The black lady. Her story was so obviously shoved in there for diversity points. It meant nothing and was just adding on minutes to a long enough film.

It was shot digitally even though it went out of its way to emulate film stock with grain and scratches, etc. If they wanted to make it seem like an authentic 70s movie they should have just shot it on 35mm.

Now that I think about it I agree with this. And when you think about Payne's previous films they didn't have this.

you have to be pretty moronic to not see why the black lady was important to the story, for one thing there is the whole idea of her missing a son and Angus not really having a mother figure in his life, so that the two of them fulfil that role in each other's life for the two weeks they spent together (with Giamatti taking on the father role). Her son's death / being forced to go to war because he is poor also acts as a dramatization of the fricked up world that Giamatti's character is constantly railing against, without it his ranting would seem completely disingenuous since we never really see any other examaples outside of the other kids and teachers being dicks. Further, the black lady pivotoly convinces Giamatti to help Angus multiple times and her leaving them alone near the end is kind of like taking the training wheels off for their relationship--is Giamatti able to be nice to Angus without an outside force telling him to? Plus her breakdown at the party give Giamatti the excuse he needs to leave after having his heartbroken.

It is 100% woke by including some fat lazy black lady who has no real connections to the other characters. Just sassy and there for diversity reasons.

People get all of that. I feel like you either see it or you don't with modern movies. Other anons have pointed this out too so obviously this isn't just me or one other person noticing something.

It does feel like a modern take on the 70s Which might also explain this

It was shot digitally even though it went out of its way to emulate film stock with grain and scratches, etc. If they wanted to make it seem like an authentic 70s movie they should have just shot it on 35mm.

Her breakdown at the party was summed up by two words, also she basically got Giamatti fired by pressuring him to take the kid to Boston. She was comprised mainly of mhms and smoking/drinking. She was a boring character not necessary to the movie.

Modern film grain looks like shit. If somebody knows what they're doing, you can achieve a better grain digitally than using film; most people however try to overdo the retro look, or just think filming on film makes it look better

In the scenes where he was just relaxing with the black lady, her acting seemed very out of place. Like a character from 2020 transported back in time.
I thought the way the kid was talking to his schizo dad was very selfish and inconsiderate, as if he was intentionally trying to confuse the schizophrenic man instead of carefully trying to familiarize himself with him. I would accept it as he's a dumb selfish teenager, but the film treats that scene as a good thing and the kid as noble for causing that much chaos.
Also the kid was a dick for not helping the korean kid at night and making him sleep in cold piss.

    1. Except for Paulie G, people all talk like they were plucked from modern day LA
    2. Paul Giamatti's character was a militant atheist
    3. Priest tells them to have a happy Hanukah
    4. Black people clearly there for DEI points
    5. Tries way too too hard with the kid's dad, the film INSISTS that you must feel bad but IDGAF

It was a pretty mid film propped up by Paul Giamatti's performance. Sideways was way better.

Oh, and I almost forgot. At the party Lydia is introducing her family and he sister has a mulatto kid (father nowhere to be seen). The camera lingers on the little noglet as if to say "wow, look how great this is."

Anyone else getting tired of film discussion on Cinemaphile? When it isn't a shitpost and someone wants to talk about a film, it's inevitably ranting about women or black people. I've been here forever, I was posting and downloading black people melon gifs and shitposting constantly, but now the fun of that edginess got mistaken for actual points of reason. I do appreciate open discussion forums, and I don't think anyone should be prevented from saying 'Black person' or whatever else really, but it really is just the same thread over and over again. Where can I go? Unironically reddit seems to have better options, but I'd like something a ilttle less involved. Somewhere I can read discussions on films without it just being angry /misc/ rants.
