FORGOTTEN CANON

There is a one-shot story which heavily implies pre-serum Steve Rogers was gangraped by bullies in the sweltering hot summer of 1942 after being turned down for military service.

      >Uncle Ben discovered a secret formula to easily repair teeth.
      >BIG Dentistry had him murdered to prevent it coming out.
      >It was made to seem like it was a random thug.
      >Peter didn't know about this.

Seriously, this actually fits in the thread, I'm forever grateful that we got Big Boss Frank and a decently tacticool, modern run before Marvel decided that they had to violently shit all over any existence or use of the Punisher for real life political reasons. I still remember picking up a few issues of it at my LCS a decade ago mid-run and being floored. And it was a pretty clear inspiration, too.

Honestly, that's the part that kills me the most with Punisher, I know it ain't considered acceptable these days, but don't fricking put him with magical ninjas and violently projectile vomit over a liked character. They should have just leaned in, made him fight government mooks like the TV show, and made it Marvel Gear Solid. But that'd require editorial that doesn't hate its characters and readership.

                >He's from magical ninja land

You're not inherently wrong, but I was referring to the recent run that a few other anons referenced where he changed all his normal tactics and ideals, took over the famously evil magical ninja society as their assassin messiah or whatever, changed his logo for totally in world reasons™, did magic bullshit and fricked around until everyone he ever knew disowned him and he committed hypersudoku. Then was replaced by a blonde guy with laser guns everyone already forgot about and was practically a carbon copy anyways.

Frick Jason Aaron and I wouldn't shed a tear if Marvel editorial got firebombed. Say what you will about DC, but they aren't nearly as often outwardly hostile to their characters and readership.

Also, the magical ninjas are one of the worst elements in Daredevil. The Hand are by far the worst part of Miller's run and he only put them in there because he was going through his 80s weeb phase, but because they showed up in Miller's run, that means they get to keep popping up everywhere Daredevil shows up and a few other places besides that. I genuinely hate it. They're so damn boring. Frick the Hand.

                >Punishergays HATE that

I mean, two part problem. I think it's less that people hate the idea, and more that it was clearly defined/moved by Marvel trying to do image-based damage control. People love Punisher for shit like Max and clearly avoiding anything like that for trying to make it palatable or avoiding any implication that sometimes street criminals may need to just be shot leaves a bad taste in people's mouth.

And on top of that, the show going more in that direction was disappointing for similar reasons, in spite of actually being very quality. After hearing people be off about it, watching the first episode and the whole thing being him under the radar punctuated by him going ham with a sledgehammer to the tune of Tom Waits was fricking incredible. But I can see where the rest wasn't what people wanted when they heard they were making a show, especially after DD S2. I felt very similarly about the Moon Knight show. Respect for the aesthetic and great acting? Great! When I was floored they'd even make a Moon Knight show after the character's cultish meme-based surge in popularity, I didn't expect it to be "Indiana Jones: Egyptian Superpowers edition". I actually quite liked it, but it wasn't From The Dead or anything people think of when they think Moon Knight.

I like your ideas, though. It'd be very neat to see that "mid-level" kind of stuff, and reconciles his place in the world kore than the frequent odd history he's had of becoming Frankenstein and shit, which is a huge part of the canon/use of the character always being a bit muddled outside of clear, well-done side bits like Max. But I have always loved the idea of him as such an outsider in a bright world where you know shit's fricked if he shows up, and he's the black sheep urban legend that makes capes uncomfortable to even mention. But modern writers clearly don't want to be uncomfortable.

Hit the nail on the head. So many writers just seem to want to self insert to the point that it's blatant (look at Allysa Wong's entire catalogue). Well it's not like less mainstream comics fail at looking at dark vigilantism the recent Absolution story time showed that even with a blank check a lot of writers are uncomfortable going to certain places

I don't hate that at all, I think it's cool. My problem with Rucka's run was mainly that it was a boring book that pushed Frank as a character into the background, treating him as a boring "muh force of nature" plot device rather than do anything interesting with him. And since the whole plot of The Exchange wasn't interesting either, it made it so the only hook of the book for me became the Rachel character.
I know the same people who love Rucka's run probably hate Remender's, but I vastly prefer the latter because it's at least willing to play with the character's pulpy roots and grants us more of an insight into Frank, as well as more screentime with him in general.

