Francis Ford Coppola is having trouble getting a distributor for Megalopolis

>The self-funded epic is deemed too “experimental” and “not good” enough for the $100 million marketing spend envisioned by the legendary director.
If FFC can't get distribution for one of his films, what hope do we have that the future of film isn't just going to be remakes, capeshit, and b-movie horror/dramas?

    > Most of those who spoke to THR describe a film that is an enormously hard sell to a wide audience. Two people say it’s hard to figure out who is the good guy and who is the bad guy. The big exception is LaBeouf, who they say is the best thing about the film (he’s one of the antagonists).
    >
    >Several have mentioned an especially cringey sequence involving Jon Voight’s character in bed with what looks like a huge erection; the scene evidently takes quite the turn, but we will not spoil it here.

    >Not everyone was turned off. “I liked it enormously,” says one specialty label founder, who describes Megalopolis as a “very big film” that “has a real life. … How do you define commercial? You look at movie like Blade Runner and it became so much more commercial than on opening weekend.” Despite the vote of confidence, Megalopolis won’t find a home at his studio: “It takes time to find the right match,” he says.

    >Another studio head, however, was far less charitable in his assessment: “It’s so not good, and it was so sad watching it. Anybody who puts P&A behind it, you’re going to lose money. This is not how Coppola should end his directing career.”
    Sad times for Coppola bros...

      What?
      >Godfather I & II (esp. II)
      >Apocalypse Now
      >The Outsiders
      >Peggy Sue Got Married
      >Bram Stoker's Dracula
...those alone would be enough for a whole career, but he has more and has produced even more iconic movies.

You right! He got lucky with self-funding "Apocalypse Now". He filed for bankruptcy three times after self-funding "One From the Heart"

The man has never made a good movie. "Copolla" on a picture tells you it is trash.
        >lists shit movies
        Good job proving his point

You didn't even mention The Conversation, one of the best movies ever. If I recall correctly it was up for Best Picture along with another one of his movies because they took so long to finish

Something like this would be a guaranteed hit 20-30 years ago.

Why doesn't he just have every member of his dynasty donate a few million and cut them in on the profits? What's the point of having a huge family of wealthy a-listers if you cant leverage it

      >Why doesn't he just have every member of his dynasty donate a few million
I suspect only the Schwartzman's are good with money and know better than to use their own money. The richest relative he has is doing b-movies to get out of bankruptcy himself.

    >why doesnt he get one of his Hollywood friends to help advertise it
Hollywood ((friends)) don't work for free, and I think he is after global marketing...so probably need 10s of millions to spam social media, Cinemaphile, youtube, bilboards, AI generated articles and reviews in ((reputable)) print and online media, etc.

There is something to zoomer-brain, but betting against the shit that Hollywood is backing is probably a good bet. Now if I only had a spare $100M ...

Coppola doesn't want to meet the audience halfway and make it palatable with broad appeal. That's why his career only flourished in the 60s and 70s. This is the era that the likes John milius and James Cameron ushered in the 80s. He refuses to be a yuppie like Cameron. This movie is going to be an incoherent mess which will not make 25 cents. FFC probably doesn't realize how entrenched the consumerist economy is or just refuses to give a frick. No one will go watch this movie. And whatever message he wants to convey will be buried deep

This is probably a legit take. Things have changed so dramatically since around 2013 that unless you are very young you do not understand how shit things are.

100 million is a shit ton of money for a studio, especially when they know it'll be a weird movie that has zero selling points other than it being Coppola. That'll get like 30 million back, tops.
