It's like the next movie to come out in 15 years. The sets amazing. The costumes amazing. The soundtrack was fricking kino on its own. The acting was amazing. Somehow managed to make Ruffalo likable and funny. It was hilarious. The lenses they used were wild. It was a great movie.

It's good but it's Emma Stone going full moron "I'M ACTING!!!!!" and getting praise for it.

It's humorous. I can see those themes on display but it doesn't distract from all the good things the movie have going for it. You should watch it and form your own opinion.

        Anonymous

The movie really slaps you with those themes upfront. It’s really divisive here because it’s full of pretentious artsy nothingness that midwits love, but also full of heavy handed feminist themes that morons hate, so it’s hard to find honest criticism for the movie. It sucks in spite of the cool shots, set and costume design, etc, but the plot is garbage, the themes are incredibly forward, and presented with such shitty acting, symbolism, etc, that the movie was almost grueling to finish. After a certain point, it’s just Emma Stone (with the brain/personality of a child) getting fricked by multiple men. Pretty much every other actress nominated deserved it more.

Wed Anderson is one of my favorite directors, and I really enjoyed a lot of Yorgos’s other films. I love movies with creative and/or subtle visuals.
This movie just felt like pure style over substance. The symbolism in scenes like the dancing scene where Duncan is figuratively and literally losing his control over Bella, and the feminist themes throughout felt very obvious and in your face. That itself isn’t really a problem, an audience understanding the movie is important, but the movie is stuffed with really lame creative decisions that come off as “artsy for the sake of it”. The plot was also horseshit. I’m not sorry for not enjoying moron Emma getting fricked for 20 minutes.

A father did that for his sons. Bella thought it was weird and creepy. The father was meant to be viewed as weird and creepy. It wasn't glorifying it.

Unlike in HBOs Rome where (a barely pubescent) Octavius mother sends him to a brothel with an enlisted soldier to lose his virginity to some slave prostitute. That was meant to be viewed as normal.

An infants brain is transplanted into a grown woman, who is sexualized the entire movie and prostituted out by a french gypsy, makes friends with a black socialist lesbian. it all infers men seek ownership over women. Gay feminist take.

Anything that isn't a basic clean looking Disney movie is okay with me at this point. It's the kind of movie I don't feel like I need to watch again, but the biggest compliment I can give it is that it made me feel the way I did as a kid when I saw something I'd never seen before. The last time I had this kind of feeling was seeing a really good theatre piece. Mind you, I'm not saying it was some kind of masterpiece, it was just nice that the director seemed to want to make something unique and expressive and that just doesn't really exist anymore in mainstream cinema. I'm glad it got made and I'm glad I watched it, even if I didn't love it. That's more than can be said for most movies these days. I miss it. I want to go back

Yeah. I'm more into it than you were, but this is the reason why I'm so enthusiastic about it. The last four? five? maybe longer? years of mainstream movies have been woeful to me. I'm thrilled that something like this got greenlit, produced, and broadly released. It was engaging to watch for me in a way that I haven't felt in a while and I want more movies that engage me like this to be produced. I'm probably buying too much into a false hope that this could become more frequent but god damnit I want to believe

The thing that soured me on this film was that I enjoyed it most when it was mocking its own premise and pretensions. Any time Ruffalo's, Dafoe's, or Youssef's character would break away from their extremely particular (whether debonair, "empirical", or Victorian) manner of speech to say something like
    >What the frick are you talking about?
or the exchange that Baxter and McCandles have:
    >All my research had come to this moment, fate had brought me a dead body and a live infant, it was obvious.
    >It was?
    >Take the infant’s brain out and put it in the full grown woman, reanimate her and watch.
    >Jesus.
It made me think, but by the end of the film I didn't empathize with Bella's perspective. I understand the conceit of a physiologically adult female being thrust into "polite society", tabula rasa. But it feels like rather than producing some sort of liberated, enlightened woman, it just produced an emotionally distant prostitute - who abandons McCandles at the altar so she can learn about who she was even though she is, by this point, definitively Bella Baxter. The more I took the movie seriously, the more I disliked it.

The production design is great, though.

    >Emma stone bound and ball-gagged getting raped in a full nude shot
Gee, I wonder why she won the Oscar? You’d have to be blind not to recognize how degenerate Hollywood is and think the majority of Weinstein’s “assaults” weren’t consensual.

The movie is about the evolution of an ego. Go from id shit where you just want fricking and eating and what feels good into exploration of self and world and your place in it until you reach self-actualization and self-understanding.

      >Starts as a prostitute
      >Ends as a prostitute

Wow such an amazing character arc!

This movie is based because it calls out all the projecting pedos on both sides of the political spectrum. Unironically a really good feminist film