Frank is front and center in Marvel Rivals which I’m still shocked about, they’ll probably bring him back in the comics soon enough.

Doesn't that completely rewrite the history/origin of both Cass and Huntress?

I don’t think that matters unfortunately, the post crisis Huntress and Cass have essentially never existed. Cass was never Batgirl, a villain, Black Bat, Bruce’s adopted daughter etc after she was finally brought back as Orphan. Huntress was split into 2 different versions of Helena Wayne and Bertinelli is a vaguely dark skinned secret agent but again with none of the original Helena Bertinelli‘s history.

I think she and Steph got their Batgirl identities and costumes back during Infinite Frontier but I don’t think it was really explained in universe why now all of a sudden. It’s possible that thanks to DC’s very loose everything is canon rules now that Cass has her entire history again, but for N52 and Rebirth none of that stuff happened. I remember she killing Harper Row’s parent, Orphan was a name David Cain used and she started using it to honor him after he sacrificed himself for her.

Honestly Wayne Family Adventures is the only story that still acknowledges her pre-Flashpoint stories properly, she’s even acknowledged as Bruce’s daughter there.

She's right. To have her come back to life and NOT be horrified at the monster Frank is would've been unbelievable. The only people mad about this are people who self-insert as Frank and get upset on his behalf.

This is likely bait and I want to tell you to go frick a poisonous snake raw, but on the off chance you're just seeing this out if context, see

It's one thing for her to say she disapproves and is offended him being the Punisher. I can buy that.
It's another to have her say "And even if I hadn't died, if I was alive one more minute I would have divorced you anyway.
            The frick is that about?

First, Aaron's Punisher Max had Bullseye reveal Frank Castle never loved his family and wanted them gone so he could go back to the army. Then Marvel made it canon that Maria and Frank hated eachother.

Horror at what he's become and done? Sure, that's fairly logical and may give the character some pause and development. The literal implication in that panel is she was about to ask him for a divorce anyways before she was killed and that he was always a piece of shit that nobody should like and was a shitty father is outright character assassination clearly driven by editorial trying to bury the character because that is in vogue and the popular idea of him isn't anymore.

Her coming back to life is stupid in general. Funny, people shit on Frank and his fans, but is fine with Pearl from the X movies. There’s that support a woman’s rage post women are sharing. Makes me wonder, if Punisher was a woman, would radical feminists on college campuses wear the skull instead of pussy hats?

Probably not but it would also mean that those freak authoritarian cops and soldiers cosplaying as frank before they murder people would back off. Itd be too feminist and offend them. Id be curious what would fill its role in its absence though.

Im having a very lazy goof. Batman would work but the anti gun stuff wouldnt fly. Jason todd feels too specific. Joker wouldnt mesh with their law and order image.

I wonder if they wouldnt try to steal superman's S? The American way and all that. Easily co opted.

Yeah, but then those would be seen as a hate symbol.

I remember when It: Chapter One came out, they actually want Pennywise to be the official mascot for the LGBT community. Then they tried to walk it back when the gay guy got eaten in Chapter Two. So I bet anything from a cotton eye Joe, to a damned if I know feminist Fran would wear the skull.
You do make me wonder: does DC have Punisher like character? There was a guy in a green coat and sunglasses that was offered a chance to do that for the government. A friend let me read his comics when we were on a plane years ago, I don’t remember all the details.

Showing how Frank turned his grudge into a never ending war for war's sake is a good setup for an antihero. But cutting out the 'descent' part and just making him a complete frickass takes all the nuance out of it.

Also, the Heart-Shaped herb which can make a normal man super soldier tier, was given to Peter by T'Challa years ago to try and cure his deadly illness
T'Challa declared Peter a worthy warrior in his own right which is very important, as the unworthy wouldn't survive ingesting it or rubbing it on their bodies

Obviously it didn't heal Peter, but it also didn't kill him. It's odd that this experience had absolutely 0 effect on his body and abilities in any way

The original Supergirl (atleast Post-Crisis) wasn't Superman's cousin, Kara. No they wanted to simplify the lore by introducing a shape shifting slime monster created by a Lex Luthor in a pocket dimension, who then later merged with the body of an "Earth-Born Angel", a concept I'm not entirely sure how to explain. She was a former cultist and had flame wings, and fought demons. She was then unceremoniously and quietly deleted from canon quickly after the return of the classic Superman's cousin version. The previous two versions have never been referenced again.

