The motion of this picture made me realize I've never seen footage of a sperm whale moving anywhere near what their top speed must be. It makes sense: most of the footage we have of them consists of them cruising alongside divers to check us out, so little effort involved in the movement their tails would hardly even be moving. Imagine a wide shot of a sperm whale with somewhere to be, using body movements we usually associate with dolphins. The sight of that massive tail fluke thrashing up and down must be absolutely surreal

They aren't dramatically faster. There's a very consistent inverse relationship between metabolism and speed, and longevity and size, among marine life.
They are pretty slow because the prey they hunt (giant squids) live in such depth that nothing endothermic could move particularly fast. Sperm whales basically cheat by being exothermic in a food web where nothing else is.
