and mood swings in general (or bipolar disorder) that cause disproportionately strong emotional responses to bad things happening
      >any mixture of above

advice for dealing with depression is usually kind of shit because there are so many things that can cause it. better outlook and new experiences may help with depression stemming from life events, but doesn't do shit if your brain chemicals are so fricked you don't get dopamine release from anything. most people simply have no frame of reference of how bad different forms of depression can get, and they think that them having 1 type makes them an authority on all of them. a lot of girls have messed up brain chemistry so they easily get depressed over random shit. that feeling is definitely real, even if the causes seem trivial.

Psychology is pseudo science. There is no separation between you feeling exactly what you would expect someone to feel in your situation and your brain having a real issue where you're not producing dopamine and serotonin.
This massive push for depression being a medical disorder has caused millions of people who are in awful situations to just not do anything because they're ''depressed'' and there is no point trying. No reason to get up and exercise, eat well, meet family and friends because they are ''depressed'' and won't find any enjoyment out of any of it. It's self-fulfilling.

It’s just something you learn to live with and do your best to not let anyone see. I’ve known 5 people who have killed themselves, all but one seemed like people who had their shit together. The most successful one was a 17 year old girl with what seemed like a bright future ahead of her until she jumped in front of a train. Elliot Rodger is dead, isn't it? I didn't really care when it happened, but if he's dead, then everything ended the way it should have. I still don't see the issue. Do we want children from people like Elliot Rodger? Absolutely not, so the ending to that story was fine.

That tells me Elliot Rodger was unintelligent, and also he didn't browse Cinemaphile, or he could have met someone like me, who would explain he's a fricking idiot. How does killing people solve his problem? It doesn't. He realised this at the end, which is why he took his own life. His actions lead to prison, which means he actively made his life worse, due to his stupidity.

From what I remember he didn’t think it would solve his problem. He just felt like they deserved that punishment for rejecting him. He also resented men that had girlfriends too and was likely why he killed his male roommates. If he couldn’t have a gf nobody deserved one. Depression isn't rational. I've struggled with depression throughout my life despite always having had a technically fulfilling social life, a job, sometimes being in a relationship, etc. You people equate loneliness with depression, these aren't the same thing. Something lots of women struggle with is not being seen, in that they're often not respected or straight up not seen as a human even though they have lots of friends and acquaintances. Men have a leg-up on women in this regard because men, no matter who they are, are almost always seen as individuals, whereas women are put on this pedestal and seen as a sort of faceless monolith that's constantly underestimated and infantilized yet still valued and protected. I can imagine it being tough to self-actualize in a world your achievements aren't ever appreciated but rather just your breasts and ability to birth a child. Companies that practice affirmative action don't even do so because they want to appreciate women but because of guilt, and to parade them around in an effort to be seen as oh so progressive. I'm not even going to go into how much women hate their own bodies and hormones, fricking nightmare shells. I'd kill myself if I was a woman.

Female friendships are not the same as male friendships which are a lot deeper and more genuine. Every female friend group tends to leave out at least one member of it, or have girls that actively dislike each other but are mutually friends with another girl in the group. It’s easy to feel alone as a girl who is disliked and excluded by her own friends. My friend group in high school was torn apart because one friend made a burn book (from mean girls) and wrote shit about our other friend in it who she actually hated, only to blame writing the horrible shit she wrote about it on another girl in the group. This same girl would write fake secret admirer letters to our friend who no boys ever liked because she thought it was funny. Adult women meet other women on bumble for shallow friendship, just so they have people to go to things with which is really sad.

Men and women's experiences aren't comparable because we're so different both physically and mentally. A lot of incels and such tend to focus on the fact that women have easier access to men and do better in dating, but it's moronic to use how easy it is to have sex as the sole metric for how "easy somebody has it".
Women could have all the sex in the world but they choose not to because they have to be careful and their sexuality isn't the same as ours. The worst fear of many women is to marry somebody who doesn't really love them, or abuses them, or rapes them. Every woman knows somebody this has happened to.
The average man has it pretty easy. They go to school, make friends, go to work and then settle down. Their opinions are valued and their potential is limitless, they're seen as a person instead of a token or a breeding sow. Women's sole bargaining chip is their looks. but men can be productive workers, or intelligent, or funny, and we'll do fine. Gen Z is the first generation that's ever shifted focus from men's personalities and productiveness to looks, while women have struggled with body dysmorphia and eating disorders for decades, and it's a common, well-accepted thing, the female experience.
The only type of man who has it "objectively" worse than a woman is a poor man, a man without a home. But this isn't the "average man".

You can apply logic to some deaths. War, political struggle, self-defense, etc. You may even feel justified in mocking somebody that's passed away because that person was terrible in most ways, and made life hell for others. But celebrating a suicide of somebody you don't know anything about is objectively evil.

I wish I could pretend to care. I'm really not sure why I'm listening to this garbage in the only thread I have open that's moving. I'm filtering the thread now, and you guys can talk to each other. Literally shit I don't care about: the thread.

You are a waste of tissue, with no soul.

It’s still better than what the average man goes through

She did feel alone. Nobody else liked her favorite flavor of Snapple. Alienation is real, and if you're invalidating her feelings I hope you fricking die you fricking FREAK! DIE!

Truth be told I get what she means but it’s nowhere near comparable to what a man goes through

You know the problem there? You were listening to a female. You shouldn't do that.

I’m just giving back what she told me

Holy fricking cringe. Stopped reading there.

Are there any balanced opinions here?

Women bring that shit on themselves. They have lower expectations on them which isn’t brought on themselves, but they are happy to take advantage of, and they often fail to even live up to those lowered expectations. This is why a ton of guys go to the gym to get “in shape” which only makes them average, while a girl who gets in shape is a super star. Same deal with skills of any sort. A guy learns to code “cool, you want a medal? Get to work.” A woman learns to code “OMG GET THIS WOMAN A MEDAL!” I appreciate your impassioned defense of them, but women are full of shit in 99% of the cases. They rely solely on their looks and sexual value because none of them want to admit it, but it makes life easy mode. It comes at the expense of them taking an interest in anything though that offsets the work their looks do. They don’t have to be carried by their objectification, but they choose to by rights of how they choose to spend their free time. They aren’t innocent little victims like they’d have you believe.

Depression is a reaction to something, figuring out what that is and fixing it can be very hard.

for most people here it's a natural reaction to bad living. playing video games or browsing the web all day, eating like shit, poor sleeping habit, being asocial, no exercise, no fresh air etc. - of course that is gonna make you feel like shit.