You're forgetting the part where she and Silver age Supergirl traded places for a while, fell in love with Silver/Bronze Age Superman, quietly married, had a kid, then swapped places again when SA Supergirl was suppose to die in CoIE; which is why every superhero mourned her death so much.

The wanted to simplify Superman's origins and keep him special by making him the only true Kryptonian. Instead of simplifying things though it just led the writers into making absolutely every other element outside of Supes himself into awkward nonsense to justify their continued presence.

There's also how Earth-Two Huntress and Robin's bodies were buried on the new main Earth after their deaths.

        Anonymous

Actually they didn’t even leave bodies to bury, they were essentially disintegrated along with the crystal Titans member. In the final issue everyone remembered what happened but as time went by I believe that DC retconned it so that they all vaguely recall teaming up to fight the Anti Monitor but without any of the multiverse aspects.

They randomly remembered E2 WW still existed decades later in Infinite Crisis though.

          Anonymous

They had something about bodies in the story where the JSA had to leave to fight Ragnarok, but you're right about the shadow demons originally disintegrating whoever they'd touch. That's how Dove originally died too, before it got changed to rubble crushing him.

            Anonymous

They changed Dove’s death too? I don’t remember this, but I never read the JSA story either so either retcons, the writers didn’t do their research or the universe changed things for whatever reason. It must feel morbid for Dick and Bruce to have graves belonging to an older version of themself and their lover/daughter respectively.

I don’t think they ever explained why Supergirl went from dying in the crisis to dying in some random battle to just never existing either. Fun fact, her actual Crisis incarnation from before she died is still alive and out there thanks to Convergence.

Yeah, the '80s Hawk and Dove series by the Kesels changed Don to being crushed because the Lords of Order and Chaos decided he was unworthy to be Dove in that moment. So he wound up with his powers just stripped while helping a child in the event that was originally the Crisis.

Bruce Wayne was canonically an FBI desk jockey for several weeks before becoming Batman.
Alfred's brother Wilfred and niece Daphne are post-Crisis canon according to Who's Who profiles despite not appearing since the 70s.

Harold was alive in Scott Snyder's All-Star Batman, Sasha was in Greg Rucka's Rebirth Wonder Woman run.

Don't forget no man's land being scrubbed from existence. I honestly don't think it's even been mentioned since the nu52 reboot.

In the possible future scenes of James Tynion's Detective run, it says Gotham has been "re-declared a No Man's Land". Jim mentions having lived through earthquakes in Gotham in Forever Evil: Arkham War #2. Helena's NML storyline was also referenced in more recent Detective awhile back.

How was this approved? How did the audience care? This is pure character Assassination, maybe this is why Fiege never used her as Clint’s wife in the MCU.

        Anonymous

Pretty sure the MCU already introduced a family of OCs for Hawkeye before this book launched. The Mockingbird solo book only happened because a version of her was in the Agents of SHIELD show.

This story was the result of the writer learning about the old West Coast Avengers story where Mockingbird gets drugged and raped by the Phantom Rider, but it sounded like she read a summary of it instead of actually reading it, as she seemed to believe it was a story told from Hawkeye's point of view, when he wasn't even present for those events. Thus the retcon that Mockingbird cucked Hawkeye with the Phantom Rider, and Hawkeye convinced himself it was rape out of pure cope. While the same issue has the Phantom Rider's ghost being angry at Mockingbird for killing him, we're not given any reason why they fought to the death after their entirely consensual relationship.

This was approved because of the absolute state of Marvel editorial, and any legitimate audience complaints were ignored because Marvel were already ignoring the hate the book was getting and dismissing it all as misogyny against the book's "feminist agenda". After Mockingbird got cancelled the same writer was rewarded by the same editor with a Vision miniseries that took about three years to produce then got cancelled after two issues had been solicited.

forgotten? that's a pretty consistent thing, even when some writer tries to retcon it so Hitler died to someone else it gets undone by another writer saying Hitler got burnt alive

Why would anyone want to change that? Hitler being burned alive by a a flying robot while his inner circle watched is the most badass historical fact imaginable. That's like if Tojo's canonical death was Capt America decapitating him when he threw his shield because a katana was stuck to it, but people tried to change it him actually dying from his attempted suicide because its "less flashy".

Periodically writers try to change it to hype up another character.

Fraction's run. Julius Caesar was actually a time travel tourist energy being who saw Caesar die in Gaul years or decades ago and lived out the rest of his life to keep the time stream intact, so he faked being killed by the senate and let the three beggars as recorded by history to carry him away. He bummed around on Earth afterwards for a couple millennia accruing wealth and used it to help the modern day Future Foundation. It's the same run that retcons away Reed being a pedophile.

I think the X-Men just overwhelm a lot of writers. Think about how many named mutants exist.
When you write, say, Batman. Yeah he also has a lot of side characters. But it's feesible to do an entire Batman run as a writer and the only supporting characters you're really required to use at any given time are Alfred, Jim Gordon, and maybe a Robin. All the other side kicks and his previous love interests can frick off. You can write 50 issues of Batman and not once have him interact with Dick or Jason or Barbara or Selina and nobody cares because they aren't necessary for your overarching plot about Mad Hatter going off the deep end and going full pedo mode and shooting right up to the top of the "Fricked up Batman villain" list right under Joker.

You don't have that luxury when writing The X-Men.
You NEED to write a team book. And you need to somehow keep a good chunk of the "A-list" X-people in the limelight. You need to somehow juggle a minimum of 10 characters at any given time and also maintain an encyclopedic knowledge of every important student that's ever gone to that school, and all their fricking inter-personal relationships and all their stupid fricking wonky powers so you don't accidentally create a new mutant that already exists.
You can't just say "You know what? For the next 20 issues, I'm going to focus on Emma Frost. Really dig into her hopes and aspirations and flesh her out as a character. It's been a few decades now since anyone gave her a genuine deep dive".
No. No you don't get to do that. Condense your Emma Frost deep dive into four pages at the start of your run and move on. We need to know what Wolverine, Cyclops, Storm, Jean, Nightcrawler, Rogue, Colossus, and Cable are doing and you have 12 issues to establish it while also incorporating anti-mutant drama and we need you to set up something with Mr. Sinister because we need your run to help hype people for the Wolverine game

It's too fricking much for one book.

And the first Nomad initially had a cape, but he tripped on it, so he decided to get rid of it.
Also, there was a Captain America in the Revolutionary War, making your numbering wrong, unless maybe you mean in terms of real world order, because I can't remember when he was invented. But I do know that he also had a cameo in the Ravencroft books mentioned in

There was a secret organization that got revealed at the end of the 2019 to 2020 Ravencroft series where a bunch of other crazy stuff happens, like it being revealed that in 1891 the Skrulls tried to invade Earth by impersonating Teddy Roosevelt, Wolverine was once framed for a serial killing perpetrated by a werewolf in the early 1900s, and during World War 2 Captain America fought Dracula who wanted the American government to remove the weaknesses from vampires.

Well that can't be canon anymore, since Steve canonically became Cap before Pearl Harbor. It's one of the reasons why Isaiah Bradley couldn't have been Captain America before Steve.

      Anonymous

There was actually one story where the reason Steve wanted to join the Army was because his brother died in Pearl Harbor. Later writers didn't like it both because it made Steve be motivated by revenge and because Captain America was created before Pearl Harbor, so this was retconned away as fake memories.

In the 90s it was made official canon that Joe Chill did not kill Batman's parents. At the end of the issue Batman concludes that there isn't enough evidence remaining to ever know who it really was.

I'm pretty sure every writer since then just ignored it though.

Who killed Batman's parents remaining an unsolved mystery is something I think I can get behind. Just a faceless thug from the streets that never gets identified

        Anonymous

Even if he got caught the next day it wouldn't change the fact that in Batman's mind, his parents were murdered by "crime" as a concept. Giving a face and a name to the Wayne murderer defeats the whole purpose. It doesn't have to be a totally unsolved mystery, but it does have to be an unimportant mugging.

And coincidentally, the Joker movies give Joker a similar "society" based motivation, so they could lean into that. Joker goes nuts because he was hurt by the light side of society, Batman goes nuts because he was hurt by the dark side of society.
